Frequently asked questions

The USB-2-MDIO software tool allows users of Texas Instruments' Ethernet PHYs to access MDIO status and control registers.

An MSP430 LaunchPad is required for use with this GUI. The MSP430F5529 variant of the LaunchPad supports a range of VDDIO levels allowing communications with PHY's at 1.8-V VDDIO.

Connect the MDIO and MDC pins of the LaunchPad to the corresponding pins on the PHY, and connect GND to GND.

Download the MSP430 Flasher tool and use the Flash_MSP430_G2.bat or Flash_MSP430_F5.bat file to flash the LaunchPad.

Unzip and install the GUI. Launch USB-2-MDIO.exe and select the COM port that the LaunchPad is connected to. Select Baud Rate for 9600 and click Open Port.

Open the communication port and run the Find PHY ID command from the File menu. The GUI will attempt to ping the PHY connected by sweeping through all 32 possible PHY IDs.
