PRECAUTIONS I
elf the set is not used for a long period of time or is
used only from an AC mains supply, remove all the
batteries to prevent potential damage due to possible
battery leakage.
* Avoid using or placing this unit near sources of heat. Do
not leave it in an automobile exposed ta direct sunlight for
a long time with the doors and windows closed as this may
deform the cabinet.
sAvoid cuts, scratches, or poor connections in the AC
power cord, as they may result in possible fire or electric
shock hazard. Also. excessive bending, pulling or splicing
of the cord should be avoided.
*Do not unplug the AC power cord by pulling on the cord.
To do so may cause premature failure or shock hazard.
*Do not operate the set on AC power in a bathroom, as &
potential shock hazard may result.
*Vhen nal in use, disconnect the AC power cord from the
AC power outlet.
eThe Function Selector switch does not separate entire unit

MEMORY BACK-UP (FOR COMPUTER)
® Memory Channel Back-up
2-RE6/LRE (UM-3) battarles are needed as preset memory
function.

1. Open the Battery Compartment cover.
2. Insert 2 RE1AS (Parasonic UM-3 or equivalent so!
included) batteries into the Battery Compartment, mak-
ing sure that the batteries are instafied in the designated
numerical order and that the proper polarities are
maintained.
sThe lite of the Memory Back-up Batteries is about one
year
* While exchanging the Memory Back-up Batteries, be sure
tp connect the AC power cord both to the unt and
household AC power outet
E Battery Operation
-T Open the Battery Compartment cover as shown in the

included) batteries into the Battery Compartment, mak-
ing sure that the proper polarities are maintained, and

If you cannot open the cassette compartment cover
and eject the cassette tape when running this unit on
batteries, replace the batteries with new ones and
then perform the operation once again.
Battery life
When the batteries are weak, the tape speed will slow down,
the sound will become distorted, and the volume will
decrease.
Set the Function Selector to "TAPE/NcrE”. Press the
Playback Button. When the sound is distorted, it is ime to
replace ali the batteries with new ones.

This unit comes with the following functions tor receiving
radio broadcasts. Use them as required.
[1] Manual tuning
The frequency IS increased every time the “+” Tuning
Button is pressed; conversely, it is reduced evary time
the "—" Tuning Button is pressed. Use the buttons
repeatedly until the frequency of the station to be tuned
in is indicated,
[2] Auto search tuning
If the “+ or "~" Tuning Button is kept depressed for
half a second or more, the unit will start to search
automatically for broadcasting stations. A station's prog-
ram will be heard for about 2 seconds before the search
continues to the next station.

. Set the Function Selector to "RADIO",
eThe Frequency Display will appear.
2. Press one of the Band Select Buttons to set the desired
radio band.
eThe corresponding Band indicator will appear.
3. Tune in your favorite station using the Tuning Button.
ePress “+” or “—— Button one by one till the correct
frequency indicates in the display and the Tuning
Indicator appears.
Band Tuning Step
FMI, 2 50 kHz
LW, MW 9 kHz
eFor FM reception, set the FM Mode Selector to
“ST”.
The FM Stereo indicator will appear in the display H the
FM stereo broadcast is received.
4. Adiust the Volume, XBS, and Graphic Equalizer Controis
to the desired settings.
(Refer to “Graphic Equalizer” and “Extra Bass Systant”
on page 7.)
5. The radio can be turned off by setting the Function
Selector to "TAPE/OFÉ]".
[31 Preset tuning
The frequencies of stations selected either by manual or
auto search tuning can be preset in the unit's memory
channel buttons. Once such a frequency has been
preset, The corresponding station car be recalied simply
by pressing the Memory Channel Button. This unit
comes with 6 tuning buttons fo preset stations in 4
bands, (FM1, FM2, LW and MW). and it thus enables a
total of 24 stations to be preset.

Orce tre stations have been preset into the memory
buttons for channels 1 through 6. the programs of each
of those stations can be heard for several seconds in
tum simply by pressing the Memory Scan Button. This
function comes in handy for checking out what kind of
broadcasts are now being beamed by the presa!

1. Set the Function Selector to “RADIO”.

4. Foliow the same procedure as described in steps 4-5 of
“Manual tuning”.

it tunes in signals with a certain level of strength. Às

«During tuning (when the display is changing). the
muting function wilt operate and so no sound wil be
heard.
olf an FM stereo stalion cannot be tuned in property
(due to excessive noise in which Case the FM
stereo indicator flickers). set tha FM mode seteclor
to "MONO". This will reduce the noise and provide
clearer reception although the broadcast will no
longer be heard in stereo.
i To memorize the station
1. Tune to the desired broadcast using the Auto Search’

