If you must use an extension cord, the minimum wire size for a 25" cord (or less) is 18 AWG. NOTE: The smaller the AWG number, the larger the current handling capacity. For longer extension cords, consult a local electrician.

NAME PLATE LOCATION: The name plate is located on the player side of the product. The model number, serial number, power requirements, etc., are located on this plate. You should record the model number, serial number, and the date of purchase in the spaces provided below and retain this manual as a permanent record of your purchase.

This product should be used only with the components supplied or a cart, rack, or stand that is recommended by Yamaha. If a cart, etc., is used, please observe all safety markings and instructions that accompany the accessory product.

PRECAUTIONS

PLEASE READ CAREFULLY BEFORE PROCEEDING

Please keep this manual in a safe and handy place for future reference.

WARNING

Always follow the basic precautions listed below to avoid the possibility of serious injury or even death from electrical shock, short-circuiting, damages, fire or other hazards. These precautions include, but are not limited to, the following:

Assembly

• Assembling/disassembling the rack and/or mounting/removing the instrument should always be done on a floor that is flat and stable. Doing so on an unstable, sloped, or stepped surface can result in the instrument falling over.

• When adjusting the height with percussion instruments other than the vibes (cymbals, snare, etc.) attached to the rack, remove the instruments before adjusting, then reattach after adjustment is complete. Adjusting height with the instruments on the rack can result in pinched fingers, hands, etc., causing injury.

Do not open

• Do not dismantle or modify the vibraphone’s controller or driver. Doing so can cause fire or electrical shock.

• Repairs or part replacement should not be attempted unless instructions are provided in the manual.

Power supply/AC power adaptor

• When using the AC adaptor, do not excessively bend the power cord or place heavy objects on the cord. Doing so may damage the cord causing fire or electrical shock.

• Never put foreign objects (combustible objects, coins, wire, etc.) or liquids (water, juice, etc.) in the drive unit.

Doing so can cause fire and electric shock.

• If one of the following occurs, turn off the power, unplug the AC adaptor and request repair as soon as possible.

- If the AC adaptor or power cord becomes damaged.

- If foreign objects or liquids have gotten into the drive unit.

- If the drive unit gets wet (rain, etc.).

- If the drive unit operates abnormally or is broken.

Handling caution

• Never place your hands or feet where they can get pinched, etc., in moving parts such as under the casters or pedal. In addition to becoming pinched, doing so can cause serious injury.

• Never touch the rotating fans. Doing so can result in pinched fingers, etc.

• Do not use or store the instrument in any of the following locations. Doing so can cause fire or electrical shock.

- In places subject to high temperatures (near a heating device or in direct sunlight, etc.).

- In places where the instrument may be exposed to moisture (bathroom, on wet floors, etc.) and excessive humidity.

- In places where the instrument may be exposed to rain.

- In places with excessive dust.

- In places subject to vibrations.

• Do not play or roughhouse around the instrument.

Bumping into the instrument can cause injury. It can also cause the instrument to overturn. Do not allow children to play around the instrument.

• Do not lean against or climb onto the instrument. Doing so can cause the instrument to overturn, resulting in serious injury.

Transporting/Placing

• Always engage the two caster brakes whenever the instrument is not being moved. Not doing so can result in the instrument falling over or moving, causing injury.

• Never place the instrument on a sloping or unstable sur face or platform, etc. Doing so can cause the instrument to fall over, resulting in injury.

• When moving the instrument on its casters, only move across smooth, flat surfaces. Hold the instrument by its side frames and push forward slowly.

When moving the instrument on its casters:

1. Avoid moving the instrument on surfaces that are sloped or uneven. The instrument can overturn, run out of control, and be a danger.

2. Never run with the instrument. The instrument may become impossible to control and crash into a wall causing serious injury.

• If the instrument must be lifted or carried, do so with two or more people using both hands to lift it by the side frames.

CAUTION

Always follow the basic precautions listed below to avoid the possibility of physical injury to you or others, or damage to the instrument or other property. These precautions include, but are not limited to, the following:

Assembly

• Always follow the instructions provided in this manual when assembling/disassembling the rack and/or mounting/removing the instrument. Not following the pro cedures can result in parts falling off, etc., creating a danger while working with the instrument. It may also degrade function and cause noise.

• Never mount an instrument using a clamp that does not fit the rack pipe size. Doing so can create a danger and cause the instrument to fall off.

• Never loosen the slide guide fixing screws when the legs are not attached to the rack. The side frame can sud denly rise up from the frame creating a danger that could cause injury or damage.

