Preface
Restrictions on Hazardous Substances (RoHS)
Directive 2011/65/EU (ROHS2)—commonly known as the European Union (EU) Restriction on Hazardous
Substances (RoHS)—sets limits on the use of certain substances found in electrical and electronic equipment. The intent of this legislation is to reduce the amount of hazardous chemicals that may leach out of landfill sites or otherwise contaminate the environment during end-of-life recycling. The Directive took effect on July 1, 2006, and it refers to the following hazardous substances:
• Lead (Pb)
• Mercury (Hg)
• Cadmium (Cd)
• Hexavalent Chromium (Cr-V1)
• Polybrominated Biphenyls (PBB)
• Polybrominated Diphenyl Ethers (PBDE)
According to this EU Directive, all products sold in the European Union are fully RoHS-compliant and
"lead-free." (See our website for more information.) Spare parts supplied for the repair and upgrade of equipment sold before July 1, 2006 are exempt from the legislation. Equipment that complies with the
EU directive are marked with a RoHS-compliant emblem, as shown.

Connecting to a PTP Source
Introduction
When connecting SEL-UCIP1 for AES67 use, you will need to connect to a Precision Time Protocol (PTP)
IEEE-1588 source.
The 1588 standard assumes symmetrical path delay. It you have different rate paths (E.g. VSG-4MTG at
100Mbps and UCIP at 10G), the One Way Delay (OWD) calculation is incorrect. Two parameters controls allow SEL-UCIP1 to compensate for this error: Network from Master/Boundary Clock and OWD Offset,
listed in Control (on page 28).
To configure these parameters, follow these steps:
1. From Module Configuration > PTP 1588 > Control, select the Network from Master/Boundary
Clock option that best describes your network configuration.
This parameter makes an OWD calculation based on an assumption of how the switch behaves internally. Not all switches will always behave this way.
2. Using a PTP master with a 2059-1 aligned black output, measure the relative timing of the UCIP-
AES67 SDI output to the PTP master’s black output. E.g. WFM8300.
3. Enter this value in the OWD Offset control, which is also found under Module Configuration > PTP
1588 > Control.

Application Diagram
AES67 audio is not embedded with the video, so it could be sent for example to an audio mixer and then realigned with the video. The real advantage is that the reference alignment and AV timing is done using
PTP so it's going to be much more reliable. For compatibility purposes, when you are using AES67 audio, the SEL-UCIP1 accepts 1-8 channels, but will only process and route channels 1 and 2.
Note: The preferred vendor for switches when working with SEL-UCIP1 is Arista.

Installation
Installation
The SEL-UCIP1 can be installed in SEL-MCP1 and SEL-MCP3 frames. Due to space limitations, the SEL-
UCIP1 cannot be installed in the center position of a version 1 MCP1 frame. There is no slot restriction on installing the module in a version 2 MCP1 frame. You can tell what type of SEL-MCP1 frame you have by looking at the center back of the frame. Version 2 frames are identified with a "V2" label.
See your frame's manual for complete instructions on installing and removing modules.
Note: When installing the SEL-UCIP1 module in a SEL-MCP3 frame, check to ensure that the boardmounted fan module is flush with the heat sink. If the fan is protruding, it may scrape and damage the adjacent MCP module in the frame.
Figure 10: Position of Module Fan
Powering Up a Module
SEL-UCIP1 modules are ready for use when their parameters appear in the Selenio user interface.
Selenio modules are automatically powered up when they are inserted into a live (powered up) frame, and whenever the frame is powered up.
The maximum power consumption of a SEL-UCIP1 module is 40 W.
Upgrading Module Firmware
All module firmware upgrades are activated in the frame controller section of the Selenio MCP3 user interface. Follow this path to find the appropriate parameters: Configuration > Frame Controller >
Configuration tab > Upgrade Firmware. See the Selenio MCP3 frame manual for information on how to upgrade module firmware. In the unlikely event of an upgrade failure, see Upgrade Failure Instructions

