SECURING AND NAMING YOUR HAWAIIAN TELCOM
HIGH SPEED INTERNET WIRELESS CONNECTION
Hawaiian Telcom recommends that you secure your wireless connection to prevent unauthorized wireless
access to your High Speed Internet Service which can significantly slow down your connection to the
Internet and subject your computer and/or network to intrusion.
STEP 1: CONNECT TO THE WESTELL 327 WIRELESS MODEM
While configuring the Westell 327W, it is recommended to use a computer that is connected directly to the modem
using an Ethernet cable (it is possible to configure the modem over a wireless connection, but connectivity to the
modem will be temporarily interrupted when the modem settings are changed).
Open your internet browser (i.e. Internet Explorer, Safari, etc.) and type http://192.168.1.1 into the address bar and
press Enter (See Figure 1 below). This will forward you to the Modem Status screen (See Figure 2 below).

STEP 2: LOG IN AND NAME YOUR WIRELESS NETWORK
The Westell 327 Wireless Modem is shipped to you Unsecured and with the Network Name pre-configured. The
default Wireless Connection Name for your modem when searching the “Available Wireless Networks” on your
personal computer is the Serial Number on the bottom of the modem. This step will assist you in setting the
Wireless Network to the name of you choice.
Changing the Wireless Network Name
In the top Menu Bar of the Modem Status Page, click on: Configuration > Wireless > Basic (See Figure 3 below)
Figure 3
You will be prompted to log into the modem using the pre-set default login and password:
Login: admin
Password: password
You will be forwarded to the Wireless Configuration Screen where you can enter your desired Network Name. (See
Figure 4 below). Enter the desired Network Name and click the “save” button.

A notification window will open warning that “Wireless Access will be interrupted” (See Figure 6 below). Click
“OK”. The network name is now changed. You must now connect to the new network name to get online.

STEP 3: SECURING YOUR WESTELL 327 WIRELESS MODEM
There are two types of wireless security available on your modem. WPA-PSK and WEP. WPA is a newer option
than its predecessor WEP, but may not be compatible with older network cards.
In the top Menu Bar, click on: Configuration > Wireless > Security (See Figure 7 below)
Figure 7
You may be prompted to log into the modem as you did in Step 2 above. If so, log in again which will forward you
to the Wireless Security screen. By default, wireless security is disabled on your modem. To enable, select the
desired security type — WPA-PSK or WEP (See Figure 8 below).
Figure 3
To configure WPA-PSK: Set the drop-down selection and type the desired password in the WPA Shared Key
field (See Figure 9 below). The password must range from 8 to 63 text characters.
Figure 4
To configure WEP: Set the drop-down selection type the desired password in the Key 1 field (See Figure 10
below). The password must be 5, 13, or 29 text characters exactly.

After selecting and setting the Wireless Security Settings, Click the “save” button to set the password. A
notification window will open warning that “Wireless Access will be interrupted”. Click “OK”. When connecting to
your now “secure” wireless network, you will now be prompted to enter the password key. Any additional Wireless
Computers or handheld devices will need to know the password in order to use your connection. Unauthorized
access is now blocked. Congratulations. You have now secured your Hawaiian Telcom High Speed Internet
Wireless Connection!