• Tighten bolts securely after determining the desired height. Using the instrument with loose bolts can result in the instrument collapsing, noise, or other troubles.

Tighten the bolts occasionally.

Power supply/AC power adaptor

• Never pull on the cord when disconnecting the AC adap tor from the outlet. Always hold the AC adaptor when connecting or disconnecting the power.

• Always disconnect the AC adaptor from the outlet when the instrument is not used for any extended period of time.

• Always use an AC adaptor that meets Yamaha specifica tions. The use of any other AC adaptor may cause dam age.

Handling caution

• Never place an object on top of the instrument. Doing so can damage the tone bars and frame.

• Never use the instrument in an environment that lacks ventilation.

• Never use the mallets for anything other than playing the instrument. Doing so can result in injury or accidents. Do not allow children to use the mallets in any way that may pose a danger to themselves or others.

• Never use glockenspiel mallets or other hard objects on the instrument. Doing so can dent and scratch the tone bars and damage the tuning.

• Do not use the controller or driver in a rough manner.

Doing so can damage the internal circuitry.

• Clean tone bars with a soft, dry cloth or silicon cloth. For hard to remove stains, use a cloth moistened with small amount of ethyl alcohol. Never use thinner, benzene or a wet cloth on the instrument. Doing so can damage the coating on the sound bars and damage the instrument.

• Please consult the dealer from whom you purchased the instrument when replacing parts. Switches, controls, ter minals, and other such parts are considered consumable components that will deteriorate with use. Deterioration is impossible to avoid, and the amount and rate of deteri oration will vary according to usage and the environment in which the instrument is used.

Transport /Placing

• Always disconnect the power cord when moving the in strument. Not doing so can damage the cord, or persons can trip and fall.

• Always release the caster brakes when moving. Also, slightly lift the instrument when moving across uneven surfaces to move the instrument in a stable manner.

• If the instrument is to be transported in a vehicle, com pletely disassemble the instrument and rack, and pack securely. Moving the instrument as is may result in dam age. To disassemble the instrument, reverse the order of the assembly instructions.

• Move the instrument gently so as not to shock the instru ment. Not doing so may damage the instrument.

• Height adjustment should always be done with at least two persons. If doing it alone is unavoidable, adjust the height two units on the slide guide at a time.

• Frequently moving the instrument can loosen parts and bolts. Always check for loose bolts/parts after moving and tighten if needed.

• Lock the brakes on the casters when the instrument is not in use.

Yamaha cannot be held responsible for damage caused by improper use or modifications to the instrument.

Always turn the power off when the instrument is not in use.

Make sure to discard used batteries according to local regulations.

Precautions for Handling Gas Spring

Please observe the following instructions for proper handling of the gas spring.

1. Precautions for handling the gas spring Caution

This gas spring requires no oil supply to its sliding section. Additional oil will reduce the sealing durability and cause the oil to leak.

Never apply any impact to the gas spring. It will cause oil leakage, malfunction or breakage.

Never disassemble the gas spring. As a high pressure gas is sealed in it, disassembling it will cause a high risk.

The gas spring is not rigid enough to prevent bending due to unbalanced loads. Do not attempt to bend it. A poorly balanced load will cause the rod to bend, resulting in defective operation.

Note that a nick in the piston rod or cylinder will shorten the service life of the seal or result in defective operation. Do not hit the piston rod or cylinder.

Do not expose the gas spring to an excessively high or low temperature. The allowable temperature range for use is -20°C to 50°C.

Avoid using the instrument where it is exposed to to rain, water or much dust. It will cause malfunction.

Do not apply an excessive force to lift the frame end and pull off the gas spring from the leg. It will cause malfunction or breakage.

● Do not apply a high tensile load to the gas spring as it will cause damage to the gas spring.

● In the event of a failure, stop using the instrument and contact the shop of its pur

chase. If your dealer is unable to assist you, please contact Yamaha directly.

2. Instructions for discarding the gas Danger

Make sure to observe the following instructions when discarding the gas spring.

As pressurized nitrogen gas is sealed in the gas spring, be sure to release before discarding it, or an explosion may occur, causing an injury.

Do not crash.

Do not cut.

Do not make a hole anywhere other than the specified positions ( q and w in the Fig.1).

Do not throw it in the fire.

1. Put the gas spring in a plastic bag. Using a drill of 2 to 3 mm, make a hole q

from outside of the plastic bag at the position as specified in the figure to release the gas and oil and then make a hole w

(Be sure to make holes in the order of q and w . )

2. If a vinyl bag is not used, the oil and drill chips will spread. (In such a case, wear eye protection glasses. )

1.