Upgrade Failure Instructions
Installation
The SEL-UCIP1 modules include one user-configurable DIP switch array (SW2), located at the card edge next to the extractor. In normal operation, all four switches are in the Off position. In the unlikely event of corrupted software, you may need to temporarily change the setting of Switch 1 for the failsafe mode override. You would be alerted to this problem if a System Recovery Upgrade Required fault was triggered after an upgrade, and the module had finished rebooting.
If a System Recovery Upgrade Required fault is triggered, you should first try using the alternate firmware (see Activating Alternate Firmware in the Selenio frame manual) and then attempt the upgrade again. If this second attempt fails, follow these steps to activate the failsafe mode:
1. Remove the module from the frame and then push Switch 1 to the On position.
Figure 11: DIP Switch Setting for Failsafe Mode
2. Reinsert the module.
3. Install the new module software using the Selenio user interface.
4. Remove the module, and then return Switch 1 to the Off position.
5. Reinsert the module.
The module is now running the new software.
Accessing MIBs
Management Information Base (MIB) files for all modules can be downloaded directly from any Selenio
MCP frame. MIBs are generated on a per-device basis. For example, if there are seven SEL-UCIP1 modules in a frame, only one of the seven MIBs is required, assuming all of the modules are using the same version of software. If the frame includes multiple modules of the same type, but different software versions, the module with the latest version should be used to generate the MIB.
If an older MIB is used with newer firmware (for example, an older version of firmware was used instead of the latest firmware), the new parameters added to the new version will not be available on the MIB, and thus, will not be accessible via the MIB.

Deterministic Video/Audio Switching
In typical broadcast studio applications, switch commands received by the SEL-UCIP1 module need to be deterministic (time accurate). This is particularly important when devices on the network are controlled by Automation.
For the UCIP switch time to be time accurate, the Timestamp Offset parameter allows the switching time to be set. Due to the processing latency of the Software Defined Network Orchestrator (SDNO) software, Ethernet network, Selenio Controller and UCIP module, switch commands are sent sufficiently in-advance of the switch time to compensate for the delay in the system.
Deterministic switching requires addition of ST2059 protocol support to the SEL-UCIP1 module. The
Network-Based Timing and Synchronization (ST2059) protocol is transmitted to the module over the
SEL-UCIP1’s 10G Ethernet ports. These ports are exposed to the external network and can receive
ST2059 protocol messages. The module's software utilizes the ST2059 reference as a sync source to the frame synchronizer as well as providing output alignment.

CTR + 3 SDI In, 4 SDI Out
Use this parameter to enable either the AES67 mode, or Classic UCIP mode.
After the operational mode has been changed, a new parameter ("Confirm
Mode Change?") will appear. Click on "Confirm Mode Change and Reboot" to confirm the mode change. The module will then reconfigure itself and become available for use in about 5 minutes.
Module Faults cause the frame to take recovery actions according to the
Module Fail Action on the controller Redundancy page. The Module Fault
Alarm Priority sets the priority of module alarms on a scale of 1 to 10
(default is None).
Using this parameter, any enabled alarm (with a priority above or equal to the setting) triggers a text string indicating the alarm source. The module also signals the controller that the module has failed so that a backup module is activated, if available.
For more details, see Alarms (on page 50).
The SEL-UCIP1 module operates with either Primary or Secondary Frame
Reference. Primary Frame Reference is the default setting. If the module is installed in an MCP1 frame, the parameter must be set to Primary
Frame Reference.

The selection made in the Module I/O Configuration parameter determines which of the following options are available:
• IP Receiver 1
• IP Receiver 3
• EXT SDI 1
• EXT SDI 3
• EXT SDI 5 (Classic UCIP only)
The content of IP Receiver 1 and IP Receiver 3 is determined by the Next
Source coordinates for each receiver channel, located in the IP Receiver
Table of the IP to SDI block.
This read-only parameter reports the serial number of the module, and is necessary when ordering a softkey option.
These read-only parameters report the versions of their respective components.

