The main difference between the two versions is the memory configuration. The pre-Issue 6 version uses a combination of ROM and EPROM, while the post-Issue 6 version has 48k of on-board ROM realized in two memory devices.

The ZX8301 is responsible for TV picture generation, master clock generation, system address decode, DRAM refresh, and control of the bus transceiver. The ZX8302 controls the signals to and from peripheral devices, including the keyboard, speaker, joystick, RS232, Net, Microdrive, and Real-Time clock.

Microdrives are selected using the MDSELDH and MDSELCKN signals from IC23. Each microdrive control chip contains a shift register, and the selected microdrive has a '1' on its COMMS OUT pin.
