XDMC Digital Message Card
The Model XDMC Digital Message Card allows the FireFinder XLS voice system to support up to 300 automatic or manually activated audio messages. The XDMC can play two messages simultaneously, and up to two XDMCs can be used in a single system simultaneously. The card can store up to 100 minutes of phrases in its onboard memory, and the system can assemble these phrases into the 300 messages.
Users can configure the FireFinder XLS system to associate a message to a particular event. Events and their associated messages can be sent to one or more speaker zones on the system, with the ability to prioritize the events. This means that a particular event can cause an evacuation message to play in one area, and an alert message in a second area. If an event then occurs in this second area, the alert message can be changed to an evacuation message by the proper use of the priorities. Message can also be sent to speaker zones manually by activating switches on the SCM-8 module on FireFinder XLS.
The XDMC gets mounted in a single slot of a CC-2 or CC-5 card cage. It communicates with the DAC-NET using the
CAN communication bus. Like other cards that communicate via CAN, it must be mounted within the same enclosure as its associated DAC-NET. Diagnostic LEDs on the XDMC indicate power, communication, fault, and activation status.
Phrases and messages are configured using a new software tool called Composer. The Composer tool is included in the Zeus custom system configuration tool. Composer lets users import .MP3 or .WAV files to create a custom phrase library. Then, phrases from a default phrase library (also included with Composer) and a custom phrase library can be used to build messages. Composer also allows user to also configure properties of the messages, like adding pre-announce tones, minimum number of rounds, continuous play, or message duration.
The use of the XDMC on FireFinder XLS requires the system to use several new revisions of system firmware and software. Systems must use PMI Rev. 9.02.0019 or higher, DAC-NET- Main Rev. 4.27 or higher, and Zeus Rev.
9.02.0015 or higher. The XDMC is supported on systems using either the PMI-2 or the PMI.
Communication with Cerberus detection and input devices
FireFinder XLS 9.0 now supports communication with and all of the features and application setting of the new
Cerberus detection devices that were first introduced as part of the Cerberus Fire Safety fire alarm panel rollouts and will soon be released.
FireFinder XLS 9.0 also supports the new SBGA-34 audible base.
Since the new detection devices require less current for operation, using these devices on an XLS instead of an
HFP-11 or HFPT-11 may result in lower power requirements and smaller battery size for a system.
Additionally, all input modules supported on FireFinder XLS 9.0 (HTRI-S, HTRI-D, HTRI-R, HTRI-M and FDCIO422) can have their inputs configured as carbon monoxide events. This allows you to monitor 3 rd party CO detectors if required.

The FDCIO422 four-input, four-output module is also supported with FireFinder XLS 9.0. The input can be configured for four Class B inputs, or two Class A inputs. Each input is separately configurable as alarm, security, supervisory, waterflow, Carbon Monoxide, trouble, or other event types.
All detector features are configured in Zeus Rev. 9.02.0015, and require DLC Rev. 06.00.0008. Support for the
Cerberus detection devices is currently limited to systems using the PMI-2 at rev 9.02.0019.
Support for the SBGA-34 Audible Base
The SBGA-34 Audible Base is supported by XLS 9.0. These bases can now be used with the new Cerberus detection devices. The base includes jumper settings to select steady, Temporal 3 or Temporal 4 (carbon monoxide signal) sound patterns when activated. If the base is configured for steady and gets its power from a Notification
Appliance Circuit, the NAC can be coded, and this coded signal can be sounded at the base upon activation. This offers the ability to synchronize audible signal patterns between multiple bases and/or bases and standard horns.
Additionally, since XLS supports multiple audible patterns by event and priority, these bases can now play different patterns based on different event logic. The SBGA-34 audible base is compatible with the Cerberus and the H-
Series detectors.
Support for Temporal 4 Coded Audible for Carbon Monoxide events
NFPA 720 is the standard for carbon monoxide life safety systems. This standard specifically requires a different audible pattern called Temporal 4 to indicate carbon monoxide life safety events. Since FireFinder XLS now supports carbon monoxide life safety events through the dual optical thermal multi-criteria detector with CO sensor, it also now supports the Temporal 4 audible code on ZIC-4A and ZIC-8B cards. The use of Temporal 4 on
NACs for FireFinder XLS requires Zeus Rev. 9.02.0015, PMI Rev 9.02.0019, ZIC-4A Rev.08.00.0000, and ZIC-8 Rev.
04.00.0000. Since HTRI input modules can now be configured as carbon monoxide events, the Temporal 4 feature is supported on systems using either PMI or PMI-2 operating units.

