Shimano SL-M451 Shifting Lever Service Instructions
Shimano FD-M451 is a front derailleur designed for use with Shimano's Index System (SIS). It is compatible with 228.00 - 328.60mm (1-3/32” —1-1/8”) band diameters and 34 ~ 54mm (1-11/32" ~ 2-1/8") band type diameters. @®Because the high cable resistance of a frame with internal
cable guides would impair the SIS function, this type of
frame should not be used.
e The only type of frame that can be used is the type in which the
inner wire lead passes through the lower part of the B.B. shell.

Clearance
1. ANT 1-3mm
If using Biopace gears, set the front
derailleur while the crank arm is in a
direct line with the seat tube.
The special alignment tool (TL-FD21) is
convenient for checking the installation
of the front derailleur to the frame.

Secure the chain guide with a
5 mm Allen key.

2. Cable assembly
Pull the inner cable and secure it. After the initial stretch is gone, secure it once
again.
(Tightening torque: 50kgfcm (43 in.lbs.))

5. Shifting check and monitor adjustment
After completion of 1—4, move the shift lever to check the shifting.
(This also applies if shifting becomes difficult during use.)
If the chain falls to the crank side Tighten the top adjustment bolt clockwise
(about 1/4 turn).
Return the top adjustment bolt counter-
clockwise (about 1/8 turn).
If shifting is difficult from the
intermediate gear to the large gear
If shifting is difficult from the
intermediate gear to the small gear
If shifting is difficult from the small gear
to the intermediate gear
If there is interference of the chain and
front derailleur inner plate at the largest
gear of the front chain wheel
If there is interference of the chain and
front derailleur outer plate at the largest
gear of the front chain wheel
Return the low adjustment bolt counter-
clockwise {about 1/4 turn).
Return the cable-adjustment bolt counter-
clockwise (about 1/2—1 turn).
Tighten the top adjustment bolt clockwise
(about 1/8 turn).
Return the top adjustment bolt counter-
clockwise (1/8 turn).
If, after the above minor adjustments, the shifting is still not satisfactory, check the
installation position of the front derailleur (the clearance between it and the large
gear, and whether it is correctly parallel with the large gear), turn the cable-
adjustment bolt 3 or 4 turns, and, after returning in the counterclockwise direction,
once again make the adjustment described in the section “Adjustment”.
