How to replace the height adjust column assembly, including the cylinder, on a chair?

To replace the height adjust column assembly, follow these steps:

  1. Adjust the chair to its maximum seat height.
  2. Turn the chair upside down and place it on a stand or table.
  3. Remove the base by tapping firmly and alternately on opposite arms near the hub with a rubber or leather mallet.
  4. Slide the plastic telescopic cover all the way down the column.
  5. Remove the height adjust column from the chair control. You can do this using a disassembly tool for the taper fit joint, or by twisting and pulling with a pipe wrench.
  6. Take the telescopic cover from the old column assembly and install it on the new height adjust column assembly by pushing it down from the top of the cylinder column to just past the taper.
  7. Install the new height adjust column assembly by inserting the tapered cylinder end into the chair control housing and tapping firmly with a rubber mallet.
  8. If the aluminum taper adapter remains on the old column, gently tap it off and place it in the base. If it remains with the base, proceed to the next step.
  9. Replace the base assembly by inserting the hub onto the tapered standpipe of the height adjust column, then tap firmly with a rubber mallet.
  10. Turn the chair right up and seat the taper fit joints by sitting in the chair.

Note that if the base is also being replaced, the aluminum taper adaptor is no longer needed and can be discarded with the old base.
