Installing Printer
Drivers on a Mac
Overview
Mac drivers are often referred to as a PPD (Postscript Printer Description). Macs use a PPD to inform the Mac OX about the type of printer that you have, along with any peripheral devices attached to the printer such as finishers.
Mac-friendly printer drivers tend to hide the PPD deep inside the driver package and let OS X figure out what to do with it. A “Generic” PPD setting could be used but not all features of the printer would be available. It is therefore necessary to obtain a PPD written specifically for your printer.
Installing drivers on a Mac is a two-step procedure:
Step 1: The driver package is downloaded and installed.
Step 2: Add the driver to the Mac and configure it to use the package file installed in step 1. The printer will then be available to print using a correctly configured PPD.
If the CD/DVD that came with the copier is missing, then you will need to download the driver from the internet. The most convenient site to download printer drivers is the Konica Minolta customer support site at www.konicaminolta.co.uk
IN THIS GUIDE YOU WILL LEARN
How to download a driver from the Konica Minolta customer support website.
How to install and configure the driver.

NOTE Sharing preferences can also be accessed from System Preferences
[13]
Selecting the printers correct peripherals
When installing the driver, the Mac doesn’t automatically update itself with any peripherals that are fitted to the printer. If you know the model numbers for the peripherals then it is no problem to input them when prompted, however if for example you are installing the driver and the printer is not located locally, there is a workaround to finding the correct peripherals fitted;
Open up any application that has the FILE → PRINT contextual menu. (Shown below using
TextEdit which is included in all Mac OS versions)
1
File → Print
2
Click [TextEdit]
3
Select Output Method dialog.

Choose the printer that you want to print off a test page from.
3
Click [Open Print Queue].
[17]
4
With the Print Queue window open, click Printer on the Menu Bar and from there select Print Test Page.
Printer presets and default settings
Think of “Presets” as the equivalent of the “Favourites” setting on a windows driver. This is where you can “glue” together different options from within the driver such as single sided +
Black and White printing and saving the settings to a new preset which can be selected before sending a print job.
Default settings are what you get when you have not chosen a Preset which in most cases will be a double sided full colour print.
Method 1: Saving a new printer preset
This method describes how to add a new driver preset and save the preset so that it can be used at a later date.
Example: Make a new preset to print single sided.
From an application window (e.g. MS Word) in the menu bar click on File → Print to open up the print dialog.
[18]
1
Click [Copies & Pages]

Now when you select File → Print → Presets: → Show Presets… you will now see the new saved preset setting which will now be available as an option to choose before sending a print job.
Using Bonjour to set-up a printer
Bonjour is a network discovery technology developed by Apple, Inc. It allows computers and printers to automatically find and connect to each other's services using a new communication protocol (formerly known as Rendezvous) saving time and simplifying tasks such as file sharing and setting up printers.
If the MFD is attached to the network and its IP, Subnet and Gateway IP addresses are all configured then there is an alternative method to configuring the driver.
[21]
1
Ensure that Bonjour is enabled on the MFD (It should be by default)
Log into the MFD as Administrator → Network → Bonjour Setting.
You can accept the existing name, or re-name the Bonjour Name that will be advertised on the network.
2
Download and Install the driver .ppd package (see pages 2-9)
3
Go to System Preferences → Printers & Scanners
4
Click on Add Printer or Scanner
5
Select the Default tab

Continue to configure the driver as per the setup on pages 12-18
Method 2: CUPS Web page
CUPS (Common Unix printing System) is the standards-based, open source printing system developed by Apple for OS X and other UNIX-like operating systems
.
CUPS is the software you use to print from applications like the web browser you are using to read this page. It converts the page descriptions produced by your application (put a paragraph here, draw a line there, and so forth) into something your printer can understand and then sends the information to the printer for printing. Since every printer manufacturer does things differently, printing can be very complicated. CUPS does its best to hide this from you and your application so that you can concentrate on printing and less on how to print. Generally, the only time you need to know anything about your printer is when you use it for the first time, and even then CUPS can often figure things out on its own.
To modify a PPD for a printer and change its presets, you directly access the printers section of the CUPS web page in a web browser using the following URL: http://127.0.0.1:631/printers
[23]
CUPS web page disabled?
1
You may notice that by default, the CUPS web interface is disabled. To enable it you need to type a short command into the Terminal utility (HDD → Applications → Utilities → Terminal)
The command is as follows:
cupsctl webinterface=yes
NOTE You can disable the web interface by substituting the word yes for no.
TIP Copy the text between the quotations.
2
Paste the text in Terminal and press Return.
[24]
3
Back in the web browser, 127.0.0.1:631/printers should now take you straight to the CUPS printers’ page. This will open the CUPS Printer administration page and will show all the printers currently configured on the Mac. For the printer that you wish to change the defaults for, click its name in the Queue Name column.
4
Click on the Administration drop menu and then select Set Default Options.
[25]
5
This will show a new page with a number of headings (these are Hyperlinks); Options Installed,
General, Finishing Options etc.
For this example I will change the 2-Sided default to 1-Sided by clicking on Finishing Options.
NOTE As you will see from the extensive list, almost every parameter is under Fishing options!
6
Next, change Print Type: from 2-Sided to 1-Sided.
[26]
7
Scroll down to the bottom of the page and click [Set to Defaults].
8
At this point an authentication window will appear. Type in the user name and password and the printing defaults will be saved.
[27]
Print a Test page from CUPS
Click Maintenance and select Print Test Page
NOTE There is an additional option here called Print Self Test page which is good for checking print density and copy quality. The regular test page will show more detailed information relating the driver ppd such as Printer Name, Driver Name and version etc
[28]
Print dialog defaults
Unlike Windows printing, access to printer settings such a Duplex, Stapling, – or maybe a device specific feature such as Secure Print, ID and Print etc, is initiated via an application rather than from the driver.
For example, by opening up an application such as Microsoft Word. You would click on File →
The default view is generally Copies and Pages but clicking in the drop-down menu will give you access to various other presets. The default preset views are shown over the next few pages.