When device is master, determines whether to send a "Follow up" message (two step) after the "Sync" message, or just the "Sync" message
(one step).
When device is master, the sync interval will be 2 to the power of this value in seconds. For example, -3 is 0.125 seconds. The range is from -7 to
-1 with a default of -3.
LogMinDelayReq Interval Adj Modifies the logMinDelayReqInterval sent to the clients. The logMinDelayReqInterval will be "SyncInterval +
LogMinDelayReqIntervalAdj" which is the average rate at which clients should send delay request messages to the UCIP when acting as master.
For example, if the Sync Interval was -3, and the LogMinDelayReq Interval
Adj was 1, then the logMinDelayReqInterval will be -2, and thus, clients should send delay request messages at an average rate of 1 every 250ms.

IP Transmitter (Table)
Transmit Interface
Allocated Video Bandwidth
(Mbps)
See IP Transmitter (Table) (on page 32).
The Transmit Interface parameter has two options: Primary Only and
Primary+Secondary. When set to Primary+Secondary, this control enables seamless switching (SMPTE 2022-7).
If you select Primary+Secondary, the FEC function is disabled for all Tx channels. FEC may be enabled only when Primary Only is selected.
This parameter is available in both Classic and AES67 modes.
This read-only parameter reports the cumulative allocated bandwidth for all of the IP Transmitter channels that are enabled. By contrast, the
Allocated Channel Bandwidth under the FEC tab refers only to that particular IP Transmitter channel's data bandwidth.
This parameter is available in both Classic and AES67 modes.

General
The IP Transmitter Table reveals the following parameters under the General heading:
SDI Source
SDI LOS
This read-only parameter indicates which HD-BNC input connector (or CTR
SDI source) is assigned to this IP Transmitter channel.
Enter a value in this field to identify the transmitter channel. Tag
IP Transmitter Enable
Video Timestamp When enabled, this parameter includes video timestamp in the SMPTE
2022-6 header.
Maximum Transmission Rate Set the Maximum Transmission Rate to SD: 270 Mb/sec or HD: 1.5 Gb/sec for this IP Transmitter channel.
Since there are up to six SDI inputs on a SEL-UCIP1 module, it would be possible for the video bandwidth to exceed the 10G Ethernet bandwidth.
To prevent this from occurring, the Maximum Transmission Rate parameter makes it possible to set the maximum bandwidth allowed for each SDI input. The total SDI bandwidth for all six SDI inputs must not exceed 9 Gbits per second (Gb/s). If the transmission rate detected for an
SDI input is greater than the selected Maximum Transmission Rate, this channel is automatically disabled to prevent corrupting the other IP
Transmitter channels.
Channel Bandwidth Status
Use this parameter to enable this IP Transmitter channel. Each of the IP
Transmitters must be enabled separately. IP Transmitter Enable allows the SDI Source signal to be encapsulated into Ethernet frames and sent out through the SFP+ ports.
This read-only parameter confirms that the bandwidth is appropriate for the signal on this channel. If the SDI input’s transmission rate exceeds the
Maximum Transmission Rate, this status parameter will report Channel
Disabled.
Possible values for this channel's loss-of-signal (LOS) parameter are No
Fault or Fault. If an SDI signal is not detected on this IP Transmitter's SDI input, a Fault is reported.

IP Transmitter's data. Possible options are WAN 1 to WAN 6.
This read-only parameter reports the source IP WAN Address for the designated IP Transceiver channel.
This read-only parameter reports the source WAN VLAN ID for the designated IP Transmitter channel.
The value set in the Type of Service field determines the value sent in the
Type of Service byte in the IP header of the Data Ethernet packets. The handling of the Type of Service byte in the IP header is dependent on the network equipment.
Configure the Time to Live parameter to avoid loops in network traffic.
The value in this field specifies the number of hops through network equipment before packets are discarded. This is used to avoid packets being continuously passed around in a loop due to a misconfiguration of the network.
This read-only parameter reports the MAC address of the receiver's primary or secondary SFP+ port. If no destination is using this IP
Transmitter's Destination IP Address, the parameter reports DST
Unreachable.

