Warning These precautions should be read to avoid any possible exposure to microwave radiation or electrical shock. | The Caloric Microwave Oven is de- signed to give you long, safe and peak performance. However, as with all electrical appliances, there are some things that you must follow to avoid potential personal hazards and give you the performance you expect, 1. Visual check after uncrating. After the unit is uncrated all pack- Ing material must be removed from the oven cavity. Inspect the oven for any damage, such as misaligned door, damaged gasketing around the door, dents or holes in the screen in the door, dents inside the oven cavity or broken glass tray. Any dents or breakage snould be reported to your Caloric Dealer immediately and the delivering carrier. Your Caloric Dealer will tell you if the unit will operate correctly, 2. Electrical Grounding Instructions The entire appliance must be pro- perly grounded by a qualified installer to avoid shock hazard. It IS the personal responsibility and obligation of the customer to con- tact a qualified electrician/installer and have the unit connected to a properly grounded circuit in accordance with the National Elec- trical Code. 3. Check the operation of the electric lock, start and stop switches. The Microwave oven contains a solenoid operated electric lock that engages when the unit is opera- ting, and disengages when the unit Is turned off. In addition, hidden back-up interlocks are activated by motion of the door as it is opened. Here is how you may check the operation of the electric lock and interlocks: First, place a pyrex cup of water on the glass tray in the microwave oven, shut the door and turn the upper “TIMER” knob to 3 minutes. Press in the “START” button. The cooking light and fan should come on and the door will be locked. Second, press the RED stop button. The oven will shut off immediately. The cooking light on the control panel will go off and the sound of the cooking fan will cease. The electric lock is now disengaged and the door should open freely. If the unit shuts off by other means (such as the timer running out), or if slight door motion opens a back-up interlock switch, the electric lock is also disengaged. | If under any of the preceding con- ditions the oven does not operate property, do not use the unit. Call your Caloric Dealer or Caloric Authorized Service Agency. 4. Do not remove the outer case, door or control panel at anytime, as you will be exposed to dangerous high voltages. PRECAUTIONS TO AVOID POSSIBLE EXPOSURE TO EXCESSIVE MICROWAVE ENERGY (a) Do not attempt to operate this oven with the door open since open-door operation can result in harmful exposure to microwave energy. It is impor- tant not to defeat or tamper with the safety interfocks. (b) Do not place any object between the oven front face and the door or allow soil of cleaner residue to accumulate on sealing surfaces. (с) Do not operate the Ov: if it is damaged. It is particular important that the oven do: close properly and that the - is no damage to the: (1) Dos (bent), (2) hinges and latch. (broken or loosened), (3) doc seals and sealing surfaces. (d) The oven should not t adjusted or repaired by anyor except properly qualified servic | personnel. Be sure to read completely operating instructions which fol HOW YOUR MICROWAVE OVEN WORKS Conventional cooking depends on external heat. When you cook in a conventional oven you normally pre-heat it. This heat slowly, over a period of time, penetrates in toward the center of the food and cooks it, Or, when you cook food on the range top, you apply heat from an electric or gas source to cook the food. Both of these methods are cooking by conduction. The Microwave Oven uses high energy, high frequency microwaves. Microwaves are electromagnetic waves of energy, similar to radio, light and heat waves. The Caloric Microwave Oven operates on a fre- quency of 2,450 megacycles. These microwaves are similar to the waves sent out by your television station and radio station. The Federal Communications Commission limits or controls the design of the micro- wave ovens. It is controlled because there are a number of communi- cation systems that operate close to the frequency used in the m wave oven. Microwaves have rv of the same characteristics light waves have. First, they | travel in a straight line. They ca generated, reflected, transmit and absorbed. The basic differe are what materials reflect, trans and absorb them, and how microwaves are generated. In microwave oven the generator producing the microwaves is a | netron. The Magnetron is a vacu tube which operates as an oscill. to generate microwaves. Reflected or absorbed Although microwaves can be flected in the same manner 1 light is, the materials that ref them vary. For example: alumin andstainlesssteel reflectmicrowa The perforated screen in the d of the microwave oven reflect microwaves, yet they transmit lic Paper products transmit microws while light is either absorbed reflected. Glass and china act mu through it. The selective personality of microwaves makes it possible to cook in the microwave oven and still to have the wall, ceiling, floor, cooking container and door remain cool because they reflect the micro- waves. They will warm up slightly from the transfer of heat from the food by conduction, How food is heated Foods are heated in the microwave oven by the absorption of the mi- crowaves. Every inch of all food is - made up of many millions of mol- ecules. These molecules react to the microwave field much the way a compass needle reacts to a magnet. If you put a magnet to one side of a compass, the needle will then point to the magnet. When you move the magnet to the other side of the compass the needle will turn towards the magnet. When this pro- cess is repeated quickly and many, many times, eventually friction in the bearing that supports the needle will cause heat. The molecules in the food react in a very similar manner to the changing microwave field, The molecules tend to align themselves with the field. The mol- ecules that make up the food being cooked in the microwave oven are rotated 180° 2,450 million times a second. This rotation causes the food to heat. Food cooked inside and out generated towards the center of the food as opposed to the outside of the food. Food in the microwave oven is being cooked all the way through at the same time (with more cooking taking place on the outside of the food}. It is, there- fore, possible to prepare a rare, medium, or well done roast. The fact that food is heated throughout makes it possible for the microwave oven to cook food