SAFETY NOTE:
Overtoasting of thinly sliced breads, reduced fat diet breads, and packaged greasy toaster foods could cause them to catch on fire. Toast thin, diet light, or greasy slices only in lower settings of the Toast Color Control; for packaged toaster foods, follow toasting instructions provided by their manufacturers.
POLARIZED PLUG
This horizontal toaster has a polarized plug — one blade is wider than the other. To reduce the risk of electric shock, this plug will fit into a polarized outlet only one way. If the plug does not fit fully into the outlet, reverse it. If it still does not fit, contact a qualified electrician. Do not attempt to defeat this safety feature by modifying the plug in any way.
How to Use
CHOOSING A
MOUNTING
LOCATION
Your Spacemaker* Optima TM Horizontal Toaster is designed to be mounted under a cabinet. DO NOT
ATTEMPT TO OPERATE UNLESS THE UNIT IS
PROPERLY INSTALLED. It can be mounted to wood or metal cabinets. When choosing a mounting location:
■ Keep in mind that it fits your normal work pattern - especially the use of counter top appliances and the possible addition of other under-the cabinet appliances.
■ Hold the Toaster in various locations while you consider the most convenient location for mounting in your kitchen.
■ Do not install the Toaster over another cooking or heating appliance or behind, under, or in front of under-cabinet lighting appliances.
*Trademark of General Electric Company, U.S.A.
4
Figure A
■ Do not install the Toaster directly in front of an electrical outlet, but be sure it is mounted within reach of an electrical outlet.
■
The Toaster is designed to be mounted directly next to any other Spacemaker* Optima
TM product,
with a clearance of at least 1” between the two products. If it is not mounted next to any other
Spacemaker* Optima
TM product, maintain at least a 5” clearance on all sides including the back.
NOTE:
If you have Flush Bottom cabinets—a flat level surface where the cabinet doors come to the bottom of the cabinet front—(See Illustration 1A page 6) please take note that the Metal Lip of the
Toaster should not be placed anywhere under the hinge area of two cabinet doors.
If you are mounting the Horizontal Toaster directly next to another Spacemaker* Optima that is already mounted:
TM product
1. Place the Mounting Template along the side of the already-mounted Spacemaker* Optima
TM product that your Horizontal Toaster will hang next to.
2. Using the Mounting Template edge as a guide, draw a line on the underside of the cabinet.
(Figure A) This will be the line to use to mark the edge of the Horizontal Toaster’s location.
NOTE:
To help determine mounting location, see page 24 for the lengths of all the
Spacemaker* Optima TM products.

Tools you will need for installation:
• Drill and 1/4” drill bit
• Phillips screwdriver
• Hammer/Nail to start a drill hole
• Adhesive tape
• Eye Protection Goggles
• Newspaper to cover counter tops (optional)
6
First, determine if your cabinet has a flush bottom or overhang bottom.
(See Illustration 1A & 1B). If your cabinet has a flush bottom — flat, level surface — follow the mounting instructions below. If your cabinet has an overhang — a lip extending below the bottom of the cabinet shelf — turn to page 9 for mounting instructions.
MOUNTING INSTRUCTIONS
FOR CABINET WITH FLUSH
BOTTOM
1. Empty your cabinet of its contents before starting to drill.
Clean the underside of the cabinet to remove any grease or other residue.
2. With the doors of the cabinet open, place the front of the
Mounting Template even with the front of the cabinet. (Figure B)
Tape securely in place.
3. Mark the four drill holes through the Template onto the cabinet bottom with a pencil and

7 remove the Mounting Template.
(Figure C)
4. Cover the counter top to catch drilled wood chips.
CAUTION:
Suitable eye protection is recommended to prevent injury from shavings while using a drill.
5. Make a small starter hole by hammering a nail or using a smaller drill bit. Holding the drill straight and vertical at the hole marks, center and drill up through the bottom of the cabinet. (Figure D)
6. Insert a plastic washer on each screw with the flat side of the washer resting on the cabinet bottom. Drop each screw with the washer in place through a drilled hole from inside the cabinet. Repeat the procedure with remaining screws and washers. Thread a nut onto each screw so that approximately 1/4” of the screw is exposed beyond the nut. (Figure E)
7. Slide the Mounting Bracket above the nuts through the
U-shaped openings on the
Bracket. The Bracket will then be resting on the nuts. (Figure F)
(See page 8).