Packet Delay Variation
(PDV) (ms)
Use this control to set the maximum network IP jitter (Packet Delay Variation) in milliseconds. The range is 0 to 50 ms in Classic mode or 0 to 10 in AES67 mode, with a default of 1 ms.
Seamless Max Path
Differential (ms)
This control sets the maximum path differential for seamless protection (in milliseconds). The range is 0 to 150 ms in Classic mode or 0 to 10 in AES67 mode, with a default of 1 ms.
Minimum Required
Playout Delay (ms)
Playout Delay
This read-only parameter reports the minimum required playout delay level in milliseconds. The recommended playout delay range is 0 to 260 ms in classic mode, or 0 to 10 ms in AES67 mode.
Note: If both Packet Delay Variation (PVD) and Seamless path Differential are set to a high rate, the playout delay requirement may be greater than the maximum allowed by SEL-UCIP1, especially in AES67 mode. If you encounter this problem, lower the setting on either one or both of the PDV and Seamless Path Differential parameters.
This parameter sets the desired nominal delay, with a range of 1 to 320 ms in
Classic mode or 1 - 10 in AES67 mode (8 ms is the default). The Playout Delay value should be equal to--or greater than--the Minimum Required Playout Delay (ms) status value. The Minimum Required Playout Delay is the sum of the Packet Delay
Variation (PDV) and Seamless Max Path Differential parameter values, plus some overhead value.
Warning: During the adjustment of this parameter, the video output will have disturbances.
Buffer Mode
When left at its default setting of TR04 Mode, the module automatically locks to incoming PTP. Alternatively, you can manually force it to non-TR04 mode, where the module will ignore incoming PTP.

Setting Up Your SEL-UCIP1
When in Make After Break Switch Mode, as set in IP Receiver (Table) > General (on
page 39), this value (measured in milliseconds) is how long this device will wait for
the current stream to disappear before timing out on the Next Source switch.
IP Receiver (Table)
The IP Receiver table has the following sub-sections accessed through the drop-down menu:
• Audio DMB Status (see "Audio Control/Status" on page 44)
• IP WAN Primary and Secondary (see "IP WAN (Primary and Secondary)" on page 44)
• Audio Embedding (on page 46)
Before configuring the values in the primary and secondary IP Receiver tables, ensure that you are aware of the following conditions:
• WAN Select reflects both the primary and secondary as one parameter choice (where in the IP WAN table, the primary and secondary interfaces can be specified together).
• Values that are entered into the Next IP Address and Next UDP Port fields (and that are then activated using Take > Apply) will appear in the Next Source field. Additionally, values can be changed directly in the Next Source field. In both cases, the result is reflected in the "Current" IP
Address and UDP Port parameters that appear on the same GUI page. The Next Source field will populate its values back to the Next IP Address and Next UDP Port fields
• Ensure that you configure all primary and secondary WANS before inserting any Next Source values.
Once you have entered the values in the Next Source field, the configurations take effect when you press Tab or Enter on your keyboard, or when you click outside of the field.
• Next Source values must be unique for IP Address, UDP Port, and VLAN ID, on both primary and secondary WANs, and at least one change is needed for one of the three parameters in both primary and secondary. Therefore there must be at least one change in the primary, and one change in the secondary for the switchover to occur. Exception: If another SEL-UCIP1 receiver has the exact same settings, the switch is allowed
.
• You can choose to disable the secondary filtering. There are three ways to do this: remove the secondary entry in the Next Source field, set the secondary Next Source value at 0.0.0.0:0, or simply insert the primary:port values in the field.
• The IP Receive Port Numbers +2/+4 of the media UDP Port are reserved for FEC functions. You cannot enter a value that is +2/+4 of an existing IP Receive Port Number with the same chosen IP
Address and VLAN ID.
• The primary IP Address, IP Receive Port Number, and VLAN ID (whether they are multicast or unicast) cannot be the same as the secondary IP Address, IP Receive Port Number, and VLAN ID. An
IP Address value of 255.255.255.255 is invalid in all configurations.
• The Source and Destination IP Addresses and UDP Port parameter values are not restricted by the module. (For example, the Destination IP Address will allow you to set an abnormal value of
224.0.0.0.) Ensure that you use caution when entering values in these fields.

