OUTBOARD MOTOR MOUNTING on BOATS
It has come to our attention that some dealers are installing large horsepower Mercury Outboards
on boats and using only two of the specified four (4) clamp bracket mounting bolts.
There is a warning tag attached t o each Mercury Outboard, as shown in illustrations below. Read
them carefully and adhere t o the requirements. Mounting stipulations also are outlined under
“Motor Installation” in “Operation and Maintenance Manuals” and in the “Outboard Service
Manual”.
FAILURE TO BOLT MOTOR to TRANSOM MAY RESULT in
DAMAGE to BOAT, LOSS of MOTOR and POSSIBLE INJURY to
OCCUPANTS of BOAT.

INSTALLING MOTOR on BOAT
Before operating. this outboard must be bolmd to
the boat transom as indicated in sketch, below
Carriage bolts must extend thru bottom end of
holes at lower end of clamp bracket Upper bolts
must be installed on all &cylinder models (and on 3
and 4cylinder models. if transom has a hard,
smooth surface or if used for severe service) Merc
200 Outboards must be secured to boat with 2
bolts placed thru
tranwm into slots
provided a t bottom
of clamp bracket
On smaller horwpower models, it i s
advisable to bolt Tran
motor to transom as NU
described above.

The statement, “DEALER DO NOT REMOVE THIS TAG”, is distinct at the top on both sides of
the tag, and it should not be removed by anyone but the retail purchaser. It is a warning for both
you (the dealer) and the customer t o be sure that the motor is bolted properly on the transom.
Also, it is important that the customer should. . . “See additional instructions in your ‘Operation
and Maintenance Manual’ which accompanies your Mercury Outboard Motor”. This will alert
him/her to the various “Warnings” and “Cautions” and instructions in the manual.
