GET THE MOST FROM YOUR GASOLINE-POWERED MOWER
IMPORTANT TIPS TO HELP YOUR LAWN MOWER, START FASTER, RUN BETTER AND LAST LONGER
. Use unleaded gasoline: It burns
cleaner and leaves less residue in
the engine. Regular Gasoline can
also be used.
. Drain or “run-out” all gasoline
from the tank at the end of the
season: DO NOT leave gasoline in
your mower when stored for long
periods. It will “gum-up” your
engine. Run engine until the gas
runs out.
. Start each mowing season with
fresh gasoline: DO NOT keep“ old”
gasoline in your gasoline can. If
your gasoline can is starting to rust,
get a new can.
. Change your spark plug every
ely il Dill sag
spring Old, corroded spark plugs
prevents fast starting and smooth
running engines.
. Clean or change your air filter often:
Dirt, along with heat - can harm
your engine — the filter will clog up,
preventing clean air from reaching
your engine. Polyurethane filters
can be washed and relubricated,
. Use SAE 10W30 or SAE 30 oil:
Do not use 10 W40.
. Change oil as recommended:
IMPORTANT - Change oil after
first two (2) hours of use, and then
every 25 hours of use.
. Replace the blade when needed:
You can sharpen the blade — but we
Page 4
do not recommend it. Erosion from
hitting foreign objects can damage
the blade and affect the “lift”. Re
place with one specifically designed
for your mower.
9. At the end of each season, clean
your mower. IMPORTANT - First
disconnect the spark plug wire. If
possible, store in a place that will be
free of moisture where mower will
not rust, for instance, ina basement.
10. Follow the care suggestions in
your owners manual: Read your
manual and keep it in a convenient
place.
11. DONOT put additives in the oil or
gasoline. Do not use gasohol.

ENGINE OPERATION
SERVICE THE FOLLOWING
POINTS BEFORE STARTING
ENGINE
1. Place unit so engine is in a level
position.
2. Remove oil fill plug (figure 5) and
fill crankcase (pour slowly) with
approximately 1 pint of oil to top of
oil fill hole. NOTE: Use a high
quality detergent oil classified
“For service SC, SD, SE, or SF”,
such as SAE 10 W - 30 (SAE 30 is
an acceptable substitute). DO
NOT USE 10W40 OIL. Crank-
case capacity is approximately 21
ounces (1% pints). Crankcase oil
should be changed after first two
(2) hours of operation and every
twenty-five (25) hours thereafter.
3. Replace oil fill plug and tighten
securely.
DANGER:
Never fill the gas tank while
the engine is running or hot.
immediately wipe off any spil-
led gasoline before attempt
ing to start engine.
À caution A
4. Fill gas tank with clean, fresh, lead-
free grade automotive gasoline.
Low-lead or regular gasoline is an
acceptable substitute. Do not use
Ethyl or high octane gasoline or
gasohol. Be certain container is
clean and free from rust or foreign
particles. Never use gasoline that
may be stale from long periods of
storage in the container.
5. Check all nut and bolts to be sure
none are loose.
6. Check to make sure that spark plug
is tightened securely into engine and
that spark plug wire is attached to
spark plug. |
THE ENGINE CONTROL ON THIS MOWER IS INSTALLED TO MINIMIZE THE RISK OF BLADE
CONTACT INJURY AND IS REQUIRED BY FEDERAL REGULATIONS. DO NOT UNDER ANY
CIRCUMSTANCES ATTEMPT TO DEFEAT THE FUNCTION OF THE ENGINE CONTROL.
ZONE START/ENGINE
CONTROL LEVER
CAUTION: The blade turns when the
engine is running.
Your mower is equipped with an opera-
tor zone engine control which requires
the operator to be positioned behind
the mower handle to start and operate
the mower.
The engine control lever must be pulled
up to the handle to start and run the
engine. Releasing the engine control
lever will stop the engine. An internal
engine brake assists the blade in stop-
ping quickly.
When the operator leaves normal
mowing position to remove the grass
TO START ENGINE
Safety precavtions before mowing,
Before using your mower, again refer to
the “Rules for Safe Operation” as
shown on the inside of the front cover of
this manual. Always be careful.
The carburetor on your lawn mower
has been completely adjusted at the
factory.
A DANGER A
Keep hands and feet clear of
cutting blade and all moving
parts.

MAINTENANCE AND STORAGE
INSTRUCTIONS
A WARNING: À
Turn off engine, disconnect
spark plug wire from spark
plug and place wire where it
cannot come in contact with
plug before checking lawn
mower.
@ Check blade at frequent intervals
for proper tightness.
@ Keep all nuts. bolts. and screws
tight to be sure equipment is in safe
working condition.
@ Keep engine free of grass, leaves or
spilled fuel and oil.
CLEANING
A WARNING A
Disconnect spark plug wire
from spark plug and place wire
where it cannot come in con-
tact with plug.
O It is important that your Lawn
Mower be cleaned periodically to

remove grass.
BLADE CARE
A WARNING: A
Disconnect spark plug wire
from spark plug and place wire
where it cannot come in con-
tact with plug.
All Lawn Mower blades must be bal-
anced to run smoothly. Your Lawn

factory. Resharpening is not recom-
meded. Replace worn blade.
REPLACING BLADE
AWARNING A
Disconnect spark plug wire
from spark plug and place
where it cannot come in con-
tact with plug.
Always use original equipment. Donot
use substitutes.
Tum Lawn Mower on its side with
engine carburetor side up. Block blade
with a piece of wood. (See Fig. 9 )
Unscrew blade mounting bolt. A sharp
blow on the wrench with a hammer
may be necessary.
When remounting, blade parts must be
assembled in the exact order as shown.
(See Fig, 10)
Important The cap screw used to
û secure blade to engine is Grade 5 heat
treated. Other type of cap screws
must not be used as replacements.

ER.
Store Lawn Mower in a cool, dry place
when not in use. Do not cover Lawn
Mower with solid plastic sheet. Trap
ping morsture around Lawn Mower
will promote rust and corrosion.
For long term storage and at the end of
each mowing season — prepare for
storage as outlined below:
i. Drain gas tank and carburetor by
allowing engine to run out of
gasolme.
NEVER store the Mower with GAS-
OLINE IN THE TANK inside a
building where fumes may reach an
open flame or spark, Allow the Engine
to Cool before storing in any enclosure.
STORAGE
NOTE: Evaporating gasoline will
leave gum deposits if not drained com-
pletely. These deposits will make fuel
systems moperative, resulting in hard,
or non starting of engine when again
used,
2. Do not save or store gasoline over
winter. Using old gasoline which
has deteriorated from storage will
cause hard starting and affect engine
performance.
3. Clean unit prior to storing for long
periods of time. Refer to CLEAN-
ING on page 6.
4. This is a convenient time to change
oil. Clean oil will prolong the useful
life of your lawn mower.
3. During extended periods of storage
the mower will occupy Less Space if
Handle is Folded. Loosen the Two(2)
Wing Nuts on each side of the Handle-
bar, and let the Top Section fold down
to the rear. Squeeze inward on the
Lower Handiebar and swing forward
over Mower.
Be careful not to“ Pinch or Kink” the
Control Cables.
6. Before using the Mower again,
Check all Lubrication Points, Fill Fuel
Tank and Review Operating Instruc-
tions in the Operator's Manual and the
Engine Manual.
