Important notice

Due to transport reasons, Flat Sat Classic Digital comes packaged in two separate cartons: a) The first item contains the driving unit with all the cables and the control unit.

b) the second item only contains the dish.

It is essential to check that the dish has not been damaged during transport when the package is opened. In particular, check the following well:

• By resting the dish edge against a flat surface (e.g. the floor or a wall) check that it makes contact to the surface all around. If it is not so, try and make the edge level, without denting the dish, or call our After-Sales.

After checking that everything is in order, install the dish on the driving unit as follows:

1) Temporarily connect the Control unit to the driving unit through the grey motor cable.

2) Power both the Control unit and the receiver using a battery.

3) Press the Red button (ON/OFF) in the remote control and extend the dish support mast.

4) Press the " STOP " button in the remote control to lock the mast in a vertical position.

5) Secure the dish to the mast and screw down the four supplied screws.

6) Press the " DOWN " button in the remote control and lower the antenna.

7) Disconnect the Control unit, the battery and install Flat Sat Classic Digital on the vehicle.

15) Carefully seal the hole where the cables pass into the vehicle to prevent water from coming in. Fig. 14.

12

Connections

16) Connect the (motor) grey cable to the MOTOR UNIT Connector and the white (antenna) coaxial cable to the ANTENNA Connector in the Control. (Fig. 15).

17) Connect the MIR remote control Extension to the IR REMOTE connector in the Control Unit. (Fig. 15).

18) Connect the BLACK power supply cable of the CONTROL UNIT to the NEGATIVE

POLE of the vehicle 12 Volt battery, and the RED cable to the POSITIVE POLE + (remember not to mix the + and - poles up), using 2 cables of a diameter of 2,5 mm (5 mm2 cross-section). (Fig. 15).

19) The GREEN safety cable of the Control Unit must be connected to the consensus of the vehicle startup console (in many cases such consensus is located on Pin 15 in the main terminal board). In this way, whenever the motor is started, this cable receives a positive + 12 Vdc voltage, which will automatically lower the antenna and lock all functions of the Control Unit simultaneously (Fig.15).

WARNING

This technical note is to call the attention of the installation personnel to certain details of

Flat Sat Classic Digital installation.

During installation, you must take the following precautions:

The power supply cable must come directly from the battery and be of a minimum crosssection of 5 sq.mm. Only the Flat Sat Classic Digital must be connected to this cable; all the other devices must be connected to another power supply cable.

The cable connecting the driving unit to the Flat Sat Classic Digital Control Box must NEV-

ER be cut for any reason whatsoever: should the cable turn out to be too long, wind the extra part into a coil in a free area of the vehicle. Leave a little cable in the driving unit area; should any technical operation be required, it will make it easier to remove the driving unit.

Also, before checking its operation, we suggest you make sure that:

The outside converter (also called LNB) has been installed properly and locked into its plastic lock nut. Remember that the outside converter has its own assembly position which must be complied with. Otherwise you will not receive any signal. The preset assembly position of the converter is along the median line of the dish (Fig. A) and in this configuration the Flat Sat Classic Digital system operates properly in most European countries. If however you are in areas which are very far from the orbital position of the satellite, you could need to adjust the angle of the converter. In particular, if you wish to receive any transmission from the Astra 19E, Astra 28E or Hot Bird 13E satellites and you are in Portugal or Morocco, you should adjust the converter angle as shown on fig. B2, whereas if you are in Turkey, you should set the converter on the B1 position for the same satellites.

Below you will find a table to help you setting the best angle Place

User manual Flat Sat Classic Digital Operation System

15

Flat Sat Classic Digital is a fully automatic satellite tracking system. It is able to track satellites which transmit DIGITAL signals.

All information about operation are shown on the TV screen upon turning the system on. In order to give all users easy access to this sytem, we tried to make operations simpler:

• satellite searching

• required program searching

• antenna lowering

Satellite seeking

When Flat Sat Classic Digital is off (Antenna down), press the Red button (ON/OFF) on the remote control to start the searching procedure which ends when the TV pictures appear.

