How To – Apply Bandwidth Restriction on a Specific Website Applicable Version: 10.00 onwards Bandwidth is the amount of data passing through a media over a period of time and is measured in terms of kilo Bytes per second (KBps) or Kilo bits per second (Kbps). Quality of Service (QoS) is a method to guarantee a bandwidth relationship between individual applications or protocols. It is a traffic-management approach that allows you to apportion network resources for both mission-critical and normal data, based on the type of network traffic and the priority you assign to that traffic. The primary objective of QoS policy is to manage and distribute total bandwidth on certain parameters like user, firewall, web category or application. QoS policy allocates & limits the maximum bandwidth usage of the user and controls web and network traffic. Policy can be defined/created for: User - It restricts the bandwidth of a particular user. Firewall Rule - It restricts the bandwidth for any entity to which the firewall rule is applied. Web Category – It restricts the bandwidth for the URL categorized under the Web category. To implement restriction, policy is to be assigned through firewall rule. Application – It restricts the bandwidth for the application. To implement restriction, policy is to be assigned through firewall rule. Scenario Apply Bandwidth Restriction on www.youtube.com website for a particular user group. Prerequisite Web and Application Filter module subscribed Configuration You must be logged on to the Web Admin Console as an administrator with Read-Write permission for relevant feature(s). Step 1: Create QoS Policy Go to QoS > Policy > Policy and click Add to add a QoS policy with the parameters as shown in the table below. Parameter Value Description Name ControlYouTube Name to identify the Policy. Duplicate names are not allowed. Policy Based On WebCategory Select any one option to specify for whom the policy is to be created. Specify policy type Policy Type Strict Available Options: Strict - In this type of policy, user cannot exceed the defined bandwidth limit. Committed - In this type of policy, How To – Apply Bandwidth Restriction on a Specific Website user is allocated the guaranteed amount of bandwidth and can draw bandwidth up to the defined burstable limit, if available. Implementation On Total (Upload + Download) Priority Guaranteed – Burstable Upload and Download 7 – [Best Effort – e.g P2P] (Lowest) 8 Total (Upload + Download) Set the bandwidth priority. Priority can be set from 0 (highest) to 7 (lowest) depending on the traffic required to be shaped. Set the guaranteed and burstable bandwidth. Select any one to specify the bandwidth usage. Bandwidth Usage Type Shared Available options: Individual – Allocated bandwidth is for the particular user only Shared – Allocated bandwidth is shared among all the users who have been assigned this policy Click OK and the QoS Policy ControlYouTube will be created successfully. How To – Apply Bandwidth Restriction on a Specific Website Step 2: Create Custom Web Category for the website Go to Web Filter > Category > Category and click Add to create a custom Web Category YouTubeBWRestriction. Specify the Domain as www.youtube.com and Keyword as youtube as shown in the image. Click OK and the QoS Policy will be applied successfully to Custom Web Category. Step 3: Create Web Filter Policy Go to Web Filter > Policy > Policy and click Add button to create a Web Filter Policy with the following parameters. Parameters Value Description Name Limit_Youtube Specify a name to identify the web filter policy Template Allow All Select the template. Enable Reporting Enabled By default, the Internet usage report is generated for all the users. To Bypass Reporting, uncheck Enable Reporting. How To – Apply Bandwidth Restriction on a Specific Website Click OK and the Web Filter Policy Limit_Youtube will be created successfully. Step 4: Add Web Filter Policy Rules Go to Web Filter > Policy > Policy and select the web filter policy created in Step 3. Click Add ans specify the rule parameters as shown in the image. Click OK and the Web Filter Policy Rule will be added successfully. How To – Apply Bandwidth Restriction on a Specific Website Step 5: Apply Web Filter Policy to Group Go to Identity > Groups > Group and select the group on which the restriction is to be applied, say, Marketing. Select Limit_Youtube for Web Filter. How To – Apply Bandwidth Restriction on a Specific Website Click OK to apply settings. Note: - In this article policy has been applied on Group. Policy can also be applied on users and firewall rule similarly. Step 6: Enable QoS on Firewall Rule Go to Firewall > Rule > IPv4 Rule and select LAN_WAN_LiveUserTraffic rule to enable. Click OK and the Firewall Rule will be updated successfully. How To – Apply Bandwidth Restriction on a Specific Website The above configuration will restrict the YouTube website with 64 kbps Bandwidth for group Marketing.
