1. Work area safety

a. Keep work area clean and well lit. Cluttered or dark areas invite accidents. Rags, cloths, cord, string and similar items should never be left around the work area.

b. Do not operate power tools in explosive environments, such as in the

presence of flammable liquids, gases, or dust. Power tools

create sparks, which may ignite the dust or fumes. c. Keep children and bystanders away while operating a power tool.

Distractions can cause the operator to lose control.

2. Electrical safety

a. Power tool plugs must match the outlet. Never modify the plug in any

way. Do not use any adapter plugs with grounded power tools.

Unmodified plugs and matching outlets will reduce risk of electric shock.

4

49290 909 BC/LT IM ED2.indd 6 8/02/2017 11:00 AM b. Avoid body contact with grounded surfaces such as pipes, radiators,

ranges and refrigerators. There is increased risk of electric shock if your

body is grounded.

c. Do not expose power tools to rain or wet conditions. Water entering a power tool will increase the risk of electric shock.

d. Do not abuse the cord. Never use the cord for carrying, pulling or unplugging the power tool. Keep cord away from heat, oil, sharp edges or moving parts. Replace damaged cords immediately.

Damaged or entangled cords increase the risk of electric shock.

e. When operating a power tool outdoors, use an extension cord suitable

for outdoor use. Use of a cord suitable for outdoor reduces the risk

of electric shock. f. To reduce the risk of electric shock, the manufacturer recommends the

use of a residual current of 30mA or less at all times.

3. Personal safety

a. Stay alert, watch what you are doing and use common sense when

operating a power tool. Do not use a power tool while you are tired or

under the influence of drugs, alcohol or medication. A moment of inattention while operating power tools may result in serious personal injury.

a. Use personal protective equipment. Always wear eye protection.

Protective equipment such as dust mask, non-skid safety shoes, hard hat, or hearing protection will reduce personal injures.

a. Prevent unintentional starting. Ensure the switch is in the “off” position before connecting to power source and/or battery pack, picking up or carrying the tool. Carrying power tools with your finger on the switch or energising power tools that have the switch on invites accidents.

a. Remove any adjusting key or wrench before turning the power tool on.

A wrench or key left attached to a rotating part of the power tool may result in personal injury.

a. Do not overreach. Keep proper footing and balance at all times.

This enables better control of the power tool in unexpected situations.

a. Dress properly. Do not wear loose clothing or jewellery. Keep your hair, clothing and gloves away from moving parts. Loose clothes, jewellery or long hair can be caught in moving parts.

a. If devices are provided for the connection of dust extraction and

collection facilities, ensure these are connected and properly used.

Use of dust collection can reduce dust-related hazards.

4. Power tool use and care

a. Do not force the power tools. Use the correct power tool for your application. The correct power tool will do the job better and safer at the rate for which it was designed.

a. Do not use the power tool if the switch does not turn it “on” and

“off”. Any power tool that cannot be controlled with the switch is

dangerous and must be repaired.

a. Disconnect the plug from the power source and/or the battery

pack from the power tool before making any adjustments,

changing accessories, or storing power tools. Such preventive

safety measures reduce the risk of starting the power tool accidentally.

a. Store idle power tools out of the reach of children and do not

allow persons unfamiliar with the power tool or these instructions

to operate the power tool. Power tools are dangerous in the hands of

untrained users.

a. Maintain power tools with care. Check for misalignment or binding of moving parts, breakage of parts and any other condition that may affect the power tool’s operation. If damaged, have the power tool repaired before use. Many accidents are caused by poorly maintained power tools.

a. Keep cutting tools sharp and clean. Properly maintained cutting tools with sharp cutting edges are less likely to bind and are easier to control.

a. Use the power tool, accessories and tool bits etc. in accordance

with these instructions, taking into account the working

conditions and the work to be performed. Use of the power tool for

operations different from those intended could result in a hazardous situation.

Additional Safety Rules for Petrol Line Trimmers.

• Follow all sections of the Additional Safety Rules for Petrol Products.

• Always wear goggles, earmuffs and a dusk mask when using the Line

Trimmer.

• Only use the length and diameter of nylon cutting line as detailed in this manual. Never use any other cutting material.

• Never use the Line Trimmer without the supplied and correctly fitted guard.

• Ensure the line trimming blade is in good order to ensure the correct length of cutting line is maintained.

• Keep bystanders at least 5 metres away from the operating the Line

Trimmer.