Programme seeking

Once the antenna has been pointed to the required satellite, radio and television stations can be received by simply shifting programs with the remote control. To receive programs from other satellites, you will just have to key in the number of your required program on your remote control, or select it from the program list. Flat Sat Classic Digital will then search for the next satellite and store the corresponding antenna position.

Antenna lowering

When Flat Sat Classic Digital is on (antenna is up), press the (yellow) DOWN button to bring the antenna down and switch the system off.

As long as the antenna is coming down, the following message is brought to the display:

Antenna parking

Followed by:

Antenna Parked

When the antenna reaches its horizontal position, Flat Sat Classic Digital will go off and TV messages will disappear. Should you forget to lower the antenna before starting up with your road vehicle, don't worry: the moment you turn the engine ignition key, a special safety circuit will lower the antenna automatically, keeping it locked in place as long as the vehicle moves. This however is possible only if the special Green cable has been connected to the ignition key at the time.

N.B.

Because of this safety function, remember that if you decide to turn the engine on in order to charge the batteries of the vehicle, the Flat Sat Classic Digital will automatically bring the antenna down; as long as the engine is running, it will not be possible to perform searching.

16

Additional operations

1) With the antenna pointed to a satellite, the Control unit may be turned off (by pressing the Red push-button) (ON/OFF) without having to lower the antenna. In this case, the total consumption by the system Flat Sat Classic Digital will be cut down to less than

1A.. To power the Control unit back on, just press the Red push-button (ON/OFF) on the remote control once again.

2) If the antenna is in motion, the red push-button (ON/OFF) will not be working to prevent the Control unit being switched off which would make satellite searching ineffective.

3) In the event that Flat Sat Classic Digital does not find the selected satellite, it will stop the antenna at the end of its stroke (either all the way out or all the way in) and show the message " Failed Search ". If this happens, the antenna can be lowered by pressing the DOWN push-button or a program transmitted by another satellite can be selected.

Changing satellites during search

The Flat Sat Classic Digital always starts its automatic search by examining the satellite which transmits the last programme chosen before turning the system off (e.g. Astra,

Channel 1). Should you wish to launch an automatic search for another satellite, proceed as follows:

• Press the RED (ON/OFF) key on the remote control to swhitch on the system.

• Press the STOP key to stop the antenna temporarily (the words "Search suspended" will be displayed on the TV set)

• Choose the new channel transmitted by the satellite you want (e.g. Channel 117, Hot

Bird)

• After a few seconds, the antenna will start searching again and will stop on the new satellite (Hot Bird).

WARNING

: if the antenna is stopped with the STOP button, this can ONLY be restarted if a programme transmitted by another satellite is selected.

Safety function

If, for any reason (trees, ice, etc.), the antenna is not able to move freely during the operation, it will stop at once and the following message will be displayed:

Motors Locked

After having verified the reason for the blockage, press the DOWN key and then remove the cause.

17

Important information

for proper antenna pointing

1) Before performing antenna pointing, make sure you have positioned your vehicle so the view towards the South (where Satellite signals come from) is free from any nearby obstacle (trees, houses, etc.). This way, the antenna will be free to receive signals coming from the satellite.

WRONG POSITION

RINGH POSITION

2) It is also important to know that satellites do not transmit with the same intensity throughout Europe, so if you are outside the reception area, your Flat Sat Classic Digital search might be unsuccessful. The reception areas for each Satellite can be found on the main magazines dealing in this line of business. Also remember that the larger the dish, the more reception area

Tips on the best use

When you park your vehicle, make sure that:

1) No obstacle (for example trees) is too near your antenna, preventing it from moving freely. No metal or glass wall is very near (about 5 m) the antenna, since this would act as a mirror for satellite signals and could induce the antenna to point towards it.

2) In case of snow or ice actuating the Flat Sat Classic Digital free it in order to avoid wasting battery power in order to lift it.

3) If you decide to turn the engine of your vehicle on in order to re-charge its batteries, with the safety cable connected to the ignition key, the antenna, if lifted, will come down automatically and it will not be possible to lift it again as long as the engine is running.

4) Make sure that your batteries are always sufficiently charged, since, if the voltage falls below 10 Volts, the Flat Sat Classic Digital electronic safety circuit will prevent the antenna from rising.

