The KTE-Nakashima Side Thrusters TCT-220 and TCT-200 are electric-hydraulic control devices with a hydraulic cylinder inside the thruster. This design offers excellent controllability, safety, and long life. The thrusters are used to provide controlled thrust to port or starboard by varying the pitch of the propeller blades, which are controlled remotely from the bridge. They are designed for use on pure car & truck carriers (PCTC) like the A.P. Moller 45,000 m2 PCTC and are used to maneuver the vessel and assist in docking.

Frequently Answers and Questions

How is the propeller pitch controlled?
The propeller pitch is controlled by a remote control system from the bridge. The system uses an electric-hydraulic control mechanism, where an electric motor drives a hydraulic pump to move oil to a cylinder inside the thruster. This movement of the oil changes the position of the crosshead, which in turn controls the pitch of the propeller blades.
What is the purpose of the header tank?
The header tank supplies the thruster with lubricating oil, which is gravity fed to the unit. It also helps to maintain a slightly higher pressure than the external water pressure, preventing ingress of seawater in the event of a leak.
What are the key components of the KTE-Nakashima Side Thruster?
The key components include the propeller hub sub-assembly, propeller shaft sub-assembly, pinion drive shaft sub-assembly, OD box and feedback device, gear housing assembly, hydraulic pump unit, and header tank.
What type of oil is used in the side thruster?
The thruster uses ISO VG 68 gear oil for both lubrication and hydraulic operation.
