Before Playing
Inserting Batteries
Remove the battery compartment
cover on the bottom of the instrument
and insert six 1.5V SUM-2, “C” size,
or equivalent alkaline batteries (sold
separately), making sure that the
polarities are placed as directed inside
the compartment. Replace the cover,
ensuring that it locks securely in place.

Avant de jouer
Mise en place des piles
Enievez le couvercle du logement des
piles, situé sur le socie de lappareil
et insérez six piles SUM-2 de 1,5V,
de format C, ou des piles alcalines
équivalentes (non fournies), en ayant
soin de respecter les polarités indi-
quées dans le logement. Replacez le
couvercle en s'assurant qu'il se
verrouille bien en place.

Household current: Power Adaptor
PA-1 or PA-4 is available for household
current. No other adaptor is usable, so
when you purchase a power adaptor
please ensure that it is model PA-1
or PA-4.
Car Battery: Car Battery Adaptor CA-1
plugs into a car cigarette lighter socket.
For An Even Bigger Sound
Although you'll be happy with the
sound from the built-in speaker, you
can get an even more satisfying sound
if you connect the PortaSound to
a bigger speaker. Try using your stereo
system (see page 12).

Als Sonderzubehör erhältliche
Adapter
Für Netzbetrieb: Verwenden Sie stets
nur den im Handel erhältlichen Netz-
adapter PA-1 oder PA-4.
Betrieb an Autobatterie: Hierzu ist der
Batterieadapter CA-1 erforderlich. Er
kann direkt an die Zigarettenanziinder-
buchse des Wagens angeschlossen werden.
So klingt das Instrument noch besser...
Der eingebaute hochqualitative Laut-
sprecher garantiert bereits eine erstklassige
Klangreproduktion. Fiir ein noch
überwältigenderes Klangerlebnis kann ein
größerer Außenlautsprecher oder eine
Stereo-Anlage angeschlossen werden,
(Siehe hierzu auch Seite 12).

Vous serez certainement satisfait du
son du haut-parleur incorporé, mais
il est possible d’obtenir un son
encore meilleur si vous connectez le
PortaSound à un plus grand haut-
parleur. Essayez, par exemple, de ie
connecter à votre chaîne stéréo
(voir en page 12).

Extraiga la cubierta del compartimiento
de las pilas de la parte inferior del
instrumento e inserte seis pilas alcalinas
de 1,5V SUM-2, tamaño “C”” o equi-

Playing Back the
Demonstration
Music
The PSS-160 is programmed with
a demonstration music piece,
“Camptown Races”. To hear this
music, do the following.
1. Switch On
Slide the POWER switch (1> to the
“ON” position. The power-on light will
“illuminate.
e |f you forget to turn off the power
when you've finished using the
keyboard, a switch-off alarm warns
you after about two minutes,
thus preventing battery wastage.
2. Adjust the Volume
Slide the MASTER VOLUME contro! (>
about three-quarters of the way
towards MAX. to set the volume level.

Auf Wunsch spielt das PSS-160 jederzeit
das Stück ‘“Camptown Races’ vor.
Die folgenden Schritte sind hierzu
auszuführen.
1. Einschalten
Schieben Sie den POWER-Schalter (1)
auf ON. Die Einschalt-Anzeige leuchtet
dann auf.
® Wenn vergessen wurde, das Keyboard
nach der Verwendung auszuschalten,
ertónt nach ca. zwel Minuten ein
Warnsignal, Auf diese Weise wird ein
versehentliches Entladen der Batterien
verhindert.

Races” will be played.
e The music will be played auto-
matically and repeatediy.
e To stop the music, press the
START/STOP selector again.
e You can change the programmed
voice, rhythm and tempo as you like.