18

5) Should you use 12 Volt feeders instead of batteries in order to feed the Flat Sat Classic Digital, be careful to use high quality stabilized feeders with a supplied power of at least 10A. At all costs, avoid using low quality, non stabilized battery feeders.

Trouble-shooting

If the Flat Sat Classic Digital has not found the satellite after a complete search, check the following: a) Is the view towards the South free from any obstacle?

b) Is the place you are at within the reception area of the satellite you have chosen?

c) Is the cable connecting the LNB to the antenna firmly fastened? It could have been ripped off or come loose because of contact with an unexpected d) Are all the connections on the Control Unit properly set up?

If the antenna has stopped after performing pointing, but neither messages nor images appear on the screen: a Is the SCART cable connected?

b If the TV set is not connected by a SCART cable, but is connected by a

COAX cable to the TV socket, have you chosen the right programme on

If the antenna does not move when you press the Red push-button, check the a) Are the RED and BLACK cables properly connected to the battery?

The RED cable must be on the + pole, the BLACK cable on the - pole.

b) Should you have mixed up the cables, first disconnect them, replace the safety fuse on the bottom of the Control Unit using a similar one (10 A), then re-connect the

RED and BLACK cables properly to the battery.

c) Is the engine on your vehicle running? Turn it off, since this means the safety system which keeps the antenna down is operating.

°

C

24

Installation tips

1) The MIR remote control Extension must be installed in such a way as to make sure that it is always visible and that the remote control can therefore operate normally.

2) Do not install the Control Unit in an area subject to liquid spilling which could cause irreparable damage to it.

3) Do no install the Control Unit in too small a space with poor ventilation, because excessive heat could alter its good operation

Receiver installation

Introduction

To perform properly the receiver needs to be connected properly. If your receiver has been installed by a technician it will be ready for operation and you can go straight to the section on “

Immediate use of the receiver

”. If you are installing the unit yourself follow the instructions below.

Main connections

Connecting the lead from the satellite dish

Connect the coaxial lead from the satellite dish using an F-connector on the input socket

(1). Make sure that the central conductor of the coaxial lead is inserted correctly in the receiver and is not bent or twisted.

Connecting the SCART cable between the receiver and the TV or monitor

Insert one end of the SCART cable in the socket (5) and connect the other end to the TV set. It is always best to use a complete SCART plug (i.e. one with 21 pins); doing so allows you to use RGB mode (where the TV set has this feature), which gives better image quality. If your TV set does not have a SCART connection (or a base band audio/video input), the receiver can be connected with the modulator as described below.

Connecting the coaxial cable between receiver and TV

Insert the coaxial cable in the socket (8) and connect the other end to the TV antenna. If you have an antenna for reception of terrestrial TV signals it can be connected to the antenna input socket (9). In this case it is necessary to ensure that the output channel set on the receiver (between channel 21 and channel 69) is free from any terrestrial TV antenna interference.

Connecting the remote control infrared sensor

All receiver functions can be controlled via the remote control. The remote control emits infrared signals that are captured by a remote sensor supplied with the receiver. Position the remote infrared sensor within view of the remote control unit (e.g. near the TV). The remote infrared sensor has an adhesive base so that it can be installed where desired.

Warning:

do NOT install the remote infrared sensor near fluorescent lighting or strong electrical fields as they can reduce the capacity of the sensor to capture signals emitted by the remote control.

25

Connecting to the power supply

Using the supplied lead, connect up to an electrical power source. The electrical power supply specifications are:

 Power Supply 12V DC ±20 %

 Socket-available current, minimum 5 Ampere.

Electrical power supplies provided via adapters must comply with the above-indicated minimum requisites.

Use of unsuitable power supply devices such as rectified but non-stabilized adapters, battery chargers, AC adapters or switching battery chargers may cause malfunctions or damage. In this case the warranty is null and void.

Additional connections

Connecting to a video recorder

Insert the SCART cable in the socket (4) of the receiver (labelled VCR). This allows you to record the selected service on tape or play a VHS cassette.

