1.
Read this owner's guide carefully in its entirety before attempt-
ing to assemble or operate this machine. Be completely famil-
iar with the controls and the proper use of this machine before
operating it. Keep this manual in a safe place for future and
regular reference and for ordering replacement parts.
. Your rotary mower is a precision piece of power equipment,
not a plaything. Therefore, exercise extreme caution at all
times. Your unit has been designed to perform one job: to
mow grass. Do not use it for any other purpose.
Never allow children under 14 years old to operate a power
mower. Children 14 years old and over should only operate
mower under close parental supervision. Only persons well
acquainted with these rules of safe operation should be
allowed to use your mower.
. Keep the area of operation clear of all persons, particularly
small children and pets. Stop engine when they are in the
vicinity of your mower to help prevent blade contact or thrown
object injury. Although the area of operation should be com-
pletely cleared of foreign objects, an object may have been
overlooked and could be accidentally thrown by the mower in
any direction and cause serious personal injury to the operator
or any others allowed in the area.
PREPARATION
1.
. Always wear safety glasses
Thoroughly inspect the area where the equipment is to be
used. Remove all stones, sticks, wire, bones and other foreign
objects which could be picked up and thrown by the mower in
any direction and cause serious personal injury to the operator
or any others allowed in the area. Plan your mowing pattern to
avoid discharge of material toward roads, sidewalks,
bystanders and the like.
or eye shields during operation or
while performing an adjustment or repair, to protect eyes from
foreign objects that may be thrown from the machine in any
irection.
_ Wear sturdy, rough-soled work shoes and close-fitting slacks
and shirts. Shirts and pants that cover the arms and legs and
steel-toed shoes are recommended. Do not wear loose fitting
clothes or jewelry. They can be caught in moving parts. Never
operate a unit in bare feet, sandals, or sneakers.
_ Before working with gasoline, extinguish all cigarettes, cigars,
pipes and other sources of ignition. Check the fue! level before
starting the engine. Gasoline is an extremely flammable fuel.
Do not fill the gasoline tank indoors, while the engine is run-
ning, or until engine has been allowed to cool for at least two
minutes after running. Replace gasoline cap securely and wipe
off any spilled gasoline before starting the engine as it may
cause a fire or explosion.
. Disengage the self-propelled mechanism or drive clutch on
units so equipped before starting the engine.
The blade control handle is a safety device. Never attempt to
bypass its operation. Doing so makes the safety device inoper-
ative and may result in personal injury through contact with the
rotating blade. The blade control handle must operate easily in
both directions and automatically return to the disengaged
position when released.
_ Never attempt to make a wheel or cutting height adjustment
while the engine is running.
. Never operate the mower in wet grass. Always be sure of your
footing. A slip and fall can cause serious personal injury. Keep
a firm hold on the handle and walk, never run. Mow only in
daylight or in good artificial light.
2
9.
For your safety, use the siope gauge included as part of this
manual to measure slopes before operating this unit on a
sloped or hilly area. If the slope is greater than 15° as shown
on the slope gauge, do not operate this unit on that area or
serious injury could result.
OPERATION
1.
2.
Do not change the engine governor settings or overspeed the
engine. Excessive engine speeds are dangerous.
Do not put hands or feet near or under rotating parts. Keep
clear of the discharge opening at all times as the rotating blade
can cause injury.
. Stop the blade when crossing gravel drives, walks or roads.
- After striking a foreign object, stop the engine, remove the wire
from the spark plug, and thoroughly inspect the mower for any
damage. Repair the damage before restarting and operating the
mower.
. If the equipment should start to vibrate abnormally, stop the
engine and check immediately for the cause. Vibration is gen-
erally a warning of trouble.
. Shut the engine off and wait until the blade comes to a com-
plete stop before removing the grass catcher or unclogging the
chute. The cutting blade continues to rotate for a few seconds
after the engine is shut off. Never place any part of the body in
“the blade area until you are sure the blade has stopped rotat-

make certain the blade
and all moving parts have stopped. Disconnect the spark plug
wire, and keep the wire away from the spark plug to prevent
accidental starting.
. Do not run the engine indoors.
. Never cut grass by pulling
mower toward you. Mow across the
face of slopes, never up-and-down. Exercise extreme caution
when changing direction on slopes. Do not mow excessively
steep slopes. Always be sure of your footing. A slip and fall can
cause serious personal injury.
Never operate mower without proper guards, plates or other
safety protective devices in place.
Muffler and engine become hot and can cause a burn. Do not
touch.

GAS AND OIL FILL-UP
Service the engine with gasoline and oil as
instructed in the separate engine manual packed with
your mower. Read instructions carefully.
WARNING: Never fill fuel tank indoors,
with engine running or until the engine
has been allowed to cool for at least two
minutes after running.
BEFORE STARTING
1. Before each use, check for proper drive clutch
operation by performing the following before start-
ing the engine:
With the drive clutch control released, push
mower forward. It should move freely. Pull mower
backward. It should move with only a small
amount of resistance.
If it does not and the rear wheels tend to lock up,
the clutch may not be releasing completely. Do
not start the engine until corrections have been
made. Check the control cable for severe bend,
kinks and binding, or grass build-up around the
belt. Correct and adjust as required. Refer to
instructions under “Drive Clutch Control
Adjustment” in Adjustment Section for loosening
the drive belt.

