INTRODUCTION
ESAB Software Administration Tool, ESAT is a kit for service including software and a
CAN-interface.
With ESAT it is possible to:
S
control, change or read data and functions in the connected equipment
S
change basic settings
S
handle synergy lines
S
update software (firmware) in the connected equipment.
The software update has to be performed by a trained service technician.
The ESAT software runs on a PC with Windows. The PC is connected to the equipment via
the CAN-interface or an IP-network.
The ESAT CAN-interface is available with:
S
USB2CAN, for connection to a USB port.
This document
This document describes what the various menus in the ESAT installation program means,
and what the various selections/options do.

SYSTEM REQUIREMENTS
To
S
S
S
use the ESAT you need a computer with operating system:
Windows XP Professional 32-bit with latest service pack.
Windows Vista
32-bit, Business or Ultimate edition with latest service pack.
Windows 7
32- and 64-bit, with latest service pack.
The software might work with Windows; 9x Second Edition, NT4 or NT 2000 but this is no
longer supported.
CAN interface requirements
To make the connection between computer and machine you must use a CAN-adapter.
Currently the supported adapter is:
S
ATAS USB2CAN (ESAB Service kit for USB)
Older interfaces should still work, but are not officially supported:
S
IXXAT Compact
S
IXXAT USB-to-CAN
S
Mecel PPCAN (old ESAB Service kit for parallel port)
Updating of ESAB equipment
To make an update/upgrade of ESAB equipment, you also need the file with firmware to
load into the connected equipment. This information will be sent out to registered users of
ESAT.
Register the software to receive updates for equipment
Please register the software by sending an e-mail to [email protected] and become a
registered ESAT-user. All registered ESAT-users will receive information when there is a
new release of the ESAT software or new firmware to load into equipment.

Load options
S Enable safe mode
S Enable slow mode
S Enable fast mode
S Automatic
Some older units are slow and with modern fast computers this can cause problems
with program loading. If you are experiencing problems with loading programs choose
the “Enable slow mode” or if that fails choose “Enable safe mode” . The safe mode is
very slow but if the other options fail this may be the solution to be able to load . The
default choice is “Automatic” which uses a predefined setting from the configuration file.
S
Search options
S Old Esab can
S New Esab Canopen
S Both
This setting let you choose which CAN system to use when searching. This is useful
when you want to send a CAN-message only to a single motor drive card. When using
the setting “Both” the search is first performed on EsabCAN and then on CANOpen.
This will set the card in EsabCAN state because it is the first CAN message to the card
that set this. To set the card to CANOpen choose the setting “New Esab Canopen” and
to choose ESABCan the setting “Old Esab can”. In a system with for example PEK and
a power source. The PEK will set the CAN system automatically.

DSP units
For some units there is now also DSP units available for download. These units are
handled a bit differently when it comes to program-loading than other units. You follow
the program loading procedure for ESABCANOpen systems but with a few extra steps
following point 5:
Right click on the text "boot" in the "mode" column for the unit that has the DSPs as

Synergic upload / download
The weld data units from ESAB contains default synergic data for combinations of wire type,
gas type and wire dimension.
The Synergic upload / download tab makes it possible to:
S
S
S
S
S
upload your own synergic lines from Weld data unit (if supported)
save the synergic lines as files in the computer
compose synergic groups from different files
download synergic lines
combine synergic lines from opened synergic package files (*.syd) and uploaded lines.

Weld data unit search
0, Weld data unit, SW version 1.30C, Machine id 9
Before any action can be made (synergic upload or download), a search for welding data
units has to be made. However, it is possible to open several synergic packages and to
combine those and save in a new file before any search for units has been done.

Upload
To upload data from the welding device click on the
`Upload' button.
Note:
MA6 and U6: Only lines in group 99
U8 and U82: Only own created lines.
If an error occurred during upload for example, if the
unit did not have any up-loadable data, the error
would be displayed to the user in form of a message box indicating what went wrong.
If the upload list is populated it is now possible to save the uploaded synergic data to
file. To save the data to file click the `Save' button. Choose a destination and click OK.
If another upload is made the previously uploaded data will be lost if it has not been saved
to disc.
3
Open file
To open an existing file (*.syd), click on the `Open
file' button.
Note: Only Syd-files can be opened.
Choose the file to open and click OK.
If the file is in the correct file format and a synergic
package file, the open file list will be populated.
The little yellow book represented the synergic
package (the open file) while the little grey and
yellow symbols and their lines represents synergic lines.
If the package column is dragged to the right the file name will be visible in the first package
line.
4
Download and combine
If either the upload list or the open file list are
populated, it is possible to move synergic lines to
the “combine” list. Right next to the open file list
and the upload list an arrow button is visible. These
buttons is greyed out, if its corresponding list is not
populated.
To move a synergic line or a synergic package,
select the line and click on the corresponding
`Arrow' button. Multiple lines can be selected.
To select multiple lines hold down the control
button on the keyboard (Ctrl) and click on the lines
to mark more files.
In the open file list, whole packages can be moved
by marking the file name and then click on the `Move' button.
Note: Lines that you moved are essentially copied since no lines are removed while clicking
on the arrow button.

To save a combined packet, click on the `Save' button and select the destination to save.
If the combine list is populated, it is possible to download the combined list to the welding
data unit.
(There are limitations for how many lines that can be downloaded to the machine, check
manual for the Weld data unit).
To start a download, click on the `Download' button. If the download fails, an error message
box will be displayed.
Download is finished when the progress bar reaches hundred percent. After download, a
message box indicates to restart the unit.
Note: If the download lists contain one or more lines that have incomplete choices it cannot
be downloaded to the welding data unit. Incomplete in this sense means that the synergic
line does not have a chosen method, material, gas or dimension. Alternatively, the
corresponding choice has no text that can be displayed.
Notes
Notes
It is possible to add a note to the synergic packages. This note will be saved in the file with
the synergic data.
The list displays the file version, global list version and the machine identity. In the editable
section, write your note. To save the note, click on the “Add note” button. To close the note
hit the close button.
Note: The information in “Notes” are not saved to the welding device.

CANOpen Object Read-Write
The CANOpen Object Read-Write tab makes it possible to read and write SDOs on ESAB
CANOpen systems. You will need a specification for which SDO to use to be able to use
this functionality properly.
The attribute memory loader can be used to load the attribute memory from a file containing
certain settings. This is done by first searching for the units and then selecting the one that
you want to update the attribute memory for. When this is done the file containing the
attribute file can be selected and the settings loaded to the machine.
These functions should only be used by ESAB trained service technicians.
Please Contact ESAB Helpdesk/Service department in Laxå, Sweden for more information.