Place the bass side leg section on a rug or other soft material spread on the floor with the hole for the pedal stay facing up.

2.

Insert the pedal stay all the way into the hole on the bass side leg base plate so the notch aligns with the wing bolt, then tighten the wing bolt se curely.

* Please note the orientation of the pedal stay when attaching. Make sure that the stay is attached with the bolt heads connecting the reinforcement stay to the pedal stay facing the audience. (See the figure above.)

3. Remove the wing nut, spring washer, and washer from the bolt located on the center rail of the bass side leg, and slide the slotted end of the reinforce ment stay onto the bolt, then secure the stay with the washer, spring washer, and wing nut.

4. Position the bass side leg section upright, and lock the caster brake.

5. In the same manner, connect the pedal stay and re inforcement stay to the treble side leg section.

Loosen the clamp screws on both ends of the rack pipe and fasten the clamps onto the poles on the upper leg section.

The rack pipe can be attached so its clamp side is either on the audience side or the player’s side of the pole. Decide how much space you need between the rack pipe and tone bars and attach the rack pipe accordingly.

7. Attach the instrument to the rack.

Position the instrument on the rack with the bolt holes ( A ) located on the side plate of the instru ment aligned with the holes ( B ) on the rack side frame.

Using the washers, spring washers, and knob head bolts supplied with the rack, attach the in strument to the rack from the underside of the rack (four locations).

CAUTION

Take care not to pinch your fingers when plac ing the instrument onto the rack.

8. Attach the pedal rod to the instrument.

1. Loosen the center rod fixing bolts to extend the center rod.

2. Connect the center rod with the fitting of the rod connector by firmly holding the center rod while turning the rod connector.

3. Tighten the rod connector until it stops, and then secure with the lock nut.

9.

Attach the resonators.

Insert the resonators from underneath the frame and rest the treble side and then the bass side onto the resonator holders (rubber).

* Make sure not to confuse the natural tone side and accidental tone side resonators.

* Take care not to bump the resonators against the legs etc.

Loosen the two wing bolts located underneath the treble side of the instrument.

Slide the fittings moved in step 10-1 back in the direction of the treble side. Engage the two side mounts on the driver securely with the fit tings, and then tighten the fixing bolts to fasten the driver.

* Set the driver so that the pulleys on either side are positioned directly below the fan side pulleys.

Attach the controller.

There are two controller mounting pins located on the player’s side of the treble end of the instrument.

Align the two holes in the controller mounts with these pins and hook the controller onto the pins one side at a time.

Connect the driver with the controller.

Connect the MOTOR IN terminal of the driver with the MOTOR OUT terminal of the controller using the supplied 8P DIN cable*. To connect, align the arrow mark ( ) on the plug with the screw next to the jack.

* In case the 8P DIN cable is misplaced, the following spare part may be ordered:

Attach the round belt (fan belt)*.

Slip the round belt (fan belt) over the fan side pulley first, and then pull it over the flange of the driver pulley.

* Note For Service Personnel

If the belt cannot be mounted because the dis tance between the pulleys is too wide, or the belt slips due to a too narrow pulley distance, loosen the two driver positioning screws (see illustration to the right) to adjust the pulley distance (belt tension). Tighten the screws se curely after adjustment.

* In case the belt is misplaced or worn, the following spare part may be ordered:

14. Pedal Stroke Adjustment

Loosen the center rod fixing bolts (refer to page 7) to adjust the protruding length of the center rod to the desired pedal stroke, and retighten the bolts.

The recommended stroke (distance between ped al and floor) is 9/16" to 13/16" (1.5 to 2 cm).

15. Tone Bar Height Adjustment

CAUTION

Never loosen the slide guide fixing bolts without the tone bars attached to the rack frame or on the legs when not attached to the rack.

CAUTION

When adjusting the height of the playing surface, make sure that adjustment is carried out by at least two people. If a single person must unavoidably carry out adjustment, do not move the guides any more than 2 slide guide memory positions at a time.

1. Loosen the slide leg fixing bolts while support ing both the bass and treble side frames by hand.

2.

Gas springs in the rack slide guides will cause the instrument to rise automatically. After ad justing the instrument to the required height, tighten the fixing bolts firmly. Use the guides on the slide guides to adjust the playing surface so it is parallel to the floor.

After assembly, confirm that each bolt is tightened securely.

Then, follow the instructions on the next page and connect the power supply to the controller power jack (DC 12-15V IN).
