RECYCLING
Please observe the local regulations regarding
the disposal of packing materials, exhausted
batteries and old equipment.
o All redundant packaging material has been
omitted. We have done our utmost to make
the packaging easily separable into three
mono-materials:
— cardboard (box)
- expandable polystyrene (buffer)
— polyethylene (bags, protective foam
sheet)
e Your set consists of materials which can be
recycled if disassembled by a specialized
company.
* Do not dispose of exhausted batteries with
your household waste.
* Place the system on a hard, flat surface so
that it does not tilt.
* Before replacing or removing the batteries,
always switch off the system first and wait
until the CD display goes out.
* The amplifier produces heat which must dis-
sipate freely. Do not cover any ventilation
slots and make sure that there is sufficient
ventilation around the system. A minimum
gap of 15 cmis necessary.
The type plate can be found on the bottom of
the set.
Recording is permissible insofar as copyright
or other rights of third parties are not infringed.

POWER SUPPLY
Battery supply for the set (optional)
Whenever convenient, use the mains supply if
you want to conserve battery life.
e Open the battery drawer and insert as
shown eight batteries, type R20, UM1 or D-
cells {preferably alkaline), with the correct
polarity as indicated by the ‘+’ and *—
symbols on the battery drawer.
Remote control batteries
* Open the battery door and insert two
batteries, type R03, UM4 or AAA (preferably
alkaline).
* Replace the battery door, making sure the
batteries are firmly and correctly in place.
The set is now ready to operate.
Incorrect use of batteries can cause electrolyte
leakage and will corrode the compartment or
cause the batteries to burst. Therefore:
* Do not mix battery types: e.g. alkaline with
carbon zinc. Only use batteries of the same
type for the set or for the remote control.
* When inserting new batteries, do not mix
old batteries with new ones.
e Remove the batteries when they are ex-
hausted or if they will not be used for more
than a week.
The battery supply is switched off when the
set is connected to the mains. To change over
to battery supply, pull out the plug from the
MAINS~ socket.
Mains supply
e Check if the mains voltage as shown on the
type plate (on the bottom of the set) corres-
ponds to your local mains voltage. If it does
not, consult your dealer or service organiza-
tion.
If your set is equipped with a voltage
selector, set the selector according to the
local mains
e Connect the mains lead to the MAINS~
socket and the wall socket.
When connected to the mains, the system is
always energised.To switch off the mains
supply completely, pull the mains plug out of
the wall socket.
Note: The display back light and the STANDBY
indicator only operate when using the mains
supply.

REMOVABLE SPEAKERS
Taking off the speakers
e Press the levers {found on the back corner
of the speakers) away from the cabinet unit,
and slide the speaker upwards, see fig. 2.
Attaching the speakers
e Slide the speakers from above in the
sleeves on the sides of the set cabinet. The
speakers will click into position.
CONNECTING THE SPEAKERS
* Connect the right speaker to the R terminal,
with the red or marked wire to O and the
black wire or unmarked to O.
e Clip the exposed portion of wire into the
corresponding colour terminal.
* Repeat the wiring procedure for the left
speaker to terminal L, making sure that you
connect the red wire to © and the black wire
to ©.
POSITIONING THE SPEAKERS
You will find the best speaker position by
experimenting. Placing the speakers on the
floor will increase the bass response. Placing
the speakers behind curtains, furniture etc. will
reduce the treble response and the stereo
effect. The ideal position is obtained when the
2 front speakers and the listening position
build an equilateral triangle and the speakers
are at ear-height.

5. OPERATION
GENERAL OPERATION OF THE SYSTEM
* To switch on the system, press the POWER
button on the system or STANDBY © on the
remote control.
e To select the sound source, use the
CD/TAPE/TUNER selector .
e Adjust the sound using the VOLUME A Y,
and the DSC or DEB controls (see figure on
page 3)
— The DBB function, if in use, is automatically
cancelled when you select a DSC function,
and the DBB indication will disappear from
the display. Similary, your selected DSC
function will be cancelled if you decide to
use DBB.
— If headphones are connected, the speakers
are switched off.
* To switch off the system, press the POWER
button on the system or STANDBY O on the
remote control
When in AC operation the STANDBY
indicator lights up.
e [n battery operation;
— Back light for display and the STANDBY
indicator will not light up to save battery
power.

