T
here are certainly more than a few DAWs out
there, and frankly, all of them produce the
same end result. Granted, some are better
equipped than others for some tasks, but they
can all edit and mix audio and MIDI effectively. So what
sets one DAW aside from the others? Quite simply, it
boils down to workflow. By its very nature, Pro Tools
already possesses an impressive set of tools that
make navigating through a session amazingly intuitive.
Pro Tools comes in two basic flavors — Pro Tools|HD
and Pro Tools LE/M-Powered — each with a specific
market in mind. With so many variations and options to
choose from, how do you know which one is right for
you? We’re going to show you.
Plenty of Horsepower
We’ll start at the top of the pile: Pro Tools|HD. The heart of any Pro
Tools|HD system — aside from the amazingly powerful audio/MIDI
software — is the HD Core card. A system with a single HD card is
known as Pro Tools|HD 1, and it will handle up to 32 channels of I/O
and guaranteed support for up to 96 simultaneous audio tracks, with
no stress on the computer. The HD Core card houses a host of powerful
DSPs that provide the dedicated mixing and processing horsepower
audio professionals have come to expect from Pro Tools. Expanding the
system’s dedicated processing power and I/O capacity is as easy as
adding additional HD Accel cards.

The next step is Pro Tools|HD 2 Accel. This system
includes the HD Core card and an HD Accel card,
offering more than four times the mixing and
processing power of HD 1 systems, support for 64
channels of I/O, plus guaranteed support for
up to 192 simultaneous audio tracks, again
with no stress on the computer.
The undisputed heavyweight champion
in the world of Pro Tools is Pro Tools|HD
Accel 3. The Pro Tools|HD Accel 3 system
features the HD Core card and two HD
Accel cards, supporting up to 96 channels
of I/O and guaranteeing support for up
to 192 simultaneous audio tracks, with
no stress on the computer. Of the three
core systems, this configuration offers
the most power and flexibility, enabling
you to complete projects more quickly and
efficiently than ever before. If this still isn’t
enough horsepower fro you, then you can add an Expansion Chassis,
which will maximize your Pro Tools|HD experience by adding more
Accel cards (up to seven cards are supported on a single HD system).
The more cards you have, the more onboard DSP you have access
to — there’s virtually no limit to what you can accomplish with a
maxed-out Pro Tools|HD system.
Aside from the staggering amount of simultaneous tracks available
in an HD system, Pro Tools|HD also offers a completely customizable
front end — you can choose the interface (or interfaces) that works
for you. From the 16 channels of hi-definition I/O provided by the 192
I/O and the 192 Digital I/O to the 8 channels of I/O of the 96 I/O, there’s
an HD interface that meets your studio’s needs. Also available is the
96i I/O, an interface that accommodates the connection of third-party
outboard gear — keyboards, samplers, effects, and other line-level
equipment — into your Pro Tools environment. Its 16

analog inputs provide balanced or unbalanced A/D conversion, using TRS
1/4" connectors. A S/PDIF port capable of 24-bit digital I/O allows you to
connect professional DAT recorders, CD players, and other digital recording devices. MIDI and synchronization devices along with an 8-channel
microphone preamp, are also available, to complete your HD rig.
Pro Tools for the Home Studio
For most of us working in home studios, native-based Pro Tools LE or
M-Powered will suffice (“native” is shorthand for a DAW system that
relies exclusively on the computer’s onboard processor and RAM for its
audio production power). Pro Tools LE is only compatible with approved
Digidesign interfaces, which fall into two distinct categories: the 003

familyy and the Mbox family.
Digidesign
003 Rack
Built with Bands in Mind
Pro Tools M-Powered is a version of Pro Tools that is
compatible with select M-Audio interfaces. The really
cool thing about this multiple-interface approach is
that there are presently nearly 30 M-Audio interfaces
that work with M-Powered, allowing you a wide variety
of options to choose from when selecting your front
end. This flexibility makes M-Powered one of the most
versatile — and accessible — versions of Pro Tools around.
The software remains largely the same between the different Pro Tools
platforms, with the only differences being minor and likely not significant
to most LE/M-Powered users. One feature enjoyed by Pro Tools|HD users
that would be a welcome addition to the native-based family of Pro Tools
is delay compensation. This allows you to perform common studio tasks,
such as using external processing on a track(s) without experiencing an
audible delay (which can cause the processed tracks to sound slightly out
of time with the other tracks). Other than that, the software performance
is nearly identical in both the HD and the LE/M-Powered versions. In
fact, one of the coolest features of Pro Tools software, especially in this
environment where home studios are so prevalent, is that any Pro Tools
session from any version of Pro Tools is compatible with any other version
— the transfer is seamless!
Whether your studio needs the amazing power of a DSP-accelerated
Pro Tools|HD rig; the convenient, streamlined I/O of the Mbox 2 family;
the flexibility of the M-Powered series, there’s a Pro Tools system that’s

M-Audio
ProjectMix I/O
Recording bands takes multiple mics, at least if you want to do it effectively. Drum kits alone frequently need at least three mics — sometimes
as many as seven or eight. Either way, a fair number of inputs are needed.
Any member of the 003 family can accommodate band recording, though
depending on the availability of outboard gear, some setups can do more
simultaneous tracks than others. The flagship of the 003 family is the 003
Factory. This combination of FireWire audio interface and control surface
provides four mic preamps, four +4/-10 line inputs, eight channels of
ADAT I/O, and S/PDIF. That’s 18 channels of I/O available simultaneously,
which is more than enough to handle band recording. The control surface
portion of the 003 gives you hands on control over your Pro Tools mixes
via eight faders, transport control, and other mixing essentials.
The 003 Rack and the Rack Factory offer the same I/O sans control
surface in a 2U rackmountable package. A more recent addition to the
003 family is the 003 Rack+ Factory, a unit that holds true to the 003
Rack form factor but adds four XLR inputs, simplifying the multi-mic
setup by eliminating the need for four channels of external
preamps. Any member of the 003 family is suitable for band-type
recording projects.
M-Audio

ideally suited for vocal/acoustic guitar-type setups. These devices
can also accommodate larger recording tasks, provided you take on these
projects in steps and overdub any additional tracks you may need.

The Mbox 2 family puts the power of Pro Tools in a portable form factor that’s perfect for desktop and mobile