Connecting to a monitor in S-VHS

If you are using a monitor or TV with a S-VHS input the receiver can be connected via the socket (6) labelled S-VHS. This type of connector provides a CVS video signal (i.e. with luminance and chrominance signals separated); for the audio signal it will be necessary to use the relevant sockets (7).

Connecting a Home Theatre system

The receiver can receive an audio signal in S/PDIF (PCM) digital format via the RCA socket in the audio zone (7). Using a RCA-RCA lead, the digital audio signal can be sent to an amplifier or Home Theatre system: this raises the audio on the received service to CDlevel quality.

26

Immediate use of the receiver

Introduction

Your receiver is supplied pre-programmed with a wide range of TV and radio stations.

Therefore, once it has been connected your receiver can be used immediately.

Switching on the receiver

The main on-off switch is on the front panel of the receiver. This connects/disconnects the power supply. This switch is useful when the receiver is left idle for long periods: when using the receiver on a daily basis it is advisable to use the

STANDBY

function on the remote control.

When you press the ON/OFF key on the remote control the receiver comes on and the frontal display shows the legend

ON

followed by the previously selected service (if this is the first time the receiver is used the number 1 appears). An info banner indicating the (TV or Radio) service being received appears on your TV screen (figure 3).

The info banner shows the following information:

 The type of service (TV or RADIO)

The service number

 The service name

 A description of the event in progress (generally the name)

 Duration of event (where available)

 Icons showing details of the event and service being broadcast, any Teletext, language, access control.

The info banner disappears after a few seconds to provide an unhindered view of the screen.

27

Changing service

To change service press the number key(s) on the remote control keypad that correspond to the number of the desired station. The info banner will reappear and the figure you have just keyed in will appear in the upper-right corner of the screen.

The service number can be incremented or decremented by one unit via the keys.

Favourites lists which were factory-loaded

At the time of being sold, the receiver can be provided with some favourites lists which were factory-loaded in order to help a less experienced user upon its first use. Each of these lists contains the most widespread services in a given geographical area, it is therefore intended for such area.

These lists are in every respect a first customization of the receiver, which can easily be removed by the user.

As such it CANNOT be restored any more if the receiver is brought back to its minimum setting (factory default).

Other immediate functions

When viewing a service you can access several other immediate functions that allow you to modify receiver operation. Some of these - such as volume control and the

MUTE

function - act directly on the service being watched:

29

Other functions, instead, provide additional information on the event/program being broadcast, such as title, start/end times, a brief synopsis or summary. For example, pressing the

INFO key on the remote control will provide a short summary of the event in progress as illustrated in the figure 7:

Press the EPG key to view comments (where available) or use the formation on the event in progress (the first) or the next one (the second).

keys to select in-

Glossary

Bouquet

The term Bouquet refers to a package of services (services) included in a single offer.

A Network or Broadcaster may manage one or more bouquet offers.

CA

Acronym for Control Access. Indicates that the service you wish to receive is encrypted. To use such services you need an electronic device that decodes the received signal (e.g. CAM module and SmartCard).

CAM

Acronym for Control Access Module. Indicates the electronic decoder module inserted in the PCMCIA connector. The rear part of module has a slot for insertion of the Smart-

Card. There are different CAM modules, each designed to operate with a specific CA system.

FEC and Symbol rate

Parameters characterising transmission of the digital signal in the transponder. They must correspond with the transmitted signal.

Network or Broadcaster

The term Network or Broadcaster refers to the company supplying the service within one or more bouquets.

Transponder

The term transponder refers to a satellite transmission service. On previous analogue systems a transponder could carry only one program; with digital transmission, instead, several programs (services) can be carried.

Service

The term service refers to the program you wish to receive. Unlike previous analogue systems the term service is now preferred (rather than program) because, in DVB digital applications, the content of the transmitted information is wider-ranging. For example, it may be a TV program and also a radio one, a set of computer data, access control info etc.

SmartCard

The SmartCard is a removable electronic device which authorises access to services.

About the same size as a credit card, it houses a programmable device that grants access to certain services and contains information on the period of use. The SmartCard is designed for use together with the Control Access device (see CAM), which must be must be able to read the information it contains.
