The DMS system uses the concept of service providers. The Broker manages the various providers. A provider is a software program that can perform a particular service for an Avid editing application. For example, a ProEncode provider runs on a system containing encoding software such as Anystream™
Agility™ Workgroup™. ProEncode uses the encoding software to transform media into different formats that are suitable for delivery on the Web, DVD, or
CD-ROM.
In a typical scenario, an Avid editor would send a sequence to the DMS
Broker using the File > DMS > ProEncode command. This tells the DMS
Broker that the editor wants to send the selected sequence to ProEncode.
The ProEncode provider accepts the job from the DMS Broker and passes the information about the sequence to the encoding software. The provider monitors the progress of the encoding operation and reports the progress to the
DMS Broker. When the job is complete, the ProEncode provider copies the new files to the proper location and notifies the DMS Broker that the job is complete. To monitor the job you can view the DMS Web page.
The DMS Broker matches jobs and their corresponding settings with suitable providers. The Broker is a repository of job and provider information. It allows individual providers to choose jobs that they are able to process according to the service for which they are configured.
The DMS Broker software should not reside on the same computer as an Avid editing application. The DMS Broker software may be installed on a provider system, depending on the workload of the particular computer.

Distributed Media Services
DMS Broker Window
The DMS Broker window displays current information about the status of the
Broker including the host name for the system on which the Broker resides.
The DMS Broker uses the host name to identify itself on the network.
DMS Administration Tool Software
The DMS Administration Tool is a Web-based application that is accessed through a browser. It communicates with the DMS Broker’s built-in Web server. This communication allows you to manage Distributed Media Services through a browser from anywhere using the Internet.
The DMS Broker and the DMS Administration Tool manage all Distributed
Media Services. The DMS Administration Tool performs two types of functions:
• Provides detailed information based on lists of jobs, encoders, profiles, and users
• Provides controls for managing and canceling jobs, deleting provider software, deleting profiles, and creating or deleting users
Distributed Media Services
Distributed Media Services (DMS) may be distributed to dedicated workstations in a networked environment, thereby freeing computer resources to perform other tasks.
The DMS services managed by the Broker include but are not limited to the following:
• Media Browse Integration Services
Proxy Transcode service
Create Proxy service
Nearchive Audio/Video Mixdown service
Video Render and Checkin
• ProEncode
• Avid DS Remote Processing

The Network Environment
Before installing DMS Broker software:
• Ensure the configuration conforms to the hardware, software, and network requirements listed in
“Configuration Requirements” on page 16
.
• Note which system in the network will serve as the DMS Broker, and which system(s) will serve as providers.
n
The DMS Broker is also a Web server on port 8080, so there may be a need to modify firewall rules to allow users to run the DMS Administration Tool.
• In an Avid Unity MediaNetwork environment, plan the workspaces that the editing application will use. These will be the client systems. The providers will also need access to these workspaces. Avid recommends mapping these workspaces as drives on both the editing application system and the providers, as described in the Avid Unity MediaNetwork
for Windows NT Clients Quick Start Card.
n
Do not install the DMS Broker on a system running an Avid editing application.
Installation of an Encoding Application
Anystream Agility and Telestream FlipFactory™ software are examples of encoding applications. They allow users and service providers to automate media encoding and transcoding of streaming, broadcast and production formats.
Prior to installing an encoding application, ensure each encoder has its own registered copy of the encoding application.
For information on installing encoding applications, see
.
n
The encoder software must be installed before setting up the DMS provider.

