Wireless LAN settings
The settings for the wireless LAN are made here.
To change the standard WLAN settings, proceed as follows:
€ On the home page, click the "General Setup" button and then
select "Wireless" in the menu on the left.
Basic settings
$ Select "Basic Settings" in the menu on the left.
€ Under "Mode", select the function that the device is to perform in
the network.
Mode Comments
This is the most-used operating mode.
Devices can be connected wirelessly to
Access Point each other using a WLAN router and then
establish connections to the Internet or to
LAN devices connected to the router.
The WLAN router can be connected to a
Station (infrastruc- LAN device such as a television or game
ture) console and acts as WLAN adapter for the
device in order to connect to the WLAN.
Connects two Ethernet LANs wirelessly to
each other. In this mode, clients are not
able to log on via a wireless connection.
AP Bridge -
Point-to-Point
Connects several Ethernet LANs wirelessly
with each other. In this mode, clients are
not able to log on via a wireless connection.
AP Bridge -
Point-to-Multipoint
Connects several Ethernet LANs wirelessly
AP bridge WDS with each other and clients are also able to
log on via a wireless connection.
Combines the access point mode and the
station mode and extends the wireless
range of existing WLANs by repeating the
signal.

WDS (Wireless Distribution System) is the term for the wireless con-
nection between several access points. In addition, it permits logon
of clients that pure bridge operating modes do not allow. For each ad-
ditional access point, the bandwidth of the network is halved because
the packages have to be transmitted twice.

Setting of the wireless LAN encryption
A distinction must be made between the following terms:
m Authentication:
is a process during which for example, the identity of a person is
determined by means of a certain feature. For example, this can
be a fingerprint, a password or another form of authorisation.
m Encryption:
is a process during which a "plain text" is transformed into a
"secret text" by means of an encryption routine (algorithm). One
or more codes can be used for this. Each individual encryption
method offers one or more possibilities for authentication.
» Encryption is switched on by default. For security reasons, it is
recommended to use your own WLAN key.
In addition to WPA, the device also supports the older method WEP
(Wired Equivalent Privacy). WEP is only necessary if all the client
computers in the wireless LAN are not able to use the WPA method.
» Be aware that the WEP method is now not considered to be
secure. lt is possible that WEP-encrypted data can be read and
manipulated by unauthorised third parties. We therefore recom-
mend not to use WEP and only use the secure WPA encryption
method.
WLAN Router 300
Configuration and operation
To set the Wireless LAN encryption, proceed as follows:
€ On the home page, click the "General Setup" button and then
select "Wireless" in the menu on the left.
€ Select the mode under basic settings and confirm with "APPLY".
$ Then select "Security settings" in the menu on the left.
Various different encryptions are available depending on the selected
mode:
m Deactivating
m Wired Equivalent Privacy (WEP) with 64 bit and 128 bit
m Wi-Fi Protected Access (WPA) Pre-Shared Key
= WPA RADIUS
Ф Select the encryption method and enter the corresponding data
according to the input mask (see following pages).
» Entering upper and lower case characters are relevant
when assigning the password and increase the security
considerably.
@ In the next view, click on the "APPLY" button and again on the
"APPLY" button in the following view to save the settings.
The device will be restarted. After restarting, the wireless LAN is
available with encryption.
WLAN Router 300 37
38
Deactivating

WEP encryption is an outdated encryption method and is not recom-
mended because it is considered to be insecure.

» Only use the DMZ option when it is absolutely required. This
allows the specified devices to be seen in the Internet and
therefore makes them extremely vulnerable to attack.
» In order to allow programmes to communicate with the Internet
via special ports, enable the required ports under NAT.
NAT (Network Address Translation)
The NAT function ensures that several Internet-capable devices can
use the Internet simultaneously. At the same time, you are protected
against hacker attacks from the Internet. NAT only temporarily ena-
bles the ports requested by your internal network. You can assign an
IP address or permanent ports via the settings. These ports are then
accessible via the Internet page of the connected devices.
