VR-5000 OPERATOR’S GUIDE
1. Recording
To start recording, press the AC breaker on the Power Distribution Unit (PDU) in the Data
Collecting Unit (DCU). Press the Battery breaker as well. When the DC power supply is connected to the VDR as an emergency source of power, press the DC breaker. The VDR records data automatically in both memory of the Data Recording Unit (DRU) and the removable hard disk (HD).

The LEDs on the PDU operate as follows.
LEDs Status Remarks of mains
DC Green Presence of DC power supply if connected
BATTERY Green Presence of DC power from reserve battery
(Blinking during charging)
DCU OK Green Normal operation of DCU processor (NG: Red)
SYS 1 to 3 Orange No error (Other colors: see error code list in the operator’s manual)
2. Stopping recording
Note that the recording is stopped in the following cases;
- During essential maintenance purposes whilst the vessel is in port.
- When the vessel is laid-up.
To stop recording, depress the BATTERY, DC and AC breaker switches in this order. DO NOT
turn off the system by the main breaker on the ship's switch panel while the AC breaker is on. If this is done, the system operates from the reserve battery.
3. Operation on Remote Alarm Panel (RAP)
To silence the alarm, press the ACK button. When the ERROR LED on the Remote Alarm
Panel is on, identify the error by checking the status LEDs on the PDU in the DCU, referring to the operator’s manual. The buttons on the remote alarm panel work as described in the figure below.

4. If an Incident Occurs
Buttons from left
SAVE (w/ protective cover):
Stops recording onto HD only when an incident occurs.
ACK: Stops buzzer sound.
TEST: Used for testing.
1. Press the SAVE button (long press) on the RAP until the SAVE LED blinks.
After completing the save process, the buzzer on the RAP sounds and the SAVE LED stops blinking and lights. At this time, although recording to the HD is stopped in order to protect data in HD, recording at the DRU continues.
Note: Do not press the SAVE button except when an incident occurs.
2. Bring the HD with you when leaving the vessel if possible. Do not turn off the power.
1) Open the DCU with the key.
2) Open the front panel of the Data Processor Unit with the key (see previous page).
3) Turn the lever of HD outward and then turn the key fully counterclockwise.
4) Pull the lever to take out the HD.
Note: Rerecording to the HD is prevented in order to protect data. Follow the procedure below to replace it with a new HD if necessary.
1. Open the DCU with the key and turn off the three breaker switches.
2. Open the front panel of the Data Processor Unit with the key.
3. Turn the lever of HD outward and then turn the key fully counterclockwise.
4. Pull the lever to take out the HD and replace it with a new one.
5. Turn the key for HD fully clockwise.
6. Close the front panel of the Data Processor Unit with the key.
7. Turn on the three breaker switches. Confirm that the SAVE LED of RAP goes off.
8. Close the DCU with the key.
Note: The backup HD may only be replaced in the following situations:
1) When the equipment can be powered off (stopped recording). See previous page.
2) When completing the save process after an incident occurs.