Email address (Option) Type your e-mail address if you select “Notify me of Job completion by email.” n
You can also check the DMS Broker application Jobs window to see the status of your job.
Media Browse Integration Services
NewsCutter and other Avid video editing applications work with high resolution video and Media Browse editors work with low resolution video.
The Media Browse Integration Services allow Avid video editors to easily create low resolution versions of their sequences and make them available to
Media Browse users. Media Browse users access the media for multiple purposes, such as story review, and for repurposing.
75
Chapter 6 Using DMS Services
In order to make a low resolution version of a master clip or sequence available to Media Browse, the media must has be transcoded into a low resolution format and the transcoded clip must be registered with
MediaManager. You can use the DMS Broker Media Browse Integration
Services to automatically perform these operations.
DMS Media Browse Integration Services include the following services:
•
•
Nearchive Audio/Video Mixdown Service
•
•
Video Render and Checkin Service
Each service has a corresponding provider that performs the operations. You can have multiple providers residing on different computers on your network.
For more information, see “DMS Broker Software” on page 14 .
n
An additional Media Browse Integration Service, Proxy Transcode, is used indirectly by several of the Media Browse Integration Services to create low resolution versions of media.
n
One service, Video Render and Checkin, does not create a low resolution version. It creates a version at the same resolution as the original sequence with rendered video tracks, mixed down video tracks, and unmodified audio tracks.
Create Proxy Service
The Create Proxy service allows an Avid video editor to create a low resolution version of a sequence or master clip and make it available to other newsroom users through Media Browse. These other users can review, add comments to, and even edit the low resolution version.
In the following example, assume that you want to make a low resolution version of a sequence or master clip available to Media Browse users in your newsroom environment.
76
Media Browse Integration Services
To create a low resolution version of a sequence or master clip:
1. (Option) In the Avid editing application, double-click DMS in the Settings scroll list of the Project window to check the DMS Broker connection.
The DMS Broker connection must be active before you can use any of the
Media Browse Integration Services. If necessary, establish the connection.
See
“Configuring a DMS Broker Client on an Avid Editing Application” on page 74
.
2. Select a sequence or master clip in a bin.
3. Select File > DMS > Create Proxy, or right-click the sequence and select

That’s all you have to do. The Avid editing application and the Media Browse
Integration service providers take over from here as described in the following section. If you have requested e-mail notification in your DMS settings dialog box, the system will send you e-mail when the job is complete.

If you don’t have a connection to a DMS Broker, the File > DMS menu command is not available.
n
If the Create Proxy service is not available, the job will sit in the DMS Broker
Job queue until the Create Proxy service is available.
How the Create Proxy Command Works
After you execute the File > DMS > Create Proxy command, the following operations occur automatically.
1. The Create Proxy provider instructs the Avid editing application to perform the following operations for sequences: a.
Render any unrendered effects on the sequence.
b.
Check the sequence into MediaManager.
c.
Create a copy of the sequence and append a .dms prefix to the sequence name; for example, mysequence.dms. This file does not appear in the bin.
d.
If any of the media files associated with the sequence are not on the
Avid Unity MediaNetwork, the Avid editing application consolidates the media to new master clips on Avid Unity MediaNetwork.
e.
Check the .dms sequence into MediaManager.
77
Chapter 6 Using DMS Services f.
Submit a Create Proxy job to the DMS Broker for the new .dms sequence.
The Create Proxy provider continually polls the DMS Broker for new jobs. When it determines that a job is available it accepts the job.
2. The Create Proxy provider performs the following operations for sequences: a.
Flattens the sequence, creating a new master clip in the process.
b.
Appends the prefix .flatten to the new master clip.
c.
Checks the .flatten master clip into MediaManager.
Now there is a flattened master clip at the same resolution as the original sequence. In this example, the master clip is named mysequence.dms.flatten.
The following operations occur for both sequences and master clips.
3. MediaManager notifies Media Browse that a new master clip is available for transcoding.
4. Media Browse submits a Transcode job request to the DMS Broker.
5. The Proxy Transcode provider polls the DMS Broker for new jobs. When it determines that a job is available it accepts the job and passes information on the flattened master clip to the Anystream application.
Anystream creates a low resolution MPEG version of the file.
6. The Proxy Transcode provider monitors the Anystream application while it processes the file. When the job is complete, the low resolution version is stored in the Media Browse database.
Now there are two versions of the master clip:
• A high resolution version on Avid Unity MediaNetwork that you can access using MediaManager.
• A low resolution version in the Media Browse database.
Media Browse users can review and edit the low resolution version.
To monitor the Create Proxy service:
t You can use the DMS Broker user interface to monitor the job.