TO START ENGINE AND ENGAGE BLADE
IMPORTANT: Move the shift lever only when the
engine is running. Shifting the speeds with the engine
off can cause damage to the unit. Disengage the drive
clutch control when shifting speeds.
WARNING: When starting the unit for the
first time, place mower in first speed
(slow) position. Face the mower against a
solid object such as a wall, fence, etc.
Start the unit, and if it shows any signs of
motion with the drive clutch control disen-
gaged, shut the engine off immediately.
Make certain the drive clutch control is
adjusted so the drive belt is as loose as
possible. Refer to the Adjustment Section.
1. Move the throttle control lever to all the way for-
ward.

trol handle and hold it against the upper handle.
Make certain drive clutch control handle is
released.
4. Grasp starter handle and pull rope out slowly until
engine reaches start of compression cycle (rope
will pull slightly harder at this point). Let the rope
rewind slowly.
5. Pull rope with a rapid, continuous, full arm stroke.
Keep a firm grip on start handle. Return it slowly
to the rope guide.
6. After engine starts, move throttle control to FAST
or desired engine speed.
NOTE: /f any problems are encountered, refer to the

1. Release the blade control handle to stop the
engine and blade.
WARNING: The blade continues to rotate
for a few seconds after the engine 15 shut
off.
2. Disconnect the spark plug wire and ground it
against the engine to prevent accidental starting
while equipment is unattended.
‘ USING YOUR ROTARY MOWER
Be sure that lawn is clear of stones, sticks, wire, or
other objects which could damage lawn mower or
engine. Such objects could be accidently thrown by
the mower in any direction and cause serious person-
al injury to the operator and others.
For the best results, do not cut wet grass because it
tends to stick to the underside of the mower, prevent-
ing proper discharge of grass clippings, and could
cause you to slip and fall. New grass, thick grass or
wet grass may require a narrower cut. Speed of the
mower should be adjusted to the condition of the lawn.
When using the side discharge mower, the best mow-
ing pattern is one that allows the clippings to dis-
charge towards the uncut part of the lawn. This per-
mits recutting of the clippings to further pulverize
them. When cutting high weeds, discharge towards
cut portion, then recut at right angles to first direction.
For a healthier lawn, always cut off one-third or
less of the total length of the grass. Lawn should
be cut in the fall as long as there is growth.
This mower is designed to be operated at full throttle
to give you the best cut and do the most effective job
of bagging the cut grass.
WARNING: If you strike a foreign object,
А stop the engine. Remove wire from spark
plug, thoroughly inspect the mower for
any damage, and repair the damage
before restarting and operating the
mower. Extensive vibration of the mower
during operation is an indication of dam-
age. The unit should be promptly
inspected and repaired.
USING THE MULCHER
For effective mulching, do not cut wet grass because
it tends to stick to the underside of the deck, prevent-
ing proper mulching of grass clippings. New or thick
grass may require a narrower cut. The ground speed
should be adjusted tc the condition of the lawn. If
mowing has been delayed and the grass has been
allowed to grow in excess of 4", muiching is not rec-
ommended. Mow using the grass bag to reduce the
grass height to 3-1/4" maximum before mulching.
Never cut more than one-third off the total length of
the grass at any one cutting.
ADJUSTMENTS
WARNING: Do not at any time make any
adjustment to lawn mower without first
stopping engine and disconnecting spark
plug wire.
CUTTING HEIGHT ADJUSTMENT
The height adjustment handles for the wheels are
located on the left side of the deck. The handles may
be placed in one of nine cutting height positions. See
figure 10.
For rough or uneven lawns, move the height adjust-
ment handles to positions which will give a higher cut-
ting height. Both front and rear handles must be
placed in the same relative position.

attached).
2. Remove the upper handle by removing the hand
knobs and carriage bolts. Lay the upper handle
out of the way, being careful not to bend or kink
the cables.
3. Remove the hairpin clips from the weld pins on
the handle brackets. Press outward on the legs of
the lower handle, and remove it from the mower.
4. Turn the lower handle around so the flat on the
bottom is facing upward as shown in figure 11.
Reassemble, placing the bottom holes in the han-
die over the weld pins in the handle mounting
bracket.
5. Reassemble the upper handle.
6. Place the hairpin clips in the inner holes in the
weld pins and attach the starter rope as instruct-
ed in the Assembly Instructions.

DRIVE CLUTCH CONTROL ADJUSTMENT
Use the adjustment wheel located on the underside of
the clutch control housing to tighten the drive belt if
mower does not self-propel with the drive clutch control
engaged, or if drive belt is slipping (unit hesitates while
engine maintains the same speed). See figure 12.
In addition, the adjustment wheel may also be used to
determine the position in which the drive clutch con-
trol is engaged. If it is more comfortable to have the
drive engaged with the lever further away from the
handle, tighten the drive belt.
Make certain to retest the unit for neutral as instructed
in the Operation Section. Move the adjustment wheel
in the opposite direction to loosen the drive belt if nec-
essary.