Selenio SEL-UCIP1
Installation and Operation Manual Setting Up Your SEL-UCIP1
• When setting a new IP address and UDP Port on an IP Receiver, the SEL-UCIP1 will attempt a clean
& quiet switch to the new video signal. However, if the requested video signal isn’t present at the module’s 10G network input at the time of the switch, that IP Receiver may output frozen or old video data until the new signal is present.
SDI Loopback Feature
Using the SDI Loopback feature, you can route any of the SEL-UCIP1 SDI inputs to any of the SDI outputs in the same module. To activate this feature in the user interface, enter a value in the IP Address, UDP
Port, and (optionally) VLAN ID field in an IP Receiver channel. (These values must match the IP Address,
UDP Port, and optional VLAN ID fields of an IP Transmitter channel.)
Once these values are matched, the Transmitter channel’s data is routed to the IP Receiver channel’s output. This routing includes video and audio frame synchronization of the looped-back SDI input.
Example
An IP Transmitter has the following settings:
• Primary Destination IP Address: 239.1.1.1
• Primary Destination UDP Port: 1100
Enter the same values for any IP Receiver as shown:
• Next Primary IP Address: 239.1.1.1
• Next Primary UDP Port: 1100
In this case, since the receiver values match those of the transmitter, the SDI input for the given IP
Transmitter will be routed to the SDI output of the given IP Receiver within the same physical module.
This concept may also be extended to include secondary IP addresses, UDP ports and VLAN IDs.
If a unicast address is entered into the IP transmitter destination IP address, it is not possible to loopback that video signal unless the IP transmitter destination IP address matches the module’s own IP
WAN IP address.
For example, on an IP Transmitter channel an address of 192.168.1.1 is entered. In order to loopback that video source to an SDI output, the IP WAN’s IP address must also be set to 192.168.1.1. Then, in the
IP Receiver channel, if you enter 0.0.0.0 for the Next Primary/Secondary IP Address, the video signal loops back.

Switch Mode This read-only parameter displays the switch mode for the selected channel. Make Before Break is the preferred option, but can only be used when the current Max Receive Rate (above) multiplied by two and added to the Max Receive Rate of all the other channels is less than 10G.
In Make Before Break mode, the "Next Source" stream is acquired by
IGMP Joins. The previous stream is removed after a clean transition of video and audio by IGMP Leaves. There must be enough bandwidth remaining on the 10G Ethernet Links to have the "Next Source" stream to be present alongside the current stream. If there is an over subscription of bandwidth, the other channels will be disrupted due to Ethernet packets being dropped.
In Make After Break mode, the current stream is lost by IGMP Leaves. If you receive an error message under "Switch Error" indicating that the switch failed due to timeout, change the IGMP Leave Delay parameter
value (see Video Rx (on page 37)), then perform the switch again by
clicking Take. Assuming the timeout does not occur, after waiting for the delay indicated in the IGMP Leave Delay parameter and for the current stream to be lost, the "Next Source" stream will be acquired by IGMP joins.
There will not be a clean transition of video and audio in this switch mode.
Make After Break will only work if the amount of bandwidth being received by the device can dynamically change due to IGMP Leaves/Joins or with SDNO. Otherwise Make After Break will always fail with a timeout message.
Since Make Before Break switch mode is more desirable than Make After
Break, the device may decide to perform a Make Before Break on a channel that is indicated as Make After Break. This is possible due to receiver channels sharing the same IP stream. Shared IP streams do not consume any more bandwidth than when the IP stream is non-shared.