• During operation, always hold the Line Trimmer with both hands, and make use of the Double Shoulder Strap Harness.

• Maintain a firm footing. Wear suitable fully enclosed footwear.

• Always turn off the petrol motor when making adjustments to the cutting head or line, when cleaning, or performing any maintenance tasks.

• When operating the Line Trimmer, be aware of the ground where the

Line Trimmer is being operated. The cutting head and line is designed to trim grass and similar undergrowth, and stones and foreign matter should be avoided.

• Prior to operation, ensure the assembled line Line Trimmer is checked for loose components and the operating controls of the trimmer.

Do not use the Line Trimmer if the controls are not in perfect working order. Ensure all nuts, bolts and clamps are all tight.

Additional Safety rules for Petrol Brushcutters

WARNING: Extreme care must be taken when using blades to ensure safe operation. Read the safety information for safe operation using the blade.

• Follow all sections of the Additional Safety Rules for Petrol Products.

• Always hold Brushcutter with both hands when operating. Use a firm grip on both handles.

• Maintain your grip and balance on both feet. Position yourself so that you will not be drawn off balance by the kick-back reaction of the cutting blade.

• Inspect and clear the area of any hidden objects such as glass, stones, concrete, fencing, wire, wood, metal, etc.

49290 909 BC/LT IM ED2.indd 10 8/02/2017 11:00 AM

• Never use blades near footpaths, fencing, posts, buildings or other immovable objects.

• Never use a blade after hitting a hard object without first inspecting it for damage. Do not use if any damage is detected.

• The unit is used as a scythe, cutting from the right to the left in a broad sweeping action from side to side.

• Always wear goggles, earmuffs and a dusk mask when using the

Brushcutter.

• Only use blades with a cutting diameter of 255mm and a bore size of 25.4 mm.

• Only use the Brushcutter with the correctly supplied and fitted

Brushcutter guard.

• Keep bystanders a minimum of 15 metres from the operation of the

Brushcutter.

• Prior to operation, ensure the assembled Brushcutter is checked for loose components and the operating controls of the Brushcutter.

Do not use the Brushcutter if the controls are not in perfect working order. Ensure all nuts, bolts and clamps are all tight.

• Check the blade is correctly seated and the blade nut is tight.

• DO NOT substitute the blade with any other types of blade other than that is detailed in this manual. DO NOT fit a saw blade to this product.

• This brushcutter is fitted with a centrifugal clutch. At idle, the blade must not be rotating. Make a practice to always check the clutch is correctly operating and at idle the blade does not rotate, and rotation of the blade only occurs as the speed of the motor is increase from manually operating the speed trigger.

Do NOT use the brushcutter if the blade at idle speed is rotating and take it to an authorised service centre.

• Exercise extreme caution when using the 3T brushcutter blade with this unit. Blade thrust is the reaction which may occur when the spinning 3T brushcutter blade contacts anything it cannot cut.

This contact may cause the 3T brushcutter blade to stop for an instant, and suddenly “thrust” the unit away from the object that was hit.

This reaction can be violent enough to cause the operator to lose control of the unit. Blade thrust may occur without warning if the blade snags, stalls or binds. This is more then likely to occur in areas where it is difficult to see the material being cut.

Operation of the Brushcutter / Line Trimmer

Adding and Checking the oil

IMPORTANT: The motor of this brushcutter / line trimmer is packed with NO

OIL in the motor. Prior to starting the motor, oil MUST be added to the oil reservoir (24). Failure to add sufficient oil will result in damage to the motor which is NOT covered under the warranty of the unit.

NOTE: This is a 4 stroke brushcutter / line trimmer. The motor sump MUST be filled with 70mL of SAE 10W/30 BEFORE starting. Fresh unleaded fuel must be used in this unit. Do not use ethanol based fuels.

Do NOT mix oil with fuel. Oil must be separately poured into the sump of the motor as follows, and also the oil level MUST be checked every time the line trimmer / brushcutter is used.

NEVER attempt to remove the oil dipstick (24) while the motor is running.

ENSURE the motor is not running when the oil level is being checked.

On a new unit, the motor needs to be filled with 70mL of SAE 10W/30 engine oil.

To initially fill with oil or to check the oil level, follow the process below.

1. Lay the unit down so that the fuel tank bracket

(39) is resting on a secure surface, or on the ground. Clean the area directly around the oil reservoir (24) (Fig. A).

2. Clean the area directly around the oil dipstick

(24), and then fully remove/unthread the oil dipstick in an anti clockwise direction.