MOUNTING INSTRUCTIONS FOR
CABINET WITH OVERHANG
If your cabinet has an overhang — a lip extending below the bottom of the cabinet shelf — follow these simple mounting instructions.
1. Empty your cabinet of its contents before starting to drill. Clean the
underside of the cabinet to remove any grease or other residue.
2. To determine whether you need to use Spacer Bars to mount your
Horizontal Toaster, use the
Cabinet Overhang Ruler on your
Mounting Template and measure the cabinet overhang (See
Illustration 2). If the overhang measures 1/4”, 3/4”,1-1/4”, or 1-
3/4” inches, you will need Spacer
Bars. Instructions for using
Spacer Bars are on page 12.
NOTE:
If The Mounting Location
Has A Partition: The Mounting
Template must be cut and a piece removed to allow for this partition.
(Figure I) Measure and cut very carefully. Save any pieces of the
Mounting Template you remove.
3. Fold down the grey strip on the
Mounting Template at the dotted line.
4. With the doors of the cabinet open, position the Mounting
Template under the cabinet so
Figure J
10 the folded grey strip is against the back of the cabinet overhang.
Tape the Mounting Template securely in place. Check to be sure the Mounting Template is located where you plan to mount the toaster.
NOTE:
If the cabinet has an overhang that extends more than
2 inches below the cabinet bottom, a wooden shim (a piece of wood that fits between the
Cabinet and the Bracket) will be necessary. Cut a block of wood that is: 16 1/4” x 5 1/2”. Make sure the wood is at least as thick as the amount of the overhang that exceeds 2 inches. Locate and drill holes on the shim for the screws to pass through. (Longer screws may be needed. See
Note after Step # 7.)
5. Mark the four drill holes through the Template onto the cabinet bottom with a pencil and remove the Mounting Template.
(Figure J)
Cover the counter top to catch drilled wood chips.
CAUTION:
Suitable eye protection is recommended to prevent injury from shavings while using a drill.
Figure K
Figure L
6. Make a small starter hole by hammering a nail or using a smaller drill bit. Holding the drill straight and vertical at the hole marks, center and drill up through the bottom of the cabinet. (Figure K)
7. Insert a plastic washer on each screw with the flat side of the washer resting on the cabinet bottom. Drop each screw with the washer in place through a drilled hole from inside the cabinet. Repeat the procedure with remaining screws and washers. Thread a nut onto each screw so that approximately 1/4 of the screw is exposed beyond the nut. (Figure L)
NOTE:
If it was necessary to use a wood shim
(See NOTE after Step #4), you may need to use screws longer than those provided. To determine this, hold the shim firmly against the underside of the cabinet. Drop one of the screws provided through the cabinet shelf and the shim.
Check to see that at least 1/2 inch of the screw is visible to provide secure mounting. If it is not, you will need #10-24 flat head machine screws. The length of the screws should equal at least the thickness of the cabinet floor PLUS the thickness of the shim PLUS 1/2 inch. These screws can be obtained at a hardware store.

8. If you determined you need
Spacer Bars (See Step # 2, page
9), place the Spacer Bars on top of each Bracket so that the 2 small tabs on the bars fit into the notches on the Brackets. Slide the
Mounting Bracket and Spacer
Bars above the nuts through the
U-shaped openings on the
Bracket. The Bracket will then be resting on the nuts. (Figure M)
9. Push the Spacer Bars/Bracket up against the screws and forward toward the front of the cabinet. Tighten the screw/nut assembly with a screwdriver until the Spacer Bars/Bracket just touches the bottom of the cabinet.
(Figure N) The Bracket should move freely front to rear in the slot to fine tune the fit of the Toaster to the cabinet front. Repeat Steps 8 and 9 for the other Bracket.
10. Hold the Toaster in front of you and push it forward into the slots on the Mounting Brackets until it locks into place. The Metal Lip on the top of the Toaster should rest against the cabinet front. (Figure

