Abstract The TEA2017 is a controller IC for resonant power supplies that include a PFC. It provides high efficiency at all power levels. Together with the
TEA2095TE dual LLC resonant SR controller, a high performance cost effective resonant power supply can be designed.
Parameter settings in an internal multitimes programmable memory can define operation modes and protections.
For product development, an IC version is available to change settings onthe-fly.
The TEA2017 provides extra functions, like active X-capacitor discharge and external OTP sensing. To provide the correct handling, protections can be configured.
The efficiency at high power levels is above 90 %.
This design example shows a single output with constant voltage (24 V) and constant current (8.33 A) for maximum 200 W output power. The output voltage can be as low as 12 V, even when several LEDs are connected on the output. The constant current can be reduced by 5 A. Changing reference resistors on constant current amplifier can adjust the constant current.

TEA2017 lighting application design example
1 Introduction
WARNING
Lethal voltage and fire ignition hazard
The non-insulated high voltages that are present when operating this product, constitute a risk of electric shock, personal injury, death and/ or ignition of fire. This product is intended for evaluation purposes only.
It shall be operated in a designated test area by personnel qualified according to local requirements and labor laws to work with noninsulated mains voltages and high-voltage circuits. This product shall never be operated unattended.
This user manual describes the TEA2017 200 W lighting application design example.
It provides a functional description, supported with instructions on how to connect the board to obtain the best results and performance.
The TEA2017 is a digital configurable LLC and PFC combo controller for high-efficiency resonant power supplies. It includes the LLC controller functionality and PFC controller.
To optimize the PFC efficiency, the LLC and PFC controllers can be configured to operate in DCM/QR, CCM fixed frequency, or multimode, which supports all operation modes.
The TEA2017 enables building a complete resonant power supply which is easy to design and has a very low component count. The TEA2017 comes in a low profile and narrow body width SO16 package.
The TEA2017 digital architecture is based on a high-speed configurable hardware state machine ensuring very reliable real-time performance. During the power supply development, many operation and protection settings of the LLC and PFC controller can be adjusted by loading new settings into the device to meet specific application requirements. To prevent unauthorized copying of the proprietary TEA2017 configuration content, the configurations can be fully secured.
In contrast to traditional resonant topologies, the TEA2017 shows a very high efficiency at low loads due to the low-power mode. This mode operates in the power region between continuous switching (also called high-power mode) and burst mode. Because the TEA2017 regulates the output voltage of the system via the primary capacitor voltage, it has accurate information about the power delivered to the output. This measured output power defines the mode of operation (burst mode, low-power mode, or high-power mode). The transition levels of the operating modes can be easily programmed into the device.
The device contains a low-voltage and a high-voltage silicon technology for high-voltage start-up, integrated drivers, level shifter, protections, and circuitry assuring zero voltage switching.

5.2 Output voltage and current operating range
The TEA2017 200 W lighting application design example supports fixed constant voltage regulation and fixed constant current regulation. When LEDs are directly attached to the design example, the output voltage can be down to 12 V. The fixed constant current level can be reduced to 5 A by adjusting reference voltage of constant current amplifier.
When a DC-DC converter is connected to this design example for an LED driver, the
24 V output voltage is supported and the maximum 8.33 A output current is supported for
200 W. There is no burst mode operation within the recommended operating range.

The TEA2017 implements PFC soft start. The PFC soft-start function gradually increases the SNSBOOST voltage. Using the PFC soft-start feature prevents overshoots on the

5.3.3 LLC start-up operation
When the SNSBOOST voltage exceeds the LLC brownin level (2.3 V), the LLC gate starts switching. As the PFC reaches the fixed LLC input voltage regardless of the mains voltage, the LLC start-up performance is almost identical. The TEA2017 incorporates a soft-start function for the LLC. During soft start, the peak-to-peak SNSCAP voltage is gradually increased. The output voltage is increased to 24 V within 20 ms.

5.4 PFC normal operation
The TEA2017 PFC incorporates an average mode control. To achieve good power factor and total harmonic distortion performances, the TEA2017 controls the average PFC inductor current as a sinusoidal waveform. To compensate a phase shift between the AC mains voltage and the average inductor current due to AC mains filter capacitors, the
PFC starts switching after a time delay in every mains voltage cycle. As the mains filter capacitor is different to different power levels, this shift factor can be set using MTP.
The minimum and maximum frequency can be set using MTP. In this design example, the maximum frequency is set to 130 kHz. The minimum frequency is set to 40 kHz.
Figure 8 shows PFC operation at maximum nominal power (200 W). The switching
frequencies are 89 kHz at 115 V mains and 124 kHz at 230 V mains.

5.5 LLC normal operation
To support constant current operation for different numbers of LEDs, the lighting application requires a wide output voltage range. The switching frequency is increased as the output voltage is decreased or the output load is decreased. On this design example, the LLC power train is designed to control a maximum switching frequency < 250 kHz.

5.7 Power-off and hold-up time
To measure the hold-up time at the worst condition, the AC mains is removed at zero phase and the output load is the maximum load condition. After the mains voltage is removed, the PFC output voltage decreases. When PFC output voltage has dropped to the LLC brownout level (1.64 V), LLC switching is stopped. So, the output voltage cannot be hold anymore.

5.13 Standby power consumption
The TEA2017 and TEA2095TE can achieve a standby power consumption of < 70 mW as the best result. This design example implements external linear regulators. However, it causes additional power loss.

5.13.1 Design tips for 305 V (AC) maximum mains voltage and its iTHD performance
As the PFC power stage is the boost converter, the PFC output voltage is higher than the maximum peak AC mains voltage. For a 305 V (AC) maximum mains voltage design, it is recommended to set PFC output voltage at higher than 431 V, the peak level of
305 V (AC). The voltage rating of the PFC output capacitor cannot use a 450 V voltage rating, which is the most typical and cost effective rating. So, to keep using 450 V rating capacitor, for some designs the PFC output voltage must be set to 430 V. However, this design causes the THD performance to become poor at 305 V (AC). For when the peak
AC mains voltage is very close to the PFC output voltage or even slightly higher than the
PFC output voltage, the TEA2017 incorporates a function which allows CCM to operate.
This function significantly improves the THD.
shows how this function operates and how much THD performance is improved.

5.14 Design tips for lower standby power achievement
To reduce power loss on the external linear regulator on the secondary side, the value of the bias current resistor (R35 on the schematic) connected to the shunt regulator (U5 on the schematic) must be increased. When the low power consumption shunt regulator is used and R35 is increased to 5.1 kΩ, the power consumption can be lower than 250 mW.
If the supplied current to the shunt regulator is not enough, the linear regulator output voltage becomes unstable, which causes the system to become unstable.
