The Model 4420-[ ] Audio Management Unit (AMU) is designed to be controlled by a pair of
5520-[ ] Audio Control Panels (ACP). The Model 4420-[ ] Audio Management Unit is a remotely controlled electronic unit that operates upon digital signal commands sent to it by the ACP
’s at the pilot and copilot control stations. Each ACP continuously reads the status of all audio control switches and settings of potentiometers on its front panel as well as inputs to it connector, and compiles this information into the form of a digital signal. The digital signal is sent to the Model
4420-[ ] from the
ACP’s in a CANBUS serial proprietary format via a twisted, shielded wire pair.
The Model 4420-[ ] receives and demultiplexes this digital signal and converts it into useful audio control information. The 5520-
[ ] ACP’s amplifies audio from its microphone input and sends it to the Model 4420-[ ].
The Model 4420-[ ] is capable of switching and controlling the volume of up to 15 receiver inputs.
It also switches and controls audio for interphone. In addition, up to four unswitched and unmuted inputs are provided to accommodate auxiliary inputs. The headphone outputs from the 4420-[ ] are sent to the 5520-[ ] where the headphones are connected to the outputs of the ACP
’s. Pilot and copilot cockpit voice recorder (CVR) outputs produce a summation of the headphone and hot microphone audio from each pilot
’s ACP. The hot microphone to CVR audio channel is unswitched and unmuted, thus allowing hot microphone audio to be recorded on the cockpit voice recorder at all times.
Receiver, sidetone, headphone and interphone, and all operating modes are electronically switched and controlled by the digital signal information sent from the ACP
’s. An electronic volume control attenuator is employed in each of the 15 receiver audio input channels. Every receiver input attenuator has 40 dB of range and is digitally controlled. Separate electronic volume control attenuators are provided for headphone audio, sidetone audio, and interphone audio, all with 40 dB range. These volume control attenuators are also digitally controlled. Refer to the applicable ACP installation and operation manual for specific information on control hardware required. Aural warning, auxiliary and CVR audio channels do not employ any individual electronic volume control attenuators; however, the volume of some CVR audio is directly affected by the headphone volume control, interphone volume control and sidetone volume control.
The 4420-[ ] has an aural warning generator that stores prerecorded tones and voice warnings.
Up to 50 tones and voice warnings can be stored for playback. Tones and voice warnings may vary by detail part number.

INSTALLATION AND OPERATION MANUAL
A voice activated switch (VOX) is incorporated in series with the hot microphone input to interphone channel along with a noise reduction circuit. This feature allows interphone operation without coupling of ambient cockpit noise into the amplifier during times when the pilot is not talking and reduces unwanted noise while the pilot is talking.
The VOX is not incorporated in series with the hot microphone input to CVR output channel. The
VOX control knob located on the 5520-[ ] adjusts the pilot MIC VOX threshold (squelch) level along with the level of noise reduction filtering applied to the operator microphone signal by the
Dynamic Vox noise reduction circuit located in the Model 4420-[ ] AMU. Rotating the control fully CCW puts pilot and aux mics in the VOX-HOT (minimum threshold) mode. Rotating the control fully CW operates the pilot and aux
MIC’s in the VOX-PTT (maximum threshold) mode.
VOX threshold should be set to achieve optimal voice activation and noise reduction based on the ambient noise of the environment.
Pushing the VOX control knob IN turns the pilot INPH microphone OFF. When the VOX switch is turned OFF, INPH transmissions will be made from the pilot MIC if the ICS PTT input on the
Model 5520-[ ] is grounded.
Up to four SVC microphone inputs and four SVC headphone outputs are provided for ground crew interphone interface.
Selective voice or ident code filtering is provided on up to four of the receiver audio inputs, intended for NAV and ADF audio. The filter function is also digitally controlled.
All outputs of the Model 4420-[ ] are both open and short circuit protected. All internal adjustments of the Model 4420-[ ] are set to factory standards.
The amplifiers are adjusted for acceptable listening output levels into the proper loads with receiver inputs of 7.75 volts RMS (100 mW). This input level is realized when receivers are set for
100 milliwatts into 600 ohms. If 7.75 volts RMS is greatly exceeded at the inputs, the audio will become distorted due to peak clipping and audio bleed through will be noticed. However, the amplifiers will not be damaged.
Important features of the Model 4420-[ ] are its emergency mode of operation and also its dual redundant Audio Control Board (ACB) backup mode. In the emergency mode, when there is an interruption of supply power to the AMU or ACP unit or a pilot operator switches the ACP
EMR/NRM switch to the EMR position, the Model 4420-[ ] will automatically pass COM2 and
AUX audio (resistively isolated from each other) through to the ACP headphone and CVR outputs.
It will also pass pilot and/or copilot (depending on which ACP is in EMR operation) microphone audio to COM2 microphone output. If power is applied to any one of the AMU Backup +28VDC,
+28VDC-A or +28VDC-B then microphone bias and an amplified interphone circuit resistively coupled to the headphone outputs is provided in emergency mode. Also if power is applied to one of the +28VDC inputs in emergency mode
, logic is provided to electromechanical relays
in the AMU to isolate pilot and copilot microphone inputs in emergency mode unless both transmit simultaneously.
When there is a loss of digital communications between either ACP and the Model 4420-[ ], when there is a continuous built in test failure of one of the AMU’s ACB’s or failure one of the aural warning discrete inputs, the Model 4420-[ ] automatically switches over to backup mode using its

