Installing IAR PowerPac™ using a network license
This QuickStart card describes how you install and
activate IAR PowerPac™ products with a network
license (also known as a floating license).
For more detailed information, see the Installation and
Licensing Guide, which is included on the product CD as
the file InstallationGuidePP.pdf.
SYSTEM REQUIREMENTS
Recommendations for the license server computer:
● A PC with Windows 2000, Windows XP, or Windows
Server 2003, using a static TCP/IP address.
● A 1 GHz or faster Pentium processor with at least 256
Mbytes of RAM, and 10 Mbytes of free disk space.
On a PC running Windows XP/Service Pack 2, turn off the
Windows firewall or add UDP port 5093 as an exception.
Recommendations for the client computers:
For information about the system requirements of the client
computers, see the Release notes provided on your product
CD.
The installation procedure
Important: If you wish to add this network license to an
already installed IAR license server, consult the Installation
and Licensing Guide for instructions. In that case you should
not follow the procedure described on this QuickStart card!
NETWORK LICENSES
A network license is a multi-user license, located on a
license server and used by multiple users on a network.
The network license is locked either to the computer where
the license server software runs, or to a hardware lock
(dongle). Using a dongle allows you to move the network
license to another server computer, in case of server failure.
The network license can be used on all client computers on
the network where IAR PowerPac is installed. However, the
network license is made for a maximum number of
concurrent users, and the license server software keeps track
of the current number of users.
A. Installing the server software
1 Choose a suitable server computer to act as the license
server (see the system requirements listed above).

Remove any dongles attached to the PC.
The recommended way to install a product with a network
license is the following four-stage procedure:
Insert IAR License Server installation CD. The
installation program should start automatically. If it
does not, run the autorun.exe program from the CD.

First you install IAR license server software on a server
computer.

Select Install the IAR License Server. You must
accept the license agreement when prompted.

You must activate your network license by registering
the product with IAR Systems. Within 5 business days,
you will receive a permanent key for your license.

Select where to place the licensing tool icons in the
Windows Start menu.

You install the permanent key on the license server.

Review the settings for the installation and click Next
to install the program files.

Before the installation has finished, you will be asked if
you want to activate a network license. Select Activate
a network license.
Finally you install IAR PowerPac on the client
computers, by using the permanent key.
Follow the detailed steps below for each stage.
Note: The above procedure does not allow you to install and
run IAR PowerPac on the client computers until you have
received the permanent key from IAR Systems. If you need or
want to run IAR PowerPac on the client computers
immediately after receiving your product package, consult the
Installation and Licensing Guide for an alternative installation
procedure.
To be able to use your network license, you must activate it:
first you register the product with IAR Systems to receive a
permanent key, and then you install the permanent key.

B. Activation step 1:
Registering the product
1 When the activation program starts, click Next. Select
Then repeat the following steps on each client computer:

Insert the installation CD. The installation program
should start automatically. If it does not, run the
autorun.exe program from the CD.

Select Install IAR PowerPac™.
Accept the license agreement when prompted.

Enter your name, company, and the 17-character
license number printed on the CD cover:

Provide the permanent key, either by pasting it from an
email message into the text field, or by reading it from a
file to which it has been saved (see step C 5).

If asked, select either a Complete or a Custom
installation. This step is not always displayed.

Select the IAR Embedded Workbench installation
where you want to install IAR PowerPac.

Start IAR Systems License Manager from the Start
menu. (Make sure you run it with administration
privileges.) Then choose License>Install.
Select the placement of the IAR PowerPac icons in the
Windows Start menu.

Review the settings for the installation and click Next
to install the program files.

Paste the permanent key into the text field. Make sure
to copy and paste all characters, including the # and all
characters following it.
Repeat the above steps on each client computer. You are then
finished with the installation.

When asked, confirm that the license is a network
license.
For license server, register a network license.

Type the 17-character license number printed on the
IAR PowerPac CD cover.

Attach the dongle, if you want to use it.

Select how to register:
● If you register via the web—the preferred choice
—make sure to Submit the resulting page.
● If you choose to register now via email, an email
message is automatically sent to IAR Systems.
● If you choose to register later, the information you
entered is saved in the registration.txt file in
the installation folder. Run the license activation
program later on or send this file to IAR Systems.

Select the type of license lock you want to use, either
Hardware dongle (preferred) or My computer.
Type the registration information and submit it.
C. Activation step 2:
Installing the permanent key
Within 5 business days after registration, a permanent key will
arrive via email. Install it on the license server computer:

Select and copy the permanent key from the email
message, according to the instructions in the message.
Note: To see your license, choose View>All Servers.

Make the permanent key available to all client
computers; send it via email or save it to specific file.
D. Installing the client software
First make sure that the license server is up and running.