- The Memory Indicator will flash for several seconds.
=" If you cancel it, press the Memory Button once again.
-. Press one of the Memory Channel Buttons (1-6) during
- the Memory Indicator is flashing.
*The Memory Indicator will stop flashing and the

i. Hepeat the steps 1-3 to memorize a station in each of

FM:
Pull out the Telescopic Antenna and adjust its length and
angle for optimum reception.
LW/MW:
eThe sensitive ferrita core antenna Inside the set will
provide excellent LW/MW reception in most areas. For
optimum reception, turn the set in the direction which gives
the best results, since the ferrite core antenna js direc-
tional.
—_M Graphic Equalizer
“It allows you fo tailor the frequency response of the unit to
compensate for room acoustics and other factors which
affect frequency response. The overall tone can be altered
by adjusting the controls which control the following fre-
quency bands:
100 Hz, 1 kHz, 10 kHz.
Positioning the control to the "+" side of the detent will
amplify the corresponding frequency band; the ‘ “—” side will

when the XBS Switch is set to “ON”, the dynamic low
frequency ranges are boosted. Adjust the level by using the
XBS Level Control.

volume levels.
Using this system with the Graphic Equalizer helps you to
get more dynamic sounds.
Notes:
The Extra Bass System effect may be different
according to the program content of the music tape.
eWhen you playback the music tape which was
recorded with a high level, the playback sound may
be distorted. In this case, adjust with the XBS Level
Controi.
TAPE PLAYBACK (DECK 1 DECK "y |
This unit has a dual cassette system. À tape can be played
back with DECK 1 and DECK 2.
m Single Tape Playback
1. Open the Cassette Compartment cover by pressing the
Stop/Eject Button. Insert the playback tene as shown in
the figure, and then close the Cassette Compariment
cover.
2. Set the Function Selector to "TAPE/OFF].
3. Press Mme Playback Button to begin tape playback.
à. Adjust the Volume, Graphic Equalizer Controls and XBS
Level Control as desired.
5. To stop the playback, press the Stop/Eject Button.
E Automatic Playback Relay (DECK 1 to DECK 2)
When DECK 1 playback has finished, DECK 2 playback
starts automatically.
1. Insert the playback tapes into DECK 1 and DECK 2.
2. Press the DECK 1 Playback Button.
3. Press the DECK 2 Pause Button, then press the
Playback Button,
Use only good-quality tapes up to the length of C-90. Do not
use C-120 tapes with this unit because these tapes can
easily become broken or stretched if not used with extreme
care and may get tangled with the Capstan and Pressure
roller.

CASSETTE TAPES
E Fast Forward and Rewind
The tape will move rapidly torward wien the Fast Forward
Button is pressed.
The tape will rewind rapidly when the Rewind Button is
presse.
Note:
Do not press the Playback Button during fast forward
or rewind, as this may jam the tape. Always press the
StorEject Button first, betweer funchons.
NM Cue and Review
M, during tape playback, the Fast Forward'Cue Button :or
the Rewind/Review Button) is partially pressed, the tape wili
be moved rapidly forward {or rewound! and the tape sound
can be heard (atthough garbled) from the Sipesker as lors
as the button is parhaty pressed.
E Full Auto-Stop
When the tape reaches its end during playback, recording,
fast forward or rewind, the automatic stop system will
release the operatior buttons.
Notes:
»Use normal type of cassette lapes only. F other
tapes ars used, you may not obtain optimum
parformance.
eCassettes. both recorded and unrecorded. should
not be stored in locations with high temperature,
high humidity or direct sunhght Never place a
recorded cassette near a magnetic Source, such as
a magnat or & TY sel as Mis may affect tape
performance.
Your attention is drawn to the fact that recording
pre-recorded tapes or discs on other published or
broadcast material may infringe copyright laws.
sis Tis unit has an Automatic Level Control (the recording
level is automatically adjusted).
Hecording Radio Broadcasts
. Follow the procedure described in "RADIO".
_ > Insert the cassette tape into the Cassette Compartment.
== Press the Record Button.
. To stop the recording, press the Stop/Eject Button.
… Set the Function Selector to "TAPETOFF, to turn the unit
off.

Note:
The Graphic Equalizer and XBS Level Controls does
not function when recording. Only the monitor sound
is affected.
“Seat Proof Switch
When an LW, or MW broadcast is recorded, the Beat Proof
. Switch can be used to reduce unwanted “beat” signals

whichever position best reduces these “beat” signals.

—_ Pause Button =
The Pause Button can be used to temporarily stop the tape
from moving during recording or playback.
_ Before beginning a recording, first press and lock the Pause
Button. Then press the Record Button. (The tape will not
move.) When ready to record, press the Pause Button to
release it. This will start tape movement for immediate
recording.
Note:
Do not use the Pause Button to stop the tape for a
long period of time.
The unit is not turned off when the Pause Button is
pressed. Always use the Stop/Eject Button to turn the
unit off.
HM Monitoring
The monitor system enables you lo listen, through the
Speakers or headphones, to the sound as it is being
recorded.
If it is necessary to adjust the volume level of the sound
being monitored, do so by using the Volume Control
sWhen recording from the Built-in Microphone, the sound
being recorded cannot be monitored.
EM Erasure of Recording
When recording, previously recorded signals on the tape will
be erased automatically.
To erase a tape without re-recording, use the following
procedure. (Make no connections to the CD/Line Input
Jacks.)
1. Set the Function Selector to “[CD]/LINE”.

1. Connect the output of the external equipment to the

MAINTENANCE
The head assembly, Capstan, and Pressure roller are in
constant contact with the tape. ' these parts are dirty, the
sound quality will be impaired. Get into the habit of cleaning
the parts regularly (after every 10 hours or so of use) in
accordance with the procedure outiined below.
