Printing from Indesign
When printing from Indesign, it is important to check
the page setup and print settings before you send your
work to the printer.
General : This allows you to select the amount of
copies, page ranges, spreads and other options.
Ensure that all your graphic and image files are in the
same folder as your Indesign file, if not it is advisable
to create a folder. Keeping your work in one folder
will help prevent file corruption.
From the menu bar go to ‘File’ then select ‘Print’
from the drop down menu or use the ‘a’ + ‘P’ keys.
A few things to remember before going to print your
document:
Are all your images in the correct location?
Are the fonts used in your file available?
You can change the following options by selecting the
headings from the window on the left of the dialogue
box:
Setup: This allows you to select the ‘Paper Size’ your
document is set to and the orientation (for ‘Spreads’
use A3 paper size and set the orientation to
landscape). In the ’Options’ section select the scale
you wish to print the document at e.g. 100% or ‘Scale
To Fit’.
If your design is right to the edge of the page then it
is advisable to select ‘Scale To Fit’ so that your
design is reduced to the printable area (non of the
printers within the LRC’s are able to print right up to
the edge of the page).
Marks and Bleed: This feature is for preparing your
design for the printing process, but can be useful
when an A4 design is needed to be printed to the edge
of the page. Select an A3 page and then select the
crop marks, this will allow your A4 page to print out in
the centre of an A3 page and when printed you can
trim to size.
Output: This shows the colour format your document
is in e.g. CMYK.
Once all the options have been selected click on ‘Page
Setup’ to select page size and the printer you wish to
print to, then click ‘Ok’. Finally, click ‘Print’ and
your document will be processed to the printer.
If the document has several pages containing graphics
and images then please expect the printing to take
some time, especially at busy periods in the Learning
Resource Centre’s. To speed up the process you can
print your document a few pages at a time.
