RAIDDrive SSDs

RAIDDrive is designed to break the throughput bottleneck in the storage subsystem by removing the bandwidth limitation of the SATA bus. The PCIe x8 interface used by RAIDDrive SSDs supports 2GB/sec bandwidth, three to five times faster than SATA.

Using patent pending RAID architecture that is optimized for NAND flash memory, RAIDDrive is able to support burst read speeds of up to 1.4GB/sec.

A turbocharged cache system with up to 512MB of DRAM cache enables burst write speeds as fast as 1.2GB/sec. RAIDDrive, which houses four discrete

SATA SSDs, comes in a custom aluminum enclosure measuring 255 x 107 x 25.4 mm. Higher capacity RAIDDrive models use the RAIDDrive Expander - a separate PCIe card - to hold a total of eight SATA SSDs.

These 2.5-inch SATA drives all incorporate the latest reliability features including ECC, wear leveling and bad bit management to ensure reliable performance over the life of the drive. They also offer excellent resistance to shock, vibration and dust. Their industry standard form factor makes integration into servers, desktops and laptops a breeze.

Garbage Collection and TRIM Support

Garbage Collection is an odd term for a utility that erases deleted files from the SSD. Garbage collection basically does the same thing as a wiper utility, except that runs in the background, normally when the SSD is inactive. Garbage collection will keep the SSD's performance fresh without the need for manual execution. Garbage collection utilities, like wiper utilities, have to be developed for specific controller/firmware combinations, meaning that different SSDs require different garbage collection utilities.

TRIM is an operating system feature in which the OS will pass down commands to an SSD controller to erase deleted pages from the SSD. When the

TRIM command is enabled, it will execute automatically in the background to always keep the SSD performing like new. TRIM is generally the best method for maintaining SSD performance because it is built into the OS and happens automatically. TRIM is supported by Windows® 7 and Windows

Server 2008 R2. It will be integrated into Linux in the near future. Other operating systems do not support TRIM.