A.

3. On a new unit which has not previously been filled with oil, measure 70mL of SAE 10W/30 oil and pour into the oil reservoir (24) where the dipstick was removed.

4. Clean the dipstick portion of any oil residue and then insert the dipstick fully into the reservoir, however, DO NOT THREAD the dipstick into the reservoir. Hold the dipstick in place for a few second and then remove (Fig B).

5. Check the oil mark on the dipstick (24). If the oil level is near or below the lower limit mark on the dipstick (Fig C), oil should be added in small increments, into the oil reservoir, and repeat steps 3,4 & 5 until it is up to the bottom edge of the oil reservoir (Fig D). Be careful not to overfill or add oil past the bottom edge of the oil reservoir.

6. IMPORTANT: The motor should NEVER be started if the oil level is below the low oil mark.

Always check the oil level before starting ensuring the brushcutter / line trimmer is positioned as per step 1 for checking.

7. When the oil level is at the upper oil level mark; the bottom edge of the oil reservoir (Fig D), replace the dipstick and thread in the dipstick in a clockwise direction until the dipstick is firmly in place. The Sealing O ring on the shoulder of the dipstick should be fully compressed when the dipstick is firmly hand tightened.

Tips for Operation

Always use the double shoulder strap harness (31) when using the brushcutter to avoid serious personal injury.

Hold the brushcutter with one hand on the trigger handle and the other hand on the J handle (12). Keep a firm grip with both hands while in operation. The brushcutter should be held at a comfortable position with the double shoulder strap attachment point (38) about hip height.

Maintain your grip and balance on both feet. Position yourself so that you will not be drawn off balance by the kick-back reaction of the 3T brushcutter blade (28).

Exercise extreme caution when using the 3T brushcutter blade (28) with this unit. Blade thrust is the reaction which may occur when the spinning

3T brushcutter blade (28) contacts anything it cannot cut. This contact may cause the 3T brushcutter blade (28) to stop for an instant, and suddenly

“thrust” the unit away from the object that was hit.

This reaction can be violent enough to cause the operator to lose control of the unit. Blade thrust may occur without warning if the blade snags, stalls or binds. This is more then likely to occur in areas where it is difficult to see the material being cut.

For cutting ease and safety, approach the weeds being cut from the right to the left. In the event that an unexpected object or woody stock is encountered, this could cause the blade thrust reaction.

Specific Assembly for use as a Line Trimmer

Fitting the Clip-on Guard Attachment to the Line trimmer

NOTE: Always ensure the engine is turned off before undertaking this task.

Always use the double shoulder strap harness (31) when using the line trimmer to avoid serious personal injury.

If replacing just the spool line on the supplied spool and line assembly, refer to the instructions following this section.

Changing the line only on the Spool and Line Assembly

NOTE: Always ensure the engine is turned off before undertaking this assembly.

NOTE: The spool provided on this product is a rapid or easy wind type spool.

There is no disassembly of the spool components. The following steps will guide you through the process.

NOTE: The spool & line assembly (35) does not need to be removed from the lower shaft (15) of the line trimmer, however, if it is easier, it can be removed from the lower shaft (15), especially for the first time you re-load / re-wind the line & become familiar with the process.

The line to suit this type of spool assembly is 2.4mm diameter line, with a length not exceeding 2.6m.

1. Remove any existing line protruding from either eyelets in the spool assembly (35). If there is no line left inside the spool, the line can easily be pulled outwards from the eyelets. If the line will not pull out and is jammed, the spool will need to be opened and the jammed line released.

Refer to the section on “Clearing a Jammed Spool” following this section.

2. When looking at the top cover of the spool, there is an arrow on the bump knob (34) pointing outward, and an arrow on the spool cover pointing inwards, with the word “LINE” above the arrow. Whilst holding the spool housing, rotate the bump knob (34) in a clockwise direction (as shown by the rotating arrow on the bump knob) until the two outer arrows line up together (Fig

AO). Depressing the bump knob (34) slightly while rotating can assist in rotating the bump knob (34).

3. Cut a length of 2.4mm diameter nylon line to a length of 2.6m, ensuring the line is cut cleanly. If the first 150mm of line is curved, try and straighten the line as much as possible for entry into the spool.