Media Browse Integration Services
Nearchive Audio/Video Mixdown Service
The Nearchive Audio/Video Mixdown service allows an Avid video editor to perform the following tasks automatically:
• Store a master clip or a flattened version of a sequence on Nearchive.
The flattened version of a sequence is a new master clip that contains video and audio mixdowns of the original sequence. The flattened version contains one video track and a maximum of two audio tracks.
• Create a low resolution version of the master clip or flattened sequence and make it available for viewing on Media Browse.
For more information on Nearchive, see the Avid Nearchive Administrator’s
and User’s Guide.
In the following example, assume that you want to archive a sequence or master clip and make a low resolution version available to other people in your newsroom environment.
To use the Nearchive Audio/Video mixdown service:
1. (Option) In the Avid editing application, double-click DMS in the Settings scroll list of the Project window to check your DMS Broker connection.
The DMS Broker connection must be active before you can use any of the
Media Browse Integration Services. If necessary, establish the connection.
See
“Configuring a DMS Broker Client on an Avid Editing Application” on page 74
.
2. Select a sequence or master clip in a bin. The following illustration shows the master clip and sequence icons in a bin.

79
Chapter 6 Using DMS Services
3. Select File > DMS > Nearchive Audio/Video Mixdown or right-click the sequence and select DMS > Nearchive Audio/Video Mixdown.
That’s all you have to do. The Avid editing application, DMS Broker, and the
Media Browse Integration service providers take over from here as described in the following section. If you have requested e-mail notification in your
DMS settings dialog box, the system will send you e-mail when the job is complete.
n
If you don’t have a connection to a DMS Broker, the File > DMS menu command is not available.
n
If the Nearchive Audio/Video Mixdown service is not available the job will sit in the DMS Broker Job queue until the service is available.
How the Nearchive Audio/Video Mixdown Command Works
After you execute the File > DMS > Nearchive Audio/Video Mixdown command, the following operations occur automatically.
1. The Nearchive Audio/Video Mixdown provider instructs the Avid editing application to perform the following operations for sequences: a.
Render any unrendered effects on the sequence.
b.
Check the sequence into MediaManager.
c.
Create a copy of the sequence and append a .dms prefix to the sequence name; for example, mysequence.dms. This file does not appear in the bin.
d.
If any of the media files associated with the sequence are not on the
Avid Unity MediaNetwork, the Avid editing application consolidates the media to new master clips on Avid Unity MediaNetwork.
e.
Check the .dms sequence into MediaManager. f.
Submit a Nearchive Audio/Video Mixdown job to the DMS Broker for the new .dms sequence.
The Nearchive Audio/Video Mixdown provider continually polls the
DMS Broker for new jobs. When it determines that a job is available, it accepts the job.
80
Media Browse Integration Services
2. The Nearchive Audio/Video Mixdown provider performs the following operations for sequences: a.
Flatten the sequence, creating a new master clip in the process. This is similar to performing video and audio mixdowns of the sequence. The flattened master clip contains one video track and a maximum of two audio tracks.
b.
Append the prefix .flatten to the new master clip.
c.
Check the .flatten master clip into MediaManager.
Now there is a flattened master clip at the same resolution as the original sequence. In this example, the master clip is named mysequence.dms.flatten.
The following occur for both sequences and master clips:
7. The Anystream application writes the new low resolution file to a Media
Browse shared drive.
8. The Nearchive provider instructs TransferManager to transfer the high resolution version to the Nearchive system.
Now there are three versions of the master clip:
• A high resolution version in the Nearchive system
• A high resolution version on Avid Unity MediaNetwork
• A low resolution version in the Media Browse database
Media Browse users can review and edit the low resolution version. You can also use Media Browse to retrieve the high resolution version from Nearchive.
To monitor the Nearchive Audio/Video Mixdown service:
t You can use the DMS Broker user interface to monitor the job.

