Alan Alan441 is an 8-channel PMR446 transceiver with a range of up to 5 km. It features a backlit LCD display, adjustable volume, and a battery life of up to 35 hours. The Alan441 also has a VOX (voice-activated transmission) function with 3 sensitivity levels, a Roger beep to confirm the end of transmission, and a scan function to monitor activity on other channels. Additionally, it has a dual watch function to monitor two channels simultaneously and a baby-sitter function to automatically listen for sounds near the transmitter.

To open the battery compartment, hold the unit face down and unhook the battery holder in the lower part of the radio; gently slide the cover towards the bottom of the radio. ALAN 441 accepts 3 x AAA alkaline or rechargeable batteries.
Display lighting: When you press [7], the display lights up for 10 seconds approx.
** Coverage
The maximum range is obtained during use in an open space. The only limitation to maximum possible range are environmental factors such as blockage caused by trees, buildings, or other obstructions. Inside a car or a metallic constructions, the range can be reduced.
And now, let’s communicate!!
1 Turning on
Rotate the ON/OFFVOLUME [1] knob clockwise to turn the unit on. The radio beeps 4 successive times with different tones (may be inhibited). The LCD [3] displays a “self-test” message for 1 second, it will then indicate channel 1.
2 Volume adjustment
To adjust the volume level, hold “MON” [10] button down while rotating the ON-OFF/VOLUME [1] knob until you reach a comfortable listening level. Rotate it clockwise to increase and anti-clockwise to decrease the volume.
Release the “MON” [10] button. Now your Alan 441 is ready to receive and transmit.
3 Channel selection
Select the desired channel and relevant frequency by the UP/DOWN [6] controls.

For maximum speech clarity, hold the radio 4 to 10 cm away from your mouth, keep the PTT button [11] pressed and speak into the unit.
During transmission the display shows . When the Roger beep function is enabled, the radio beeps to confirm to other users that your transmission has finished (see paragraph 15 “Roger Beep” to enable the function).
5 To receive
Simply release the PTT [11] button ( the icon is displayed). When you receive a signal, is displayed.
6 Background noise reduction (Autosquelch)
In your ALAN 441 the background noise reduction device (squelch) is activated by default. Hold MON [10] button down to deactivate it. In this way, even low level signals can be received.
7 Automatic power save
ALAN 441 is supplied with an automatic current economy circuit . If the transceiver receives no signal for 7 se-
conds or longer the “power save function” automatically activates. (“SAVE” blinks on the display). The battery life may increase by up to 50 %.
When the batteries are in need of charging, icon will be displayed [3]: it is necessary to replace the alkaline batteries or recharge the Ni-Cd/NiMH ones.
8 Jack MIC/CHG
External charger jack [13]. We recommend use of the appropriate charger only.
Attention : alkaline batteries cannot be recharged.
9 Keypad lock
Hold [7] button down for longer than 3 seconds: the display will show to confirm activation. PTT [11],
MON [10] and [9] will still be active. Repeat the same procedure to unlock the keypad.
10 Hands-free transmission mode (VOX) / Baby-sitter
ALAN 441 has built-in VOX capability (automatic transmission) settable in 3 positions.
This feature is particularly useful to keep a check of the baby at a distance as you can automatically listen to all sounds or noises close to the transmitter (Baby-sitter).
11 VOX Activation
Hold the [8]button down for longer than 2 secs.
“VOX” will appear on the display to confirm the function is enabled.
Speak into the microphone [5]: transmission will start automatically.
12 VOX sensitivity setting
1) Set the ON/OFF-VOLUME [1] control to OFF position by rotating the knob anti-clockwise.
2) Hold the [9] button down while turning the radio on.

VOX can be adjusted in 3 positions:
• L1: high sensitivity (normal voice with no background noise);
/ [6] buttons.
• L2: medium sensitivity (for slightly noisier areas);
• L3: low sensitivity (useful in very noisy areas or if you talk loudly).
4) Press [7] to confirm.
13 VOX delay adjustment
This option keeps the radio in transmit mode after you stop talking. This delay can be adjusted (if it is set too short
it may cause transmission to stop between some words) and allows you to speak at a steady rate with no loss of transmission.
To enable this feature, press once the

Use again the / [6] keys to select the desired delay:
• d1: short delay • d2: medium delay • d3: long delay
Press the [7] or turn the unit off to store your setting.
14 To disable the VOX mode press the [8] button on the front of the radio for longer than 2 secs.
Other functions
15 ROGER BEEP: end transmission tone
When PTT [11] is released the radio will beep to confirm to other users that your transmission has finished. This feature is disabled by default.
To enable it, follow these steps:
1. Press repeatedly the

17 SCAN and B.SCAN
The SCAN mode monitors the busy channels . It is used to check the traffic radio on the 8 channels before transmitting and allows the unit to stop on a channel that someone is talking on. When the radio stops on a busy channel, the scan will resume after about 5 seconds.
To enable SCAN:
1. Press [8] key . “SCAN” blinks on the display.
2. Hold or [6] controls down to activate scan.
3. To stop the SCAN function, push PTT [11], or [7] or [9].
The B.SCAN
allows the radio to stop on the channels not in use.
It monitors periodically, for 5 secs only, the channels not in use (without carrier).
To activate B.SCAN:
1. Press [8] until “B.SCAN “ flashes on the display.
2. Hold down or [6] to start the scanning mode.
3. To stop the B.SCAN function, push PTT [11], or

This feature allows you to scan 2 channels of your choice. It is useful when you want to keep track of two other people.
To enable it:
1. Turn on the radio.
2. Select by / [6] keys the first channel you want to monitor.
3. Press repeatedly F [8] button until ”DW” blinks on the display.
4. Select the second channel to be scanned by / [6] controls.
Now the radio begins scanning between these 2 channels until activity is heard on either channel. The scanning restarts when the carrier disappears.
To stop Dual Watch, press PTT [11], or

In case your ALAN 441 does not work properly or you want to cancel all the user settings, it is necessary to hold
[8] button down for 2 seconds while switching the unit on.
With this procedure, all the settings made by the constructor are restored.