4. Following the arrow direction on the spool cover, pass one end of the nylon line through the eyelet until it passes through the spool and out through the opposite side (Fig AP). The line should pass through the spool with the first 150mm of line. If it does not pass through the other side within this line length, check the arrows align on the spool cover and the bump knob (34). Also check if there is a curve in the line. A straight section of line is always better than a curved section. Remove the line from the eyelet and retry and change the angle of entry. Slight pressure on the bump knob (34) my also assist, depending on the curve on the line.

AP.

5. Pull the line through the spool so both lengths of line extending from each eyelet are the same length (Fig AQ).

6. Rotate the bump knob in a clockwise direction; also the direction of the rotation arrow on the bump knob (34). As the bump knob (34) is rotated, the line will be evenly be drawn into the spool and evenly wind the line in place.

Continue to wind the line into the spool until approx. 100mm of line extends out from the eyelets (Fig AR).

NOTE: Slight downward pressure on the spool will assist in the rotating action.

7. The spool and line is now ready for use. If the spool & line assembly (35) was removed from the lower shaft (15) for this process, ensure it is correctly fitted as per the instructions on page 24.

Clearing a Jammed Spool

NOTE: Always ensure the engine is turned off before undertaking this assembly.

The spool & line assembly (35) does not need to be removed from the lower shaft (15) of the line trimmer, however, if it is easier, it can be removed from the lower shaft (15) for this process.

In the case where the spool will not feed out line when the bump knob (34) is bumped on the ground at high speed, or the line will not pull through when the line needs replacing, the following process should be followed to open the spool & line assembly (35) to check the lay of the line on the inner spool.

1. To open the spool & line assembly (35), press firmly in the centre of the two securing tabs on each side of the spool assembly (35), one at a time (Fig AS). When pressed firmly, the spool cover can be lifted when released. Remove the top spool cover.

2. Remove the internal spool itself with the jammed line, fully from the spool housing

(Fig AT).

3. Remove all the existing line from the spool completely (Fig AU).

4. Reassemble the spool assembly by firstly centralising the compression spring in the base of the spool housing, then replacing the spool on top of the spring followed by replacing the spool cover on the spool (Fig AV).

NOTE: When replacing the spool cover, ensure the clips of the spool housing align with the spool cover. When the spool cover is located on the spool housing, push down firmly on the cover to ensure the clips have engaged on the cover and the cover cannot pull off.

5. Check the removed line for damages, or use new line. Reload new line onto the spool as per the previous section “Changing the line only on the

Spool and Line Assembly”.

Prior to operating the line trimmer after line has been added, it is suggested to trim the lines so they are even and just short of the cutting blade on the guard. This prevents a possible large section of line being trimmed at high speed.

When you start the line trimmer, bump the head of the spool on the ground to enable the cut off knife on the guard to cut the line to the required length for use.

Tips for operating the Line Trimmer

IMPORTANT. Petrol line trimmers transmit vibrations to the operator during use. These vibrations can generate increased fatigue. For this reason, we recommend taking regular breaks during work. We also recommend taking a break after a few hours of work to rest the engine. If abnormal noise or vibration occurs during operation, turn the line trimmer off immediately and have the problem corrected.

Keep a firm grip on the trimmer with both hands while in operation.

The trimmer should be held at a comfortable position with the rear handle about hip height.

Always operate the trimmer at full throttle. Cut tall grass from the top down to prevent grass from wrapping around the spool which may cause the trimmer to overheat.

NOTE: If grass becomes wrapped around the spool, stop the engine, disconnect the spark plug wire, and remove the grass.

Tips for cutting

WARNING.

Beware of bystanders at all times

• Cut the grass like you are in a corridor about 1.5m wide.

Move step by step, moving the machine from left to right and vice-versa.

Make sure at each step that you are still well balanced on your feet

• Keep the line trimmer tilted towards the area being cut

• Let the tip of the line do the cutting. Never force the spool into uncut grass.

• Running the line into fences, stone and brick walls, curbs, and wood causes extra line wear, even breakage.

• Do NOT run the bump knob (34) on the ground during the cutting process. The bump knob (34) should only touch the ground when the bump knob (34) is tapped on the ground to extend the cutting line.

31cc Brushcutter / Line Trimmer

Feeding the line

The line trimmer has a bump feed mechanism which releases the line without having to stop the engine.

1. To release additional line increase the speed of the motor to no less than half speed, then, lightly tap the bump knob (34) on the ground while operating the unit at high speed.

NOTE: Always keep the line fully extended for optimum cutting performance. Line release becomes more difficult as the cutting line becomes shorter. Cutting efficiency also decreases as the line becomes shorter.