Next Source
Setting Up Your SEL-UCIP1
This is a read/write parameter that sets the primary and secondary source
IP addresses for each receiver channel. Values that are entered into the
Next IP Address and UDP Port fields and that are then activated (using
Take > Apply) will appear in the Next Source field. Additionally, values can be changed directly in the Next Source field. In both cases, the result is reflected in the "Current" IP Address and UDP Port parameters that appear on the same GUI page.
If values for an IP Address and UDP Port combination are entered when there isn’t an actual source in the incoming 10G feed, the module will either freeze or output black until the requested feed is available.
The format for this parameter is: Primary IP address:Primary UDP
Port;Secondary IP address:Secondary UDP Port. For example,
224.1.1.1:11000;224.1.1.2:12000
Switch Error Indicates whether an error has occurred on the recent switch.
Switch Status This read-only parameter confirms the success of the switch to the next source. The possible values are: Ready, Switching, Switch Complete, and
Switch Failed.
Timestamp Offset The offset is measured in video samples.

Audio Sync
SRC Status
SRC (1 to 8) Control
The characters in this read-only parameter each represent an audio sample rate converter. E = Engaged and B= Bypassed. Both the left and right audio channels of an audio pair are either Synchronized (Engaged) or not Synchronized (Bypassed). Non-PCM audio data must be Bypassed around the Audio Synchronizer; otherwise it will be corrupted.
These controls configure the operation mode of the sample rate converters. Options are Engage, Auto, and Bypass.
When an SRC Control parameter is set to Auto, the Audio Channel Status bits determine whether the audio data is PCM or non-PCM, and whether the audio data is passed through the Audio Sample Rate Converters (SRC).
The Engage option always forces the audio data through the audio SRC, and Bypass always forces the audio data around the audio SRC.

Installation and Operation Manual Laser Safety for Fiber Optic Back Modules
Laser Safety for Fiber Optic Back
Modules
WARNING!
Use of controls, adjustments, and procedures other than those specified in this document may result in hazardous laser radiation exposure.
Optical fiber telecommunication systems use semiconductor laser transmitters that emit infrared light that is normally not visible to the human eye. Although a conventional laser produces a small beam of light, the power density is very high, and it can damage your eyes.
If a beam of laser light enters the eye, the eye magnifies and focuses the energy on the retina. The energy that reaches the retina can be as much as 100,000 times more than at the cornea and, as a result, it can burn the retina.
Laser transmission products are classified in four major groups (Class 1, 2, 3, and 4), according to their emissions and potential for causing injury. Fiber optic transmitter modules in this series are designated
Class 1.
Precautions for Enclosed Systems
In its normal operating mode, an optical fiber communication system is totally enclosed and presents no risk of eye injury. However, if the fiber optic cables that interconnect various components of an optical fiber disconnect or break, you may be exposed to laser emissions. Also, technicians may be exposed to laser emissions during installation and servicing.
Unlike some other laser designs, semiconductor lasers have a highly divergent beam that decreases rapidly with distance. The greater the distance, the less energy will enter the eye, and the less potential risk for eye injury.
WARNING!
Eye damage may occur if an optical instrument such as a microscope, magnifying glass, or eye loupe is used to stare at the energized fiber end.
Under normal operating conditions, optical fiber telecommunication systems are completely enclosed; nonetheless, observe the following precautions:
• Do not stare into optical connectors or broken fibers.
• Ensure technicians have satisfactorily completed an approved training course before performing installation or maintenance.
• Ensure there are appropriate warning labels near the optical ports of the modules.

Selenio SEL-UCIP1
Installation and Operation Manual Laser Safety for Fiber Optic Back Modules
Precautions for Unenclosed Systems
During service, maintenance, or restoration, an optical fiber telecommunication system is considered unenclosed. Under these conditions, follow the practices described below.
CAUTION!
Only authorized, trained personnel shall be permitted to do service, maintenance, and restoration.
1. Avoid exposing the eye to emissions from unterminated, energized optical connectors at close distances.
2. Ensure that only authorized, trained personnel use optical test equipment during installation or servicing.
3. Turn off all laser sources before scanning a fiber with an optical test set.
4. Keep all unauthorized personnel away from the immediate area of the optical fiber systems during installation and service.
For guidance on the safe use of optical fiber communication systems in the workplace, consult ANSI
Z136.2, American National Standard for Safe Use of Lasers in the U.S. or outside the U.S., IEC-60825,
Part 2.