Chapter 6 Using DMS Services
Send to Playback Service
In a newsroom environment, you can use the Send to Playback command to transfer a finished sequence to a configured playback device. In order to have access to the Send to Playback command, you must be part of a workgroup environment and have TransferManager running.
If your workgroup is configured with DMS Broker and Media Browse
Integration Services, every time you send a sequence to a playback device the system automatically creates a low resolution version of the sequence that can be viewed on Media Browse.
To use the Send to Playback service:
1. (Option) In the Avid editing application, double-click DMS in the Settings scroll list of the Project window to check the DMS Broker connection.
The DMS Broker connection must be active before you can use any of the
Media Browse Integration Services. If necessary, establish the connection.
See
“Configuring a DMS Broker Client on an Avid Editing Application” on page 74
.
2. Select a sequence in a bin. (You cannot perform the Send to Playback operation on a master clip.)
3. Select Transfer > Send to Playback and select a playback device from the submenu.
n
The Transfer menu is only available when TransferManager is running.
That’s all you have to do. The Avid editing application, TransferManager,
DMS Broker, and Media Browse Integration service providers take over from here.
The process of creating the low resolution clip is similar to the way that the
Create Proxy provider works on sequences.
Video Render and Checkin Service
This service allows you to automatically perform the following tasks:
• Render any video effects in the sequence (audio effects are not rendered)
• Make a copy of the sequence and check it into MediaManager
82
Media Browse Integration Services
To use the Video Render and Checkin service:

2. Select a sequence in a bin.
3. Select File > DMS > Video Render and Checkin, or right-click the sequence and select DMS > Video Render and Checkin.
That’s all you have to do. The Avid editing application and the Media Browse
Integration service providers take over from here as described in the following section. If you have requested e-mail notification in your DMS settings dialog box, the system will send you e-mail when the job is complete.
How the Video Render and Checkin Command Works
After you execute the File > DMS > Video Render and Checkin command, the following operations occur automatically.
1. The Video Render and Checkin provider instructs the Avid editing application to perform the following operations: a.
Render any unrendered video effects on the sequence. Audio effects are not modified.
Now there is a new sequence at the same resolution as the original sequence. The sequence has rendered video effects, and the audio tracks have not been modified. In this example, the sequence is named mysequence.dms.
n
The sequence is not flattened (mixed down) when using this service.

Chapter 6 Using DMS Services
Avid DS Remote Processing Service
Processing, or rendering, is a normal and necessary part of the Avid DS Nitris workflow, as with any system that handles complex compositing and effects.
Instead of waiting for Avid DS Nitris to process your effects, you can send a processing job to a remote workstation that is running Avid DS Remote
Processing (RP) and continue working on your sequence.
You can install the remote processing software on any number of workstations in your workgroup. The DMS Broker will automatically route your processing jobs to the first available RP workstation.
Avid DS RP renders the effects, returns the cache media to the Avid DS Nitris client storages, and notifies the client workstation when the job is complete.
When installing Avid DS Nitris on your workstations, you can specify where the caches will be stored, either on a shared storage device (within an Avid
Unity MediaNetwork) or on your local workstation.
You can set up your Avid DS Nitris workstation so that when a job returns from the remote processing station, you receive an e-mail informing you that the job is complete. The caches generated from the processing are automatically linked back to your current project.
Installing and Configuring the Avid DS RP Software
For details on installing and configuring the Avid DS RP software, see the
Avid DS Nitris Installation and Administration Guide.