DIGITAL TUNER
FM, MW (AM) or LW Tuning step (not all
versions)
Before using the set, set the 9/10 KHZ tuning
step for FM, or AM to the correct position as
follows:
— 10 KHz for use in North and South America
— 9 KHZ in all other countries.
Usually, the frequency step has been preset in
the factory in your country.

To change the tuning step
e Switch off the STANDBY (POWER).
e Set the tuning step selector to 9 KHz or 10
KHz by sliding the tuning step switch, found
on the back of the set.
e Press STANDBY (POWER) again to switch
on the set.
— All preset stations will be lost and need to
be programmed again.

RADIO RECEPTION
* Set the CD/TAPE/TUNER selector to TUNER.
— The display briefly shows TUNER

o Adjust the sound using the VOLUME 4 Y,
and DSC or DBB controls.
* Select the waveband by pressing BAND.
— The selected waveband will appear on the
display.
Tune to a radio station either automatically,
manually or by using the presets.
When STEREO appears, you are receiving a
FM-stereo transmitter.
* To improve radio reception:
— For FM, pull out the telescopic aerial. To
improve FM-reception, incline and turn the
aerial. Reduce its length if the FM-signal is
too strong (very close to a transmitter).
— For AM, the set is provided with a built-in
aerial, so the telescopic aerial is not needed.
Direct the aerial by turning the whole set.
TUNING TO A STATION
Automatic tuning
e Press TUNING te< or »» until the frequency
on the display starts running.
Release TUNING «« or »». The radio
automatically tunes to a station with
sufficient reception.
e |f the transmitter found is not the desired
one, repeat the previous steps.
Manual tuning
This could be useful if you already know the
frequency of the station you wish to listen to.
o Press TUNING &« or »»i until the frequency
on the display starts running.
* When you approach the required frequency,
press the TUNING button again or press the
opposite TUNING button to stop.
Presets
You can store up to 40 stations in the memory
of the tuner 20 FM, 20 AM. When tuning to a
preset station, the preset number is indicated
on the display.
* Tune to a station either automatically or
manually.
* Press PROG to programme the desired
station.
— The preset number # / will start flashing on
the display up to 10 seconds.
e Press the PRESET button (up or down) to
allocate a number from 1 to 20 (depending
on the selected waveband) for your selected
station.
Press PROG again to confirm the setting.
— The preset number will stop flashing.
Repeat these steps to store other
frequencies and presets.
You can clear a preset number by storing
another in its place.
Selecting a preset radio station
o Press the PRESET button {or PRESET UP on
the remote control) until the desired preset
number appears.

the CD.
* Always hold the CD at the edge and always
store it in its box after use, label facing up.
* To remove dust and dirt
breathe on the CD and wipe
it with a soft, lint-free cloth in
a straight line from the centre
towards the edge. Cleaning
agents may damage the CD.
Do not expose the CD to
rain, moisture, sand, or to
excessive heat e.g. from heating equipment
or in motor cars parked in the sun.

— The last (P) and total programmed track
numbers: when a CD program is in stop
position or has reached the end.

CD (see Troubleshooting).
* Close the CD door. The CD-player scans the
contents list of the CD.
e Playback will start by pressing
PLAYePAUSE IL.
* Adjust the sound by using the VOLUME A Y,
and the DSC or DBB controls.
* For brief interruptions, press
PLAY ePAUSE FIL.
— To continue playback, press PLAY ePAUSE DI
again.
* To stop playback, press STOP =.
Note:
CD playback will also stop:
by pressing OPENeCLOSE;
— when the end of the CD is reached;
if you change the function selection;
if the batteries are exhausted or if the
power supply is interrupted.
— if you press POWER on the set or
STANDBY & on the remote control.