fast. Time re- quired to cook food in the micro- wave oven is solely dependent on how much heat is required through- out the food, and the amount of heat required by the food and the weight of the food. Safety features The safety features built into each microwave oven are designed so that, first of all, you can not operate the unit when the door is open. Cook- ing stops when you push the Stop Button to interrupt cooking. All models have two safety features which keep the microwaves inside the oven. First is the primary door seal that keeps the microwaves from passing around the door. Second, the door gasket is made from a spe- cial vinyl with large amounts of carbon black. If any microwaves should pass by the door seal, this gasket has the ability to absorb them. In addition to Stop/Start switches, all models have back-up interlock switches that operate from AU door motion. These switches are A . +1] located behind the door hinge arms. sa - SH À look inside the Caloric Microwave > Oven As the microwaves penetrate the The drawing demonstrates how the food, a little power is lost to each microwaves are handied inside the successive layer of molecules. Federal regulations require that all manu- facturers of microwave ovens have a permanent record of the owners of each unit, Warning Page. Please read pages 2 and 3 of this book carefully before operating your microwave oven. |1 contains precautions which will help you avoid any possible exposure to microwave radiation or electrical shock. The Caloric Microwave Oven incorpo- rates all the latest in cooking techno- logy. Therefore, we have listed many of the “do's and don'ts” in order that you may fully enjoy all of the fea- tures in a safe convenient way. Also, observing the “do's and don'ts” will insure the most efficient use of the product. “Introduction to microwave cook- ing” There are many recipes in the “Introduction to Microwave Cook- ing coveringa wide variety of foods. Of equal importance, it is designed so that you will be able to follow step-by-step, the actual use of the microwave oven using a “do-it- yourself” demonstration. If you follow these steps you will be using the microwave almost immediately for most of your food preparation. We have also included “First Day Menu” suggestions to allow you to have your family eating their first foods from the microwave oven the very first day you have the unit in your home. For the first few days that you have the unit in your home, we suggest that you keep a cup or glass of water in the unit when itisnot in use. This will help protect the oven if it should accidentally be turned on, causing the oven to operate without a “load” in it. It is possible to damage the Magnetron tube if the unit is op- erated without anything in it. Some things to do and not todo. Be sure to read the sections about the types of cooking utensils you should and should not use. It is important that you do not use any cookware of any kind that is made from metal or has a metal content. The micro- wave oven range will be one of your most prized kitchen appliances and will help you prepare faster, more nutritious meals for your family. THINGS NOT TO DO... Do not operate the microwave oven when it is empty. When there is no food to absorb it, microwave energy can damage the Magnetron tube seriously. Do not use metal cookware of any kind in the microwave oven. It is possible to damage the Magnetron tube, Do not operate microwave oven when door gasket or door seal is damaged. To do so would allow microwave energy to escape. The gaskets must be replaced with a special type from your Caloric Dealer. The walls and floor of the unit are made of stainless steel. If they should become splattered, all you do is wipe them with a paper towel or clean with a mild detergent in warm water and a soft sponge or cloth. To clean glass tray lift up the tray and remove. Wash in warm water and detergent. The removable glass tray is also dish- washer-safe, Replace with rough side down. Never pour water into the bottom of the unit. Do not use an abrasive to clean the inside. It might damage the stainless steel. To clean excessive splattering from the oven walls, allow 1 cup water to boil in the oven for a few minutes. Then wipe the moisture away with a clean, dry towel. Do not use the CALORIC microwave oven glass tray in the lower oven. |1 is specifically designed for use in the microwave oven and may fracture or break if subjected to the high temper- atures produced in conventional cook- ing. Do not remove outer case at any time. The outer case and control panel should not be removed at any time, except by and Authorized Serviceman. If it is re- moved by another person, the warranty is voided. Do not operate unit when empty. Whenever you operate the unit be sure that you have food in it. Other-wise, you might damage the Magnetron. Be sure to return the Registration Card. Your microwave oven range will not be registered in your name unless the registration card with this unit is re- turned to CALORIC Corp., Topton, Pa. 19562. Cleaning the discharge air vent. There will be a slight build up of cooking vapors on the discharge vent (the perforated grill at the top 8 bottom). lt should be cleaned occ: acionally. Do not attempt to remove the vent as it is an integral part of the unit. Clean the air vent with damp cloth. How to clean the splatter shield in- side the unit. The Splatter Shield keeps the top of the unit and stirrer {a fanlike blade that reflects the micro- waves inside the unit) from getting dirty. Normally, a damp cloth will remove any splatter from the shield, Cleaning Range Exterior Exterior painted surfaces and trim can be cleaned with a damp cloth and soapy water. No abrasives, gritty cleaners or steel wool should be used. Vinegar, lemon juice, tomato juice and other acid foods should be wiped away immediately; they may leave a light stain if they fall on a heated surface. The glass on the control panel should be cleaned only with a soft damp cloth and soapy water, never with scouring powder or steel wool. All control knobs can be pulled off to simplify cleaning control panels and replaced on control shafts in minutes. DO NOT use scouring pads to clean burner knobs. The numerals can be rubbed off of the knobs by the abrasive action of the pad. Clean the door, door seal and gasket. Clean both sides of the door, the door gasket, and door closure area with a warm sudsy cloth. A large build-up of food residue can pre- vent proper closure. Do not use harsh abrasive cleaners or steel wool. Before you call the serviceman. If the unit should become inoperative, call your Authorized Serviceman.