Chapter 7 Using ProEncode
ProEncode Overview
Today’s production houses face an increasing demand for translating media into formats suitable for distribution via the Web, DVD, or CD-ROM — often at the same time. ProEncode software automates this computing-intensive process and lets you move the encoding operation to dedicated workstations.
These workstations, connected in a network and working simultaneously, serve as your “encoding farm.” Distributing the encoding frees the editing workstations to perform other tasks.
You can use DMS and ProEncode to send a sequence from your video editing system to multiple encoding workstations, which then simultaneously create a
QuickTime movie, an MPEG-2 movie, and any other formats available from the encoding application. While these workstations are encoding, you can work on your next video editing sequence.
You can use ProEncode in an Avid Unity MediaNetwork environment, where the editing station and the encoding stations are connected in a Fibre Channel network. ProEncode is also supported as a PortServer Pro client.
PortServer Pro client functionality is achieved by connecting the ProEncode provider to an Avid Unity PortServer Pro workgroup. This allows you to access, through the PortServer Pro, workspaces in an Avid Unity
MediaNetwork workgroup and take advantage of the file-sharing capabilities, system scalability, and flexibility offered by PortServer Pro and
MediaNetwork workgroup architectures.
ProEncode System Configuration
You can install a ProEncode provider and the encoder software on the same computer as DMS Broker or you can set up separate encoding systems, each with their own encoding application. The following illustration shows the two basic configurations for using ProEncode and the DMS Broker.
In both configurations the ProEncode clients are on the Avid editing systems.
Those systems are on the Avid Unity MediaNetwork system, which is accessed via Fibre Channel or the PortServer Pro system. Notice that in the bottom illustration, the DMS Broker system can be connected via 10/100BT
Ethernet because the system does not have to access media.

n
If you need information on setting up Domain names (DNS names) on your
system, see “Additional Installation and Configuration Information” on page 112
.
Setting up a Standalone ProEncode Client
You usually configure a ProEncode client to be used from within an Avid editing application. However, you can configure a standalone client as well. In this scenario you would export QuickTime Reference movies from your Avid editing application and then use the standalone client to process them at a later time. To set up a standalone client, install the software on the client system and use the procedure described in
“Adding a File to ProEncode” on page 97
.
Configuring a DMS Broker Client on an Avid Editing Application
The ProEncode Client installation program enables access to a ProEncode
Client applet that is hosted by the DMS Broker. An applet is a Java application that only runs in a browser window. The ProEncode Client applet uses the settings from the DMS Settings dialog box in your Avid editing application
Settings scroll list. The applet can run independently from the Avid editing system.
ProEncode Client software includes optional settings that you can specify according to your work needs. If necessary, you can override these optional settings in the Add Jobs dialog box (see
“Sending a Clip or Sequence to
ProEncode from an Avid Editing Application” on page 92 ).
89
Chapter 7 Using ProEncode