Select an instrument voice
You can choose any of ten voices by
sliding TONE SELECT {7 in the
ORCHESTRA section. Adjust the
volume using the MASTER VOLUME
control (2).

up to two notes can be played

e Delayed vibrato is built-in for the
Clarinet, Flute, Violin, Vibes,
Popsynth and Cosmic voices.
e Sustain is built-in for Vibes and
Cosmic.
B) Rhythm Section
1. Choose a rhythm
Pick the rhythm that best suits the
music you're going to play and slide
RHYTHM SELECT (6) to the appro-
priate position. -
2. Start the rhythm
After selecting a rhythm, press the
START/STOP selector (0.
e Use the SYNCHRO START selector
(9) if you want the rhythm to begin
from the moment you first press
a Key. The 14 keys (up to F*>)
beginning at the left of the keyboard
will activate the rhythm sounds.
e Bis zu vier Tone kónnen polyphon
gespielt werden. (Bei Verwendung der
Bal}-Akkord-Automatik können

1. Wahl des Rhythmus
Wahlen Sie einen zu Ihrer Musik
passenden Rhythmus durch Verschieben
des RHYTHM SELECT-Schalters (6).
e Un maximum de 4 notes peuvent
étre jouées en méme temps, sauf
quand Basses/Accords Automati-
ques est utilisé car, á ce moment,
vous ne pouvez jouer que deux
notes simultanément.
e La fonction de vibrato retardé
incorporée a été conçue pour la
Clarinette, la Flûte, le Violon, le
Vibraphone et les voix Popsynth
et Cosmic.

B) Section Rythmique
1. Sélectionnez un rythme

2. Start des Rhythmus
Nach der Rhythmuswahl driicken Sie
den START/STOP-Schalter 49.
® Um den Rhythmus automatisch beim
ersten Anschlagen einer Taste beginnen
zu lassen, driicken Sie den SYNCHRO
START-Schalter (9). Der Rhythmus
setzt dann ein, sobald eine der ersten
14 links am Keyboard liegenden
Tasten (bis zu F*,) angeschlagen wird.

2. Faites demarrer le rythme
Apres la selection du rythme, enfoncez

e Utilisez l'interrupteur de SYNCHRO
START (9) si vous souhaitez que le
rythme démarre dès que vous
enfoncez une touche. Les 14 touches
(jusqu’à F* >), à partir de la gauche du
clavier, activent les sons du rythme.
e Pueden tocarse hasta cuatro notas
al mismo tiempo excepto cuando se
usa el Acorde y Bajo Automático, con
el que se pueden tocar dos notas
al mismo tiempo.
e El vibrato retardado está incorporado
en las voces de Clarinete, Flauta,

2. Inicie el ritmo
Después de seleccionar un ritmo, pulse
el selector START/STOP ú9.
e Ultilice el selector SYNCHRO START
(9) si desea que el ritmo comience
desde el momento en que pulse la
primera tecla. Las 14 teclas (hasta F*z)
comenzando por la izquierda del
teclado, activaran los sonidos del ritmo.

To record a melody, first press the
RECORD/STOP selector 6 in the

Taking care of
your PortaSound
Your PortaSound will remain in
excellent playing condition if care is
taken concerning the following.
1. When you use AC power or a car
battery, be sure to use the optional
PortaSound adaptors. Before use,
read the adaptor instructions
carefully.
2. The optional car battery adaptor
is only for use with a negative
ground 12V battery. Ensure that
this is the case before connecting
the adaptor.
3. Connections made between the
PortaSound and any other device
should be made with both units
turned off.
4. Do not set the MASTER VOLUME
at MAX when you connect the
PortaSound to a stereo system.
Use the stereo system's volume
control to adjust the sound level.
5. Avoid placing the instrument in
excessively humid areas.
6. Do not subject the unit to physical
shock, and avoid placing anything
heavy on it.
7. The PortaSound should not be
placed in direct sunlight for a
long time.
8. Do not place the instrument near
any heating appliance, or leave
it inside a car in direct sunlight for
any length of time. Direct sunshine
can raise the interior temperature
of a car with closed doors and
windows to as high as 80°C (176°F).