Inspecting and Cleaning Fiber Optic
Connections
When connecting fibers to a back module, ensure that you do not touch the end of the fiber, or allow it to become dirty. Small amounts of microscopic dust or other contaminants can seriously impair or disable a fiber optic network. If you touch the end of a fiber prior to connecting it to the back module, or otherwise allow it to become dirty, you must carefully inspect and clean the connection.
This table lists some typical contaminants of a fiber optic connection.

Comments
Laser Safety for Fiber Optic Back Modules
Can block up to 1% of the light transmission, creating a loss of 0.05 dB
Although microscopic, the particle can completely block the fiber core
Typically 50 to 75 microns in diameter
Oil
Film residues
Powdery coatings
Frequently caused by touching
Can accumulate from vapors or smoke
Can be left behind after water or other solvents evaporate
Important Points
• Before you begin cleaning, always inspect the fiber connections.
• Inspect and clean both fiber ends every time you make a connection.
• Keep a protective cap on unplugged fiber connectors.
• Do not touch the end of a fiber.
• Store unused protective caps in a clean resealable container, located nearby for easy access.
• Do not reuse cleaning tissues or swabs.
• Do not allow alcohol or another wet cleaning agent to dry on a fiber end.
• Never touch the dispenser tip of an alcohol bottle or any clean portion of a tissue or swab.
• Use care when handling the fiber; do not twist or pull.
• Keep your cleaning fluids away from open flame or spark.

Figure 13: Fiber Optic Cross-Section
Inspection Procedure
To inspect and clean the fibers, follow these steps:
1. Ensure the fiber is not "live."
WARNING!
Eye damage may occur if an optical instrument such as a microscope, magnifying glass, or eye loupe is used to stare at an energized fiber end.
2. Inspect the fiber endface with a fiberscope.
3. If the fiber endface is clean, return to the installation instructions; if the connector is dirty, proceed to the dry cleaning instructions below.
Dry Cleaning Procedure
If you are using cartridge- or pocket-style dry cleaning tools, follow the manufacturer’s directions. If you are using lint-free wipes, follow these steps:
1. Fold the lint-free wipe four to eight times into a square, taking care to avoid touching the cleaning surface of the wipe.
2. Lightly wipe the fiber tip in the central portion of the lint-free wipe.
© 2016 Imagine Communications Corp. Proprietary and Confidential. Version 2.0 | Page 55
Selenio SEL-UCIP1
Installation and Operation Manual Laser Safety for Fiber Optic Back Modules
CAUTION: Do not scrub the fiber. Excessive rubbing will leave scratches.
3. Repeat the wiping action on another clean section of the wipe or a new wipe.
4. Inspect the connector again with the fiberscope.
5. If the connection is clean, return to the installation steps; if the connector is still dirty, proceed to the wet cleaning instructions.
Wet Cleaning Procedure
Using 99.8% isopropyl alcohol and lint-free wipes, follow these steps to wet clean the fiber:
1. Fold the wipe into a square, about 4 to 8 layers thick.
2. Moisten one section of the lint-free wipe with one drop of 99.8% alcohol, ensuring that a portion of the wipe remains dry.
3. Lightly wipe the fiber end in the alcohol-moistened portion of the lint-free wipe.
4. Immediately repeat the wiping action on the dry section of the wipe, removing any residual alcohol.
5. Inspect the fiber endface again, and if necessary, repeat the wet cleaning with another clean section of the lint-free wipe.
CAUTION!
Do not scrub the fiber. Excessive rubbing will leave scratches.
6. Dry clean any remaining residue, and then inspect the connector again.
7. If the contamination persists, repeat the dry and wet cleaning procedure until the endface is clean.
If the fiber end still remains dirty after repeated cleaning attempts, call Customer Service for further instructions; if the fiber end is clean, return to the installation instructions.