Description
Type the directory on the Avid Unity MediaNetwork where you intend to save the QuickTime reference movie. You can click the Browse button to locate the directory.
In an Avid Unity MediaNetwork environment, this folder needs to be in a workspace that the encoders can access.
This will also be the default location for the encoded output file from the encoding application if you do not define a different destination path within the
ProEncode Client.
n
You may find it convenient to create a separate folder for each
ProEncode client. That will make it easy for each Avid editor to locate their processed movies.
n
You may want to create a dedicated workspace on you Avid Unity shared storage system for these QuickTime Reference movies. This makes it easier to delete the files when necessary.
(Option) If you select “Notify me of Job completion by email,” type your e-mail address.
Encoding a Clip or a Sequence
There are two methods for encoding a clip or sequence:
• Select the clip or sequence within an Avid editing application, and send it
to ProEncode. See “Sending a Clip or Sequence to ProEncode from an
Avid Editing Application” on page 92
.
• Export a QuickTime Reference movie or any other file that the encoding
application can process, and add it to ProEncode. See “Adding a File to
.
Sharing Folders in an Avid Unity MediaNetwork Environment
When working in an Avid Unity MediaNetwork environment, the media for the clip or sequence that you are encoding needs to be on a mounted
MediaNetwork workspace. This workspace needs to be shared by the client and the encoder. Media that is on a local drive cannot be used. A shared workspace must be specified for the DMS Settings Shared folder and the
91
Chapter 7 Using ProEncode
Destination folder in the ProEncode Add Jobs dialog box. For more information, see the Avid Unity MediaNetwork Setup Guide and Avid Unity
MediaNetwork for Windows NT Clients Quick Start Card.
Sending a Clip or Sequence to ProEncode from an Avid Editing
Application
To send a clip or sequence to ProEncode:
1. Check the following:
Make sure the DMS Broker is running. See
Broker Client on an Avid Editing Application” on page 89 .
Make sure the ProEncode provider software is running on the encoders system that you want to use.
n
You can submit jobs to the Broker even if no encoders are available. The
Broker will assign the jobs when one or more encoders become available.
However, you will not be able to select a specific provider.
2. In your Avid editing application, select the clip or sequence in one of the following ways: t Click the clip or sequence in a bin.
t Click in the Timeline.
t Click the monitor that displays the clip or sequence you want to export.
n
ProEncode export does not recognize IN and OUT points in the sequence.
3. Select File > DMS > ProEncode.
The Add Jobs dialog box opens.
92
Encoding a Clip or a Sequence
Profiles list n
When you send a job from an Avid editing application through DMS, the
Source field will be grayed out because the DMS Broker takes the clip or sequence name and path from the source area you specify in the DMS Settings dialog box and from the Export dialog box.(The Export dialog box appears at the end of this procedure.)
The Destination text box contains the shared storage location that you specified in the DMS Settings dialog box. This identifies the folder that will hold the encoded movie. n
You may find it useful to create a separate folder for each ProEncode client to make it easier to keep track of the movies each editor creates.
93
Chapter 7 Using ProEncode
4. Select the following parameters for the job: a.
Select a setting from the Settings list.
This list includes all encoding application settings that have been registered with the Broker, organized by folder. Double-click the
Folder icon to view the individual settings within the folder.
Each setting is preceded by a colored Signal icon as described in the following table.
Color
Green
Amber
Red
Meaning
A provider that can use this setting is online.
At least one provider can use this setting, but it is not online. You can submit a job, which will be processed when a provider that can use the setting becomes available.
No registered provider can use this setting. This situation might occur if you create a custom setting on a provider and then delete the provider. You can use the DMS Administration Tool to delete the setting.
Click Browse if you want to find and select a setting that is not currently registered with the Broker. For example, if you created a custom setting by using Anystream Agility Workgroup on the client, you can send that setting file along with the job to a particular encoder.
n
For a description of the settings that are available with your system, see the
Anystream Agility Workgroup or Telestream FlipFactory documentation.
b.
Click the Priority pop-up menu, and select a priority for this job.
If there are multiple jobs, the priority determines which jobs are processed first.
c.
(Option) Click the Provider pop-up menu, and select a specific
ProEncode provider for this job.
Selecting a provider might be necessary if you are sending a custom setting with the job. You can also use this setting to override whatever assignment the Broker would have made.
5. After you have selected the parameters, click Add To Batch.
94
Encoding a Clip or a Sequence
The job is added to the current batch. You can now add another job to the batch. In most cases, you would use the same QuickTime reference movie with different profile parameters.
6. After you have added all jobs to your batch, click Close.
The Add Jobs dialog box closes, and the jobs are shown in the ProEncode
Client window, along with information about each job.
n
When you send a job from an Avid editing application through DMS, the Batch name is not available and the Notification button is grayed out. The DMS
Broker uses any notification information that you entered in the DMS setting dialog box.
7. If you want to delete or change a job, select the job and click Remove Job.
You can then add the job again, using new parameters.
8. Click OK.
9. Click Submit.
The Export of file for DMS Job window dialog box appears.
95
Chapter 7 Using ProEncode
96
This dialog box is provided solely to give you the opportunity to change the file name before you submit the job. The Option button works but the options are disabled at this point.
c
Do not change the pathname in the Export dialog box. Only use this dialog box to change the file name.
10. (Option) Change the name of the file if necessary.
11. Click Save.
The Avid editing system processes the sequence by rendering any unrendered effects, creating files for audio media, and creating a QuickTime reference movie that points to video and audio media.
The Client sends information about all jobs in the batch to the Broker, which in turn assigns each job to a provider. The provider starts the encoding application, which processes the job. The provider then sends information about the job to the DMS Broker. If you have chosen to receive a notification in the DMS Settings dialog box, the Broker sends a message to the Client.
Encoding a Clip or a Sequence
Adding a File to ProEncode
You can use ProEncode to manage the encoding of any video or audio format that the encoding application can process, such as QuickTime, AVI, or
AIFF-C.
To create a QuickTime Reference movie:

see “Sharing Folders in an Avid Unity MediaNetwork Environment” on page 91 .
2. You use the DMS Broker to process the encoding request. Enter the following text in your browser window, using the DMS Broker name that you are connected to: http://<DMS Broker name>:8080/services/com.avid.dms.dmes/
ProencodeApplet.html
For example, if the DMS Broker’s name is bpdms, use the following URL: http://bpdms:8080/services/com.avid.dms.dmes/ProencodeApplet.html
The Add Jobs dialog box opens.
n
Once you successfully connect to the ProEncode applet, you can create a shortcut by dragging the Address icon in the browser window to your desktop.
97
Chapter 7 Using ProEncode
3. Type the path of the source file in the Source text box, or click Browse and navigate to the file.
4. Type the path of the Destination folder in the Destination text box, or click
Browse and navigate to the file.
5. Enter the remainder of the options for the Add Jobs dialog box as described in
“Sending a Clip or Sequence to ProEncode from an Avid
Editing Application” on page 92 .
6. After you have selected the parameters, click Add to Batch. You can now add another job to the batch. In most cases you would use the same
QuickTime Reference movie with different profile settings.
7. After you have added all the jobs to your batch, click Close.
The Add Jobs dialog box closes, and the jobs are shown in the ProEncode
Client window. All the options for the ProEncode Client window are described in
“Sending a Clip or Sequence to ProEncode from an Avid
Editing Application” on page 92 with the exception of the following
options: a.
Type a name in the Batch Name text box.
A batch name identifies the group of jobs for notification. The batch name appears in any notification message sent by the Broker. Jobs are not identified by batch in the DMS Administration Tool.
You can set a default batch name in the Client Settings dialog box (see
“Configuring a DMS Broker Client on an Avid Editing Application” on page 89
). If you don’t name the batch, the DMS Administrator monitors the batch by using an internally generated job ID. b.
(Option) If you want to be notified about the failure or completion of the jobs in this batch, click Notification.
The Notification Settings dialog box opens.
Select the notification options you want. If you do not want to receive notification, do not select either option.
8. Click OK.
9. Click Submit.
The ProEncode Client window closes and the Connect to DMS Broker dialog box appears.
10. Type your DMS Broker user name and password, and click OK.
98
Monitoring the Encoding
The Client sends information about all jobs in the batch to the Broker, which in turn assigns each job to a provider. The provider starts the encoding application, which processes the job. The provider then sends information about the job to the DMS Broker. If you have chosen to receive a notification, the Broker sends a message to the Client.
Monitoring the Encoding
After you submit the batch to be encoded, you can monitor the jobs by using the following:
•
DMS Administration Tool: The DMS Administration Tool gives you the most information for monitoring and managing jobs. For complete information, see
.
•
DMS Broker and ProEncode provider windows: Each window includes a Status line and a History window. The History window includes information that you can use for troubleshooting.

Telestream FlipFactory
Telestream FlipFactory
Telestream FlipFactory works as an encoder in a similar way to Anystream
Agility Workgroup. FlipFactory allows users and service providers to automate media encoding and transcoding of streaming, broadcast, and production formats.
For more information on FlipFactory, see the Telestream Web site: www.telestream.net
You must install TeleStream FlipFactory on each encoder system. Each encoder needs its own registered copy of TeleStream FlipFactory.