still functional dual redundant ACB, without loss of function to the operator. While in backup mode, headphone volume level is maintained at the same setting realized immediately prior to loss of digital communications. Also, aural warning, auxiliary audio and pilot microphone is also maintained via the dual redundant ACB to the headphone, CVR, COM microphones and the optional speaker outputs as normal. A loss of digital communications can occur if either the AMU or ACP CANBUS controller malfunctions, loses power, or if the twisted, shielded wire pair carrying digital information is somehow disconnected or severed.
Normal operating modes of the Model 4420-[ ] are listed below and are established when the appropriate ACP digital signal is sent to the Model 4420-[ ].
2.0 SPECIFICATIONS
The Model 4420-[ ] is intended for aircraft with two 5520-[ ] Audio Control Panels. The Control

The 4420-[ ] has dual redundant Audio Control Boards (ACBs), if one ACB fails functionality is automatically switched to the other ACB and both users share the amplifiers contained on the functional ACB without a noticeable effect on performance.
Initiated Built in Test circuits upon activation by the I-BIT AMU input discrete will trigger audio tests of every input and output channel and report the result to nonvolatile memory as well as playing a “Test

Continuous Built in Test circuits perform continuous health mo nitoring of the AMU and ACP’s internal functions and logs the information to non-volatile memory. In the special case where the
C-BIT detects an failure of one of the AMU’s ACB’s or aural warning input discrete failure, the AMU will automatically switch both pilot and copilot control to its functional dual redundant audio control board.
Digital control and health information is transmitted between the
4420-[ ] and the Pilot and Copilot 5520-[ ]
’s via a dual redundant
CANBUS serial format using twisted, shielded wire pairs. A
CANBUS that runs between the AMU’s internal ACB’s enables the primary and redundant ACB’s from monitoring each other’s health.
The Universal Serial Bus is an optional feature for maintenance. To be installed as part of future enhancement.
The ARINC 429 interface is optional for controlling AWG alerting signals, in conjunction or in place of the dedicated warning discretes and/or reporting of BUILT IN TEST maintenance data.
The RS232 serial buses are provided for maintenance. Each internal ACB has its own RS232 serial port accessible through the access panel on the end of the AMU enclosure and through the rear connector.

Frequently asked questions
It is controlled by a pair of 5520-[ ] Audio Control Panels (ACP).
It can switch and control the volume of up to 15 receiver inputs, as well as handle interphone audio and provide auxiliary inputs.
The VOX feature, along with noise reduction, allows for interphone operation without transmitting ambient cockpit noise and reduces unwanted noise while the pilot is talking.
If one ACB fails, the Model 4420-[ ] automatically switches to the functional ACB, ensuring continuous operation without disruption to the user.
It needs to be mounted on a metal surface, and it's crucial to ground the mounting rack to the metal aircraft ground structure. The AMU enclosure should be bonded to the aircraft ground structure.
