HOW TO ADD A LIGHT KIT
TO AN EXISTING CEILING FAN
Have you ever wished you had a light on your
existing ceiling fan? In 9 easy steps, a light kit
can be added to most fans, adding
functionality to a space that didn't have it
before. Plus, it's easier than you think!

Step 1: Shut off power to the fan
Check for power with a tester or meter before handling wires.
Step 2: Remove the center cap
Locate the screws for the center cap of your ceiling fan and remove.
Step 3: Locate ceiling fan wires
Once the cover is removed, locate the white and black wires; these are the
wires that you will need to connect to the new light kit.
Step 4: Take your light kit out of the package
Locate the white and black wires in your light kit. You will use these to
connect to the ceiling fan.
Step 5: Connecting wires
Feed the ceiling fan wires through the cap that you previously removed
in Step 2. Then, secure the light kit wires to the ceiling fan wires using
wire nuts. Match the white to the white wires, and the black to the black
wires. Make sure they are firmly attached.
Step 6: Attach the light kit
Use the screws from the light kit to secure the light kit to the ceiling fan.
Step 7: Attach the glass
Using the screws from the light kit, secure the glass shades in place. We
recommend tightening these screws by hand.
Step 8: Add the light bulbs
Screw light bulbs into the sockets for each light. Make sure to use the
proper wattage for light bulbs according to the package for your light kit.
Step 9: Restore power and enjoy your new light!
Not all ceiling fans can accept a light kit. Check your particular fan to see if it is capable by checking
to see if the center plate can be removed and if there are appropriate wires to attach to the light kit.
It is best to purchase a light kit that is the same brand as the fan you are adding it to. The finishes of
different brands can be different even if they have the same name, so keep that in mind as well.