CARBURETOR ADJUSTMENTS
WARNING: If any adjustments are made
to the engine while the engine is running
(e.g. carburetor), keep clear of all moving
parts. Be careful of heated surfaces and
muffler.
Minor carburetor adjustment may be required to com-
pensate for differences in fuel, temperature, altitude
and load. Refer to the separate engine manual
packed with your mower for carburetor adjustment
information.
NOTE: A dirty air cleaner will cause an engine to run
rough. Be certain air cleaner is clean and attached to
the carburetor before adjusting carburetor.
LUBRICATION
WARNING: Always stop engine and dis-
A connect spark plug wire before cleaning,
lubricating or doing any kind of work on
lawn mower.
Blade Control—Lubricate the pivot points on the
blade control handle and the brake cable at least
once a season with light oil. See figure 15. The blade
control must operate freely in both directions.

and sealed at the factory. It does not require check-
ing. If disassembled for any reason, fill with 2 ounces
of Alvania grease, part number 737-0168.
MAINTENANCE
WARNING: Be sure to disconnect and
ground the spark plug wire before per-
forming any repairs or maintenance.
NOTE: When tipping the unit, empty the fuel tank and
keep engine spark plug side up.
TROUBLE SHOOTING
Refer to page 12 of this manual for trouble shooting
information.
CUTTING BLADE
When removing the cutting blade for sharpening or
replacement, protect hands by using heavy gloves or
a rag to grasp the cutting blade. Remove the bolt and
bell washer which hold the blade and adapter to the
engine crankshaft. Remove the blade and adapter
from the crankshaft. |
If the blade or blade adapter needs replacing, remove
the two small bolts, lock washers and nuts which hold
the blade to the adapter.
WARNING: Periodically inspect the blade
adapter for cracks, especially if you
A strike a foreign object. Replace when
necessary.
When sharpening the blade, follow the original angle
of grind as a guide. It is extremely important that each
cutting edge receives an equal amount of grinding to
prevent an unbalanced blade. An unbalanced blade
will cause excessive vibration when rotating at high
speeds, may cause damage to the mower and could
break, causing personal injury.
It is recommended that the blade always be removed
from the adapter for the best test of balance. The
blade can be tested by balancing it on a round shaft
screwdriver. Remove metal from the heavy side until
it balances evenly.
Before reassembling the blade and the blade adapter
to the unit, lubricate the engine crankshaft and the
inner surface of the blade adapter with light oil.
Lubricating the bolt holes, bolts and inner surface of
the nuts with light oil is also recommended. A 4 oz.
plastic bottle of light oil lubricant is available. Order
part number 737-0170. Engine oil may also be used.
When replacing the blade, be sure to install the blade
with the side of the blade marked “Bottom” (or with
part number) facing the ground when the mower is in
the operating position.
Blade Mounting Torque
Center Bolt: 450 in. Ib. min., 600 in. Ib. max.
Blade Adapter Bolt: 200 in. Ib. min., 300 in. Ib. max.
To insure safe operation of your unit, all nuts and
bolts must be checked periodically for correct tight-
ness. | | |
DECK
The underside of the mower deck should be cleaned
after each use to prevent a buildup of grass clippings,
leaves, dirt or other matter. If this debris is allowed to
accumulate, it will invite rust and corrosion, and may
cause an uneven discharge of grass clippings at the
next cutting.
The deck may be cleaned by tilting the mower and
scraping clean with a suitable tool (make certain the
spark plug wire is disconnected).

ENGINE
Refer to the separate engine manual for engine
maintenance instructions.
Maintain engine oil as instructed in the separate
engine manual packed with your unit. Read and follow
instructions carefully.
Service air cleaner every 25 hours under normal con-
ditions. Clean every few hours under extremely dusty
conditions. Poor engine performance and flooding
usually indicates that the air cleaner should be ser-
viced. To service the air cleaner, refer to the separate
engine manual packed with your unit.
The spark plug should be cleaned and the gap reset
once a season. Spark plug replacement is recom-
mended at the start of each mowing season; check
engine manual for correct plug type and gap specifi-
cations.
Clean the engine regularly with a cloth or brush.
Keep the cooling system (blower housing area) clean
to permit proper air circulation which is essential to
engine performance and life. Be certain to remove all
grass, dirt and combustible debris from muffler area.
BELT REMOVAL AND REPLACEMENT

remove the idler pulley from the idler bracket, and
clean and re-grease the needle bearing inside the pul-
ley using an all-purpose grease. When reassembling,
cupped side of washer must be against the idler
bracket.
10. Reassemble new belt, following instructions in
reverse order. Belt must be inside the belt keeper
which is part of the pulley half (ref. 171 on page
14),
NOTE: When reassembling the transmission belt
cover, be certain the belt guard on the transmission
cover is approximately 1/8" away from the belt (see
ref. 45 on page 13). Make certain to tighten all nuts
and bolts securely. If plastic was placed under the gas
cap, be certain to remove it.
