Exter nal Device
To sy nch ro n ize the SG 502 with an external oscillator,

app roximately 5 V rms (w hen the frequencies diffe r by
5ο/ο).
App roximately α 1 V ρ-ρ si ne wave at the oscillator

Introdu ctio n
B uffer Amplifier
This sectio n of the manual co ntains α description of the
circuitry used i n the SG 502 Oscillator individu al d escriptions are se parated i nto the following parts: Sy nc Input,
Oscillator Amplifier, Automatic Gain Control, F requency
Control, B uffer Am plife r, Attenu ator, Squ are-Wave Output, and Power Supply. R efer to the ap pro p riate diag rams
in t he Diagrams sectio n of th is manual while readi ng the
circ uit d escription .
The bu ffer am plifier (Q120, Q128, and Q130) provides
isolatio n between t he oscillator am plifier and t he output
circuitry. 0120 and Q128 fo rm α differe ntial am plifier
su pp lie d by α consta nt c urre nt source 0130, R130, R132,
and R133. The collector of Q120 d rives the base of Q140,
cascoded with Q145 . The collector of Q145 drives Q150
and Q154 in α common emitte r co nfigu ratio n. CR150 and
CR154 pr ovide proper biasi ng . Negative feedb ac k occurs
th roug h C120 . Gain is set b y Gain Adj ust 191 .
Sync In put
The Sy nc I nput signal is app lied to the+si de (Q10A) of
the oscillator am plifier t h ro ug h C10 and R 10 .
Oscillator Amplifier
Dual FET's 010Α a nd Q10B provide d iffe rential
am plification, with Q70, R71, R 73 a n d R75 serving as t h eir
co nstant current source. The FE T's drive differential
transistors Q20 and Q24, with Q30, R32, R35, an d R36
serving as their co nstant cur rent sou rce . Q86 su pp lies
co nstant cu rrent to emitte r-followe r Q80, whic h d rives
outpu t emitte r-followers Q82 and Q88. Positive feedback
fo r oscillatio n occu rs through R117 and C12.
Automatic Gain Cont rol (AGC)
Pea k detecto r Q90 an d FE T Q110 compose an
automatic gain co ntrol circuit. The FET operates as α
va riable resistor in α d ivider co nfiguration composed of
R115 (AGC ad justment), R116, and R 117. The divide r is
co nn ected from the output of the oscillator amplifier to
grou nd , and varies the amou nt of positive feedback.
Voltage at the gate of Q110 is proportional to the peak
si ne-wave am p litude . The shunt ca pacitors provide
smoothi ng at the va rio us frequencies .
Frequency Control
The output from Q82 and Q88 is fed back to the mi nus
input (Q10B) of t h e oscillator am plifier as n egative
feedb ac k through t he b ridged Τ n otch filter. M inim um
voltage transfer occ urs at the output frequency . Adjusti ng
the ganged co ntrols R50A and R50 B (labeled FREQUENCY Hz and located on the front panel) varies the
n otch frequency.
Atte nuator
F our Τ sectio ns, three fixed and one va ria ble, compr ise
the co nstant-impe dance 600 Ω atte nu ator . R160 d etermi nes the in put im pedance . E ac h section except the
va ria ble is switchable in or out to provide atte nuation
steps.
Squa re- Wave Output
The output si ne-wave from the bu ffer am plifier is fe d
d iodes CR195, CR196, C R198, and
C R199, whic h limit the positive and negative excu rsions.
Collecto rs of 0200 and Q210, α d iffe rential am plifier, are
furt her clamped by diodes CR200 and C R202. The out pu t,
at 600 Ω, is ta ken f rom the collecto r of Q220, wh ic h formsa
d iffe rential am plifier with 0230 . Th ei r co nstant cu rrent
source is supplied by Q235, R235, R238, and R240.
P ositive feedbac k from the collecto r of Q230 ensures fast
switching. Diodes CR210 an d C R212 limit the voltage
excursio ns and ensure operation i n t h e non-saturated
mode.

P ower Supply
I nteg rated ci rc u it U 320 provides the regulated do
voltage supply for the ci rcuits. Co nductio n of the se riespass t r a n sistors i n t he mainframe is cont rolled by the
current throug h U320. This cu rrent dete rmi nes t h e voltage
drop ac ross R320 an d R340. Therefore, U 320 ca rries only
part of the necessary cu rrent, with the remainder bei ng
supplied by the se ries-pass transistors. The voltage d ro p

U320 . R348 determines the output voltage, while C322 and