Selecting another track
By briefly pressing the SEARCH w« Or »» but-
ton, you can jump to a next or previous track,
or you can select a track before starting
playback in the STOP position.
a. During PLAY
SEARCH »» - go to the next track (title)
You can jump to the next track by pressing
SEARCH »» once.
If you want to skip more than one track,
press SEARCH »» more than once until the
display shows the desired track number.
SEARCH «« - go to the previous track (title)
If you want to repeat the running track from
the beginning, press SEARCH &« once. lf
you want to repeat one of the previous
tracks, press SEARCH re more than once
until the display shows the desired track
number.

In position STOP with a CD inserted you can
select the desired track using SEARCH &« or
»»i until the display shows the desired track
number. Press PLAYePAUSE PII to start
playback.
Searching a passage within a track
You can search for a passage within a track. The
CD is played at low volume and at high speed,
however, the sound is still recognizable.
* During playback, keep the SEARCH 1«« or »»
button pressed. and release the button as
soon as you recognize the desired passage:
the CD will be played in the normal way
from this passage.
DIFFERENT PLAYBACK MODES:
SHUFFLE/REPEAT
You can change the playback mode before or
during playback for the REPEAT modes. The
SHUFFLE mode has to be activated before CD
playback.
® To select the playback mode, press
SHUFFLE or REPEAT until the desired
function appears on the display.
* During playback you can skip to the next
track by using SEARCH mi. It is not possible
to select a previous track. If you press
SEARCH «« the current track number will
start from the beginning.
In the REPEAT modes
REPEAT ALL: Repeats the entire CD
REPEAT 1: Plays the current track
continuously
In the SHUFFLE modes
SHUFFLE: Tracks are played in random
order
SHUFFLE REPEAT ALL: To repeat the CD
continuously in random order.
SHUFFLE REPEAT 1 (=REPEAT 1): Plays
the current (random) track continuously
— In the stop position, selecting a previous
track is not possible.
— The SHUFFLE function cannot be combined
with PROGRAM.
e To return to normal playback mode, pres
the respective SHUFFLE or REPEAT buttons
until the various SHUFFLE/REPEAT modes
are no longer shown on the display.
* You can also press STOP E twice to quit the
playback mode you are in.

PROGRAMMING TRACK NUMBERS
You may store at most 20 tracks in the memory in
the desired sequence. When playing, you will only
hear the stored tracks in the selected sequence.
The PROGRAM mode can also be combined with
the two REPEAT modes.

e In the STOP position, press PROGRAM once.

Select and store all desired tracks of a CD
this way.
— If you try to store more than 20 tracks, the
program sequence goes back to the first
programmed track appears. The new
programmed track will replace the originally
stored track.
* To play the selection, press PLAY*PAUSE PIL
Playback will start with the first track of the
program.
When pressing STOP M and also when all
tracks have been played, playback will stop
and the last programmed track is shown.

Checking the program
From the STOP-position, press PROGRAM
again and again: the display shows all
programmed track numbers in sequence.
— If you press PROGRAM repeatedly to check
from the STOP position or when the CD
program has finished playback, the display
sequence will indicate the following:
- The CD's total track number and playing
time;
— the last programmed track;
— jf the program is not full, 7777 starts
flashing and you may program additional
tracks;
— if the program is full, your first
programmed track number is shown;
— your program sequence
Erasing a program
You can erase the contents of the memory:
— by pressing STOP M during programming.
in the STOP mode by pressing STOP IM
again;
in the PLAY mode by pressing STOP HR
twice;
by opening the CD door using OPENeCLOSE.

Set the CD/TAPE/TUNER selector to TAPE.

CASSETTE RECORDING
COMPACT CASSETTES
e For recording, use a NORMAL cassette (IEC
type I) on which the tabs are not broken out.
— This deck is not suited for recording on
CHROME (IEC II) or METAL (IEC TV)
cassettes.
* For playback, any cassette type may be in-
serted.
e At the very beginning and end of the tape,
no recording will take place during the 6
seconds when the leader tape passes the
recorder heads.
e To prevent the accidental erasure of are-
cording, keep the cassette
side to be safeguarded in
front of you and break out
the left tab. Now, recording
on this side is no longer pos-
sible.
To render this safeguard ineffective, cover
the aperture with a piece of adhesive tape.
Do not expose the cassettes to rain,
moisture, sand, or to excessive heat e.g.
from heating equipment or in motor cars
parked in the sun.
Preparation
* The recording level is set automatically.
e Press STOPeOPEN H À to open the
cassette holder.
e Insert the cassette with the
full reel on the left-hand
side.
e When monitoring during re-
cording, adjust the sound
using the VOLUME A Y,
and the DSC or DBB controls. These
controls do not affect the recording.
e For fast winding, press SEARCH << or »>. To
stop, press STOPeOPEN H À.
e When the end of the tape is reached, the
cassette keys are released.

