NetIQ 4.3 Access Manager Developer Guide

Access Manager 4.3 is a security management software that helps developers design a flexible and expandable access management system. This software enables applications to interact with the identity management capabilities of Access Manager, including federation, provisioning, and the secure delivery of identity information (user name and password, and X.509 certificates) to client-based applications.

Key features

  • Leverage the identity management and policy capabilities of the product.

  • Provide access to various product features, including Liberty-based federated identity, secure credential exchange, user provisioning services, authentication and authorization methods and policies, and SAML assertion generation and processing.

  • Supports numerous ways for users to authenticate, including name/password, RADIUS token-based authentication, and X.509 digital certificates.

  • Allows developers to create a custom authentication class that can be plugged in to the Access Manager system.

  • Provides a programming interface that allows developers to leverage their own authentication mechanisms within the Access Manager architecture.

  • Provides an API that can be used to retrieve and manage authentication credentials.

  • Enables the creation of an authentication class that can define additional ways of obtaining and validating end-user credentials.

Frequently asked questions

You need to have Access Manager installed and your development environment should have the same installation as outlined in the NetIQ Access Manager 4.3 Installation and Upgrade Guide. You also need to copy the nidp.jar and NAMCommon.jar files from the Identity Server's /opt/novell/nam/idp/webapps/nidp/WEB-INF/lib directory (for Linux) or C:\Program Files (x86)\Novell\Tomcat\webapps\nidp\WEB-INF\lib directory (for Windows) to your development project.

Access Manager supports various authentication types, including basic authentication over HTTP and HTTPS, form-based authentication using a name and password over HTTP and HTTPS, authentication using an X.509 certificate, token-based authentication, smart-card-based authentication, and multiple authentication methods using a smart card.

The doAuthenticate() method is called by Identity Server during authentication. It takes the user's credentials and attempts to verify them against the specified user stores. If the credentials are valid, the method returns the user's DN (or other information specified by the method) and allows user access.

You can localize the prompts in your authentication class by creating a properties file, a resource class, and modifying the appropriate JSP page. The properties file contains the localized prompts, the resource class loads the prompts from the properties file, and the JSP page displays the prompts from the resource class.

After you have created your custom authentication class, you need to deploy it to the Identity Server. This involves copying the class file to the Identity Server's class path and configuring the authentication class in Administration Console.

Identity Server supports these authentication types: BASIC, PASSWORD, PROTECTED_BASIC, PROTECTED_PASSWORD, X509, TOKEN, SMARTCARD, SMARTCARDPKI, and OTHER. The OTHER type is used for all other types not defined above.
