Description
These enhancements to the Magstar 3590 Model A60
Controller increase the connectivity and attachment options over the predecessor 3590 Model A50 and A00
Controllers.
Included in these enhancements are the following:
•
Support for up to eight ESCON channel attachments
•
Adjacent frame attachment of Magstar 3590 Tape
Drives in one 3494 Tape Library frame to a Model A60
Controller in an adjacent frame
•
“Call Home” service support
Eight ESCON Channel Attachment Support
The initial announcement of the 3590 Model A60
Controller included support for one or two dual-ported
ESCON channel attachment features, providing attachment to two or four host ESCON channels. Now you can have one to four dual-ported ESCON channel attachment features, providing up to eight ESCON channel attachments, which is four times the attachment capability of the 3590 Model A50 Controller.
Each channel can have up to 64 logical channels and it supports multiple logical paths per MVS
image.
Adjacent Frame Support
The Adjacent Frame Support features on the Magstar
3494 Tape Library allow Magstar 3590 Tape Drives in a
3494 Model D12, L12, or L14 frame to attach to a 3490
Model A60 Controller in an adjacent 3494 Model D14
Drive Unit frame.
Up to ten 3590 Tape Drives can be attached to a single Model A60 Controller.
New 3494
Model D12 or L12 frames can be ordered from IBM with feature number 9062 (Adjacent Frame Drives — Plant) to attach to a 3590 Model A60 Controller in a new or installed 3494 Model D14 frame.
Feature number 4060
(Adjacent Frame Support) must be ordered on the
Model D14.
Tape drives in installed 3494 Model D12,
L12, and L14 frames will also be able to attach to a 3590
Model A60 Controller in a new or installed 3494
Model D14 frame by ordering feature numbers 4062
(Adjacent Frame Drives — Field).
With Adjacent Frame
Support, all the Magstar 3590 Tape Drives in the 3494
Model L14, L12, or D12 must be attached to a 3590
Model A60 Controller in an adjacent 3494 Model D14 frame.
Any 3590 Model A50 or A00 Controller in a
Model L14 is no longer available for use. The expanded attachment available with the 3590 Model A60 in a 3494
Tape Library makes it a very cost effective solution compared to other ESCON solutions.
“
Call Home
”
The “Call Home” function automatically opens a service alert when a problem occurs with the Magstar 3590
Model A60 or A50 Controller.
A service representative can be sent to the installation and status information can be transmitted to the Support Center for problem evaluation. In addition, “Call Home” allows these alerts to be sent to a pager service so that multiple people, including the customer, can be notified. This function is implemented with no new hardware, utilizing the Remote
Support Feature 2710, 2711, or 2712 already installed.
The service representative can activate this function at the installation of the 3590 Model A60 or A50, and service menus can be used to activate or deactivate this function.
“Call Home” is supported on the 3590 Model A60 and A50 in stand-alone, Silo, and 3494 Tape Library solutions. As an added benefit, in the 3494 environment, you can initiate the “Call Home” process via the 3494 library manager operator panel.
Year 2000
This product does not have date dependencies and is therefore Year 2000 ready.

Product Positioning
IBM provides the Magstar 3590 in a range of product offerings to meet a diverse set of customer requirements.
The Magstar 3590 Model A60 Controller was developed to exploit the higher performance of the Magstar 3590 E
Model Tape Drives and to provide the technology platform for future tape controller enhancements such as this announcement. The 3590 Model A60 Controller can be used in the following offerings:
•
IBM 3494 Automated Library (in a 3494 Model D14)
•
StorageTek Libraries (in a 3590 C10)
•
Stand-alone (in a 3590 A14 and standard 19-inch rack)
Magstar 3590
The IBM Magstar 3590 Tape Subsystem, attached to the
IBM 3590 Model A60 Controller, provides attachment of
IBM
′ s highest performance, large capacity tape subsystem to ESCON channels.
It should be the tape subsystem of choice in any ESCON environment on
ES/3090, ES/9000, or S/390 systems where a reliable, affordable, fast tape data rate or high capacity is needed.
The Magstar 3590 offers significant enhancements in performance, capacity, data integrity, reliability, and availability over IBM 3480, 3490, or 3490E tape drives.
The Magstar 3590 may also relieve backup time and space constraints and provide the increased capacity needed to support today
′ s growing disk backup requirements.
Although the 3590 provides the capability of very high tape performance, other components of the system may limit the actual performance achieved.
Magstar 3590 in a 3494
The Magstar 3590 offers the greatest performance and capacity for use in the IBM 3494.
One to four Magstar
3590 Model B1A Tape drives or one to four Magstar 3590
Model E1A Tape drives can be installed in each 3494
Model D14 with a 3590 Model A60 Controller.
A
Model A60 in a 3494 Model D14 Drive Unit frame with four Magstar 3590 Tape Drives and Adjacent Frame
Support can attach to drives in an adjacent 3494
Model L12 or L14 frame, thereby attaching up to a total of six Magstar 3590 Tape Drives. Or a Model A60 in a
3494 Model D14 Drive Unit frame with four 3590 Tape
Drives can attach to drives in an adjacent 3494
Model D12 frame, thereby attaching up to a total of ten tape drives.
Magstar Virtual Tape Server managed
Magstar 3590s, Magstar 3590 drives, Magstar 3590
Model A00, Magstar 3590 Model A50, Magstar 3590
Model A60, and 3490E drives can all be intermixed within a Magstar 3494 Tape Library.
100-049 -2-
3590 Silo Compatible Tape Subsystem
The Magstar 3590 can be used with StorageTek 4410 and
9310 using Magstar 3590 Model B1A or E1A Tape Drives, a Magstar 3590 C12/C14 Frame, and 3590 Model A50 or
A60 Controllers. One or two 3590 Model A60 Controllers in a 3590 Model C10 Silo Compatible Frame are attached to one to four 3590 Tape Drives in a 3590 Model C12 or
C14 Silo Compatible Frame.
The “3490E” emulation provided by the 3590 Model A50 or A60 can be used for attachment of the Magstar 3590 Tape Drives in a
StorageTek automated library to ES/3090, ES/9000, or
S/390 systems.
This provides the Magstar benefits of increased capacity, reliability, and performance over
18/36-track technology in an affordable offering to
StorageTek tape library users.
The Magstar 3590 Silo
Compatible Frame (Model C12 or C14) also offers a migration path to an IBM automation solution consisting of IBM automation, 3590 and 3490 drive technology, IBM
DFSMS , and where appropriate a Magstar Virtual Tape
Server. Integration of Magstar 3590 drive technology in
StorageTek libraries allows you to immediately benefit from Magstar 3590 technology, while planning a migration
(at your own pace) to a total IBM solution.
Moving Magstar 3590 to Different Storage Solutions
Magstar 3590 offers configuration flexibility and long range customer investment protection in its unique ability to be used, and re-used, in multiple storage solutions.
Capitalizing on IBM
′ s Seascape
architecture, Magstar
3590 Tape Drives are storage assets that can be moved from storage solution to storage solution.
Through features and model conversions, Magstar 3590 Tape
Drives can be transformed to fit into stand-alone subsystems (Model A14 or standard racks), StorageTek silos, or IBM 3494 automated solutions (including Magstar
Virtual Tape Server). An initial investment in the Magstar
3590 Tape Drive can now grow with your ever changing business requirements.