Starting and stopping the recording
* Start recording by pressing RECORD e. The
PLAY > key is then automatically pressed too.

* Torecord the other side of the cassette,
turn it over by hand, rewind it to the be-
ginning and press RECORD e.
Recording from the radio
* Set the CD/TAPE/TUNER selector to
TUNER.
* Tune to the desired radio station (see
TUNING).
* When STEREO and FM appear on the
display, you are receiving a FM-stereo
transmitter. A disturbing noise, due to a
weak FM-stereo signal can be suppressed
by setting the BEAT CUT/FM-FM ST switch
to the FM (mono) position.
— The STEREO indication will now disappear
from the display and you will hear and
record the FM station in mono.
— If you hear a whistling sound during
recording of AM stations, this sound can be
suppressed by setting the BEAT CUT switch
to another position.
e Start recording by pressing RECORD o.

CD synchro - recording from the CD-player
* Set the CD/TAPE/TUNER selector to CD.
* [tis not necessary to start the CD-player se-
parately: by pressing RECORD € the CD-
player starts automatically.
— Immediately before CD synchro recording
starts, the display will show 3,2 and 1 in
sequence indicating the 3 second
countdown.
— If the CD-player is in STOP position,
recording will start from the beginning of
the CD (or the programmed selection);
— if the CD-player is in STOP position and a
certain track is selected using the
SEARCH 1«« or »»: buttons, recording will
start from the beginning of that track.
— if the cassette stops on reaching the end
of a side or STOP*eOPEN IN A has been
pressed (first time interruption only), the
CD will automatically go onto PAUSE. CD
playback will continue after the 3 second
countdown vhen you have inserted a
new tape or turned the tape over, and
RECORD has been pressed again.
Recording a selected CD passage.
— to start a recording in the middle of a
track, play the CD in the normal way. As
soon as the desired passage is reached,
set the CD player to pause by pressing
PLAYePAUSE Il.
— by pressing RECORD € and also the CD
PLAYePAUSE PII button again, the CD-
player and the recording will start.

10. TROUBLESHOOTING

If a fault occurs, first check the points listed below before taking the set for repair.
If you are unable to remedy a problem by following these hints, consult your dealer or service
centre.
WARNING: Under no circumstances should you try to repair the set yourself, as this would
invalidate the guarantee.
POOR BASS SOUND OR CHANGE IN
PROBLEM SOUND QUALITY
— POSSIBLE CAUSE — Speakers are not in phase
e REMEDY * Connect speakers properly, O to ©-pole (red
or marked wire); O to O-pole (black or

— Electrostatic discharge
* Before switching off the set, press the
RESET button (on the side panel) by using a
small tool. Disconnect the mains plug and
reconnect after a few seconds.

The benefits given to the purchaser by this
warranty are in addition to all other rights and
remedies, which, under the Trade Practices
Act or other Commonwealth or State law, the
purchaser or owner has in respect of the
product.
The Philips product carries the following
warranties:
— C-series HiFi-systems 12 months.
- Compact Disc Players: 12 months.
- Home Audio Systems: 6 months.
— Clock radios, portable radios, cassette
recorders, cassette players and radio
recorders: 90 days.
Any defect in materials or workmanship
occurring within the specified period from the
date of delivery, will be rectified free of charge
by the retailer from whom this product was

This guarantee does not prejudice your rights
under common law and statute, and is in
addition to the normal responsibilities of the
retailer and Philips.
How to claim
Should your Philips product fail within the
guarantee period, please return it to the
retailer from whom it was purchased. In most
cases the retailer will be able to satisfactorily
repair or replace the product.
However, should the retailer not be able to
conclude the matter satisfactorily, or if you
have other difficulties claiming under this
guarantee, please contact.