The line will not extend if the speed of the spool is not operating at least half speed. If the line does not extend, increase the speed to full speed while tapping the bump knob on the ground. If the line still does not extend, stop the motor and check the line inside the spool has not tangled and also ensure there is sufficient line in the spool.

2. Each time the head is bumped it releases approximately 2cm of line.

Release the line until it strikes the cut off knife (32). This may require several taps.

NOTE: The cut off knife (32) on the clip-on line trimmer guard attachment

(33) will automatically cut off any excess line. For best results tap the head on hard soil or bare ground. Never bump the spool head on concrete as it may crack the spool housing. Make sure the cut off knife (32) protector has been removed. It is recommended to replace the protector when the line trimmer is not in use.

IMPORTANT. Do not hit stones (even small ones), piles of earth, and small pieces of wood or anything else that could be hidden or poorly visible in the grass. If you hit a large object by accident, or if you jam the cutting tool due to overloading or having the cutter jammed with grass, you must stop the engine.

NOTE: All protective devices of the machine as well as protective equipment must be maintained in good operation condition during the period of use.

NOTE: If the line is too short you may not be able to advance the line by tapping it on the ground. If this is the case, stop the engine and manually advance the line.

Storage and maintenance after use

• When you finish working, clean the unit completely, making sure there is no grass or dirt wrapped in the cutting tools, and put it back into its package in order to avoid its hurting you or other people during transport.

• Be aware to not hit or cut the fuel tank while you put it onto the ground.

Do not let the unit fall down to the floor or it may damage the machine.

• Store the unit away from direct sunlight.

• Do not store in a nylon bag as this can encourage the formation of mould.

• At the end of the season, give the unit an overall cleaning and a thorough check.

• Do not leave the unit resting on the floor for extended periods as it could cause the shape of the guard to alter, posing a safety risk. Hang it off the floor by the top handgrip.

Whenever the machine is not used for a long period of time, proceed as follows:

• Empty the fuel and oil tank completely.

NOTE: If you remove the oil from the oil reservoir (24), ensure to apply a label on the product to remind you the oil has been drained from the motor. Failure to refill the oil reservoir (24) will result in damage to the motor if the unit is operated. Damage to the motor under these conditions is not covered under warranty.

• Protect all metal engine parts from corrosion by coating them with oil.

• Remove the spark plug, put a few drops of oil into the cylinder and then pull the recoil starter 2 to 3 times in order to distribute the oil evenly.

Replace the spark plug.

Environmental protection

Recycle unwanted materials instead of disposing of them as waste.

All tools, hoses and packaging should be sorted, taken to the local recycling centre and disposed of in an environmentally safe way.

Dispose of used motor oil in a manner that is compatible with the environment. We suggest you take it in a sealed container to your local service station for reclamation. Do not throw it in the trash or pour it into the earth.

Power loss or sudden stopping of the engine

Possible Cause

Fuel Tank (6) is empty

Bad quality cut from the line trimmer

The mixture does not reach the carburettor.

There is water in the mixture.

The air filter (40) is dirty.

There are carbon deposits in the cylinder exhaust pipe or the muffler.

Flooded engine.

Choke lever (22) has been moved.

Overloaded cutting due to too high grass or too thick for engine power.

Solution

Check whether the fuel tank (6) is empty and refuel if required.

NOTE: If the trimmer is being used a lot on its side, the tank may require a minimum of

1/4 tank of fuel.

Clean the fuel filter in the fuel tank (6).

Drain and rinse the fuel system.

Refill the fuel tank (6) with new uncontaminated fuel.

Clean the air filter (40).

Clean or change the muffler.

Line tangled on spool.

Check choke lever (22) position.

Check the fuel.

Check oil reservoir (24) level.

Check spark plug (1).

The Blade is not securely fitted.

The blade only rotates on run down of the motor. i.e 5 seconds.

At idle the 3T brushcutter blade

(28) is rotating under power from the motor.

Clean the material from the spool and line.

Manually advance the lines.

Open the spool and line assembly (35) and ensure the lines have not crossed or tangled.

NOTE: Always ensure the engine is turned off before undertaking this task.

Lubricate with silicone spray.

Manually advance the lines.

NOTE: Always ensure the engine is turned off before undertaking this task.

Install more line.

NOTE: Always ensure the engine is turned off before undertaking this task.

Pull lines while alternately pressing down on and releasing bump knob (34).