General Troubleshooting Procedure
General Troubleshooting Procedure
If you have checked
“Finding Solutions for Specific Problems” on page 108
and cannot solve your problem, use the following procedure to isolate the problem.
To isolate a ProEncode problem:
1. On a provider system, open the QuickTime reference file created by the
Avid editing system.
If you can view the movie, go to step 2.
If you cannot view the movie, go to step 3.
2. Submit the job through the ProEncode Client applet. Use the procedure described in
“Adding a File to ProEncode” on page 97
.
If the job encodes correctly, submit another job by selecting
File > DMS > ProEncode in the editing application. Occasionally, problems involving network updating are corrected after a short time.
3. Make sure all media drives are correctly shared: a.
Start your Avid editing application.
b.
In the Project window, click the Settings tab.
The Settings scroll list appears.
c.
Double-click DMS.
The DMS Settings dialog box opens.
d.
In the Shared Storage text box, make sure the path includes a shared folder.
In an Avid Unity MediaNetwork environment, this folder needs to be in a workspace that the encoders can access.
e.
Click OK.
f.
If this setting is correct, check that all files referenced by the
QuickTime reference movie are on shared directories.
4. If a problem still exists, it might be network-related. Have your network administrator verify the TCP/IP addresses, DNS tables, and other network functions. For information on DNS, see
.
111
Appendix B Troubleshooting the DMS Broker and DMS Services
Checking the User Information File
User information is stored in the DMS.user.table file. By default, this file is located in the following location:
drive:\Program Files\Avid\DMS\Broker\store\DMS.users.table
Consider making a backup copy of this file in case you need to restore it.
Checking the Log File
You can also check the log file, which is located on the system running the
Broker or provider. The log folder is located in the path that you selected during installation, for example:
drive:\Program Files\Avid\DMS\Broker\log n
This only applies when using the non-SQL installation of DMS.
Additional Installation and Configuration
Information
The following sections supply additional installation and configuration information.
Name Resolution
A Domain Name System (DNS) maps machine names to Internet addresses.
Use the HOSTS file or create a HOSTS file if there is no DNS on your network. It is also convenient to place frequently used name-to-address mappings in this file.
n
Each host on your network that uses HOSTS file services must have the file resident on the disk. Each client and server should be added to the HOSTS file so that every computer can see every other computer by name.
112
Additional Installation and Configuration Information
The syntax of the HOSTS file is:
<name> <type> <data> [<comment>]
name is the name assigned to a host or domain on the Internet. n
If you do not have a valid domain name, enter a fake domain name.
• type is A (address) or CNAME (canonical name).
• data is determined by the type specified:
If type = A, the data field contains an Internet address.
If type = CNAME, the data field contains the alias name for an
Internet address.
• comment allows you to add a comment to the entry. n
Any combination of tabs and spaces can be used as a delimiter between each item in a line. Lines end with the return and linefeed characters.
CNAME entries are not required. They may make it easier to access an
Internet address by using more common names.
Example Entries in a HOSTS File (Windows)
<IP Address> <name1> <name2> <nameN> [# <comment>]
The IP Address is in the period-delimited format, and spaces separate the name fields as in the following example:
192.102.73.6 mycomputer1.xco.com mycomputer1 fred #system in the front office
Updating the HOSTS File
(Windows)
Microsoft TCP/IP can be configured to search the local host table file,
HOSTS, for mappings of remote host names to IP addresses. For example, the entry for a computer with an address of 192.102.73.6 and a host name of mycomputer1.xco.com looks similar to this:
192.102.73.6 mycomputer1.xco.com
113
Appendix B Troubleshooting the DMS Broker and DMS Services
Edit the sample HOSTS file that is created when you install TCP/IP to include remote host names and their IP addresses for each computer with which you will communicate. This sample file also explains the syntax of the HOSTS file.
A host name always corresponds to an IP address that is stored in a HOSTS file or a name service such as DNS. A host name can be used in place of an IP address when using ping or other TCP/IP utilities.
A single entry consists of an IP address corresponding to one or more host names.
n
You will want to perform this procedure only if you do not have a DNS on your network.
To access the HOSTS file:
1. Double-click the WINNT folder.
2. Double-click the SYSTEM32 folder.
3. Double-click the DRIVERS folder.
4. Double-click the ETC folder.
5. Double-click the HOSTS file.
6. Make the necessary changes to the HOSTS file.
For example, to connect to the mycomputer1.xco.com at the IP address
192.102.73.6, make the entry in the HOSTS file:
192.102.73.6 mycomputer1.xco.com
n
You can edit the HOSTS file with any word processor as long as you save it as
Text Only without formatting commands. Make sure the HOSTS file does not have a file name extension (such as .txt). The HOSTS file will not work if there is a file name extension.