USING THE
TOASTER
11. Drape the Cord toward an electrical outlet and use the Cord
Hook to hold the Cord out of the way. Peel the paper off the adhesive back of the Cord Hook.
For the most attractive appearance, place the Cord Hook at the back edge of the cabinet
(on or next to the wall) over the outlet to be used.
NOTE:
For safety, NEVER USE
TACKS THROUGH OR AGAINST
THE CORD TO HOLD IT.
NOTE:
The Horizontal Toaster must be mounted before using.
A NOTE ABOUT THE TOASTER: This toaster is designed with a special setting for pastry and a range of settings — light to dark — for toast.
1. Plug the cord into a standard electrical outlet. This Toaster is equipped with electronic toasting, which means consistent toasting performance for each setting. Adjust the
Electronic Toast Control Knob to the desired setting - Light to Dark or Pastry.
2. For first use, set the Toast Control at Medium.
Readjust for lighter or darker toasting. All breads/pastries do not toast alike. For example, thinner, dry bread requires a lighter setting than thicker, fresh bread. See the “Toasting
Guide” on page 14 for recommended settings.

Questions on Using the Horizontal Toaster
1. Can I toast thick slices of homemade breads?
Yes, as long as the slices don’t go over the
MAX FILL LINE. You can see the words
MAX FILL LINE and the line when you pull open the door. It is not recommended to put foods in the toaster that exceed the
MAX line.

2. I noticed some moisture on the glass door—is that normal?
Yes. Some condensation may form on the door during the toasting cycle because the door traps the heat and moisture. This is normal.
3. Can I interrupt a toasting cycle once it’s started?
Yes. Push the “Stop” button and the cycle will stop. If you use a second toasting cycle, watch for doneness and use “Stop” to stop the cycle and avoid burning. You should use a lower setting for a second toast cycle.
4. What do I do if my toast burns and starts flaming?
The door of this toaster has an added benefit should flaming occur.
Since it traps the flames, the door helps extinguish any fire within a short time. DO NOT open the door until the flames go out. Allow the toaster to cool before removing burnt food.
5. Can I put butter or margarine on my food before toasting?
Yes. You can use a very thin layer of butter or margarine before toasting. Be sure to use a setting of Medium or Light. Some dripping may occur. Avoid using sugary toppings such as jellies, preserves, or syrups in the toaster since they get very hot and may burn.
6. Pop-up toasters usually indicate one slot or the other for toasting one slice. What is the best position for toasting one slice in this
toaster? For the most even heating and toasting, place the food in the center of the toasting rack. Use lower settings for a single slice of toast.
(See the “Toasting Guide” on page 14.)
7. Can I reheat foods (i.e. Danish, a slice of pizza) on aluminum foil
in the toaster? No. This toaster should only be used with traditional toaster-style foods. No foods should be heated in foil or on trays.
8. What is the best way to clean crumbs out of the door area?
Remove the rack and sweep crumbs out with a pastry brush. If you don’t have a pastry brush, use a dry paper towel and wipe clean.
15
Figure P
16
3. Pull the handle down until
the door is fully opened and latched. The Slide-Out Rack will come forward. Place the slices of bread or toaster foods on the Rack. Use the
Door Handle to gently close the door. (Figure P)
NOTE: For best toasting results, use the MAX FILL
LINE located on the metal border inside the Glass Door as a guide to food height. It is not recommended to toast foods that rise above the
MAX line because toasting quality will be affected.
4. Press the Start Button and the Power On Light will glow. Once the Toasting cycle has been completed, a signal bell will ring. Pull the door handle down until the door is opened and latched.
The Power On Light will go off and the Rack will move forward to present your food.
5. For your safety, use a potholder or utensil to remove toasted food.
6. To stop the toasting cycle at any time during it’s operation, press the “Stop”
Button and the Power On
Light will turn off.

TIPS ABOUT THE
ELECTRICAL CORD
The cord length of this Horizontal Toaster was selected to reduce safety hazards that may occur with a longer cord. If more cord length is needed, an extension cord may be used. It should be rated not less than 10 amperes, 120 volts, and should have Underwriters Laboratories listing. A properly rated extension cord with a polarized plug may be purchased from a Black & Decker
(U.S.) Inc., Household Appliance Company-
Owned or Authorized Service Center. When using a longer cord, be sure that it does not drape over a working area or dangle where it could be pulled on or tripped over.
SERVICE OR
REPAIR?
Service, if necessary, must be performed by a