PMI2 Design & Engineering Considerations
The PMI-2 can be used in a project just like a PMI. Make sure that a PMI-2 is selected in the Zeus configuration. As a result, all features and limitations currently applicable to a PMI are also applicable to a PMI-2. However, due to PMI-
2’s increased processing capability, some new enhancements have been added.
Global PMIs in a networked FireFinder XLS system: Maximum of 10 GPMI-2 units are allowed in a Global
Voice configuration when using an NRC ring architecture. A maximum of 5 GPMI-2 units are allowed in a NIC-C architecture. No change from PMI.
Colors: The PMI-2 supports different colors for different event lists, with red for alarm events, yellow for trouble events, blue for supervisory events, and magenta for security events.
Local PMIs in a networked FireFinder XLS system: Maximum of 64 PMI-2 units are allowed in either a NIC-C or
NRC architecture. Note that the PMI only supported 59 units.
Logic Functions: PMI-2 supports a maximum of 2500 logic functions in a single node. A AND, OR, D LATCH,
START TIMER etc are examples of logic functions. This is a marked improvement from PMI which supported only
1500 functions. Improved PMI-2 microprocessor speed combined with increased memory therefore makes it possible to combine fire, voice and smoke control functionality in a single node.
External References: Similar to logic functions, the maximum number of external references has also been increased to 1000 for the PMI-2. The PMI only supported 500 external references. A logic function that references a point physically located in a different node counts as an external reference.
The result is that the PMI-2 supports fire events, voice evacuation, and smoke control in a single node, as long as the logic function and external reference limits are observed.
The supervisory current draw of the PMI-2 is 190 mA, lower than the 230 mA required for the PMI.
Connecting cables for the PMI-2 are exactly the same as those used to connect the PMI to the rest of the system.
The PMI-2 supports integral Mounting slots for SCM-8 or LCM-8 modules. The PMI-2 come with two removable cover plates below the main operator interface where the switch or LED module can be installed.
System configurations and module firmware upgrades are transferred from a laptop computer to the PMI-2 by a USB connection. This not only provides a faster transfer mechanism, it relieves the requirement to use a serial connection or converter. Since many modern laptop computers do not have a serial port, this feature is a welcome change.
PMI-2 panel firmware is transferred from the laptop computer to the PMI-2 by an Ethernet connection. These large system files are transferred much faster than the current serial connection, and with greater reliability.
Global PMI database information is stored on an SD memory card instead of a PCMCIA card. Many modern laptops do not have a port to write directly to a PCMCIA card, but may write to an SD card from a built-in port.
Also, SD cards can be inserted and removed from the card slot on the PMI-2 without removing power from the unit. Lastly, the SD memory card slot is accessible from the back of the PMI-2 without removing the back cover of the unit.

The PMI-2 has a second SD memory card slot that can be used for storage of system information. It is a convenient place to store an SD card with backup system configuration files, module firmware, as-built drawings (in electronic format), system reports, or maintenance information. Please note that the PMI-2 does not directly have read/write access to this port supported at this time.
Migration path
PMI-2 hardware is backwards compatible with previous versions of XLS modules and cards. Therefore, a PMI can easily be upgraded to a PMI-2. In some cases, the firmware for XLS modules and cards may need to be upgraded to be compatible with PMI-2. Going forward, all NEW features will be implemented only on PMI-2. Note that when changing the PMI to a PMI-2 on any one node in a XNET system, all other nodes should be upgraded at the same time to synchronize the PMI-2 firmware and Zeus software versions.
PMI2 Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
Q1 Is the PMI-2 and GPMI-2 backwards compatible with previous version of XLS?
A1 YES! Although it may require module firmware upgrading, the new PMI-2 is backward compatible.
