Managing Printers in Windows 10
In Windows 10 there are now 2 ways to manage your printers. The defaulted method is now to let
Windows 10 manage your printer preferences for you. For anyone who prefers the classic method of
managing your own printers (which we’ve always done in the previous versions on Windows), you can
simply turn off the new feature.
Here’s the difference between the two methods:
Let Windows 10 Manage Printing: You cannot assign a default printer for yourself but you can still
choose any printer per print job from your list of available printers. Starting from the very first time you
print in Windows 10, it tracks your printing habits and automatically assumes which printer you’ll use
(depending on the type of document or application) and will have it already pre-selected for you at the
top of your available printers list.
Manage Printing Yourself: As you’re already accustomed to in all the previous Windows versions, you
can assign your default printer by right-clicking the desired printer and clicking Set as Default in the
Devices and Printers Menu shown below and you’ll also have the flexibility to change printers per print
job.
To access this printer window: Use the Search Windows Box and search for Control Panel
Navigate to Control Panel > Devices and Printers
To allow or not allow Windows 10 to manage your printers for you:
Use Search Windows box and search for Devices Desktop App, and launch the app
Then click on Printers and Scanners
Scroll down your listed Printers and Scanners until you see Let Windows Manage My Default Printer
Then choose whether you want the feature OFF or ON
