Foreword

Notes to the operating instructions

The safe operation of the charger requires the application of expertise contained in the present ORIGINAL

OPERATING INSTRUCTIONS. The information is presented in a precise and clear manner. The chapters are arranged by letter and the pages are numbered continuously.

Our chargers are subject to ongoing development. We reserve the right to alter the design, features and technical aspects of the equipment. No guarantee of particular features of the equipment should therefore be assumed from the present operating instructions.

A General

1 Important safety instructions

This charger has been produced in accordance with generally accepted principles and state-of-the-art technology. To ensure sufficient levels of safety for personnel, additional safety instructions are issued.

Sufficient safety when handling the charger is only provided when these instructions are observed.

Serious damage to personnel and property could arise from: u improper use or incorrect operation, u unauthorised opening of the charger, u incorrect installation or improper service or repair work.

All instructions regarding the correct use, residual risk, installation, operation and maintenance contained in these operating instructions must be noted and observed.

Explosion risk when charging unsuitable battery types

Charging a battery that is not suitable for this charger can result in damage to the battery charger and battery. The battery could expand or burst.

u The lead-acid batteries must only be charged with the

Jungheinrich battery charger SLH 300 designed for this

battery, see"Data plate" on page 24.

If any safety-related modifications, damage or other defects to the charger or its operation are discovered, the charger must be taken out of service until it has been repaired.

u Report any defects immediately to Jungheinrich.

u Mark the faulty charger and take it out of service.

u Only return the charger to service once you have identified and rectified the fault.

2 Purpose of Operating Instructions

The aim of these operating instructions is to enable the

SLH 300 charger to be used correctly and safely. The SLH

300 charger will be referred to hereafter as the charger.

The operating instructions must always be available and stored in the vicinity of the charger. The operating instructions must be read and applied by anyone involved in operating the charger, including shipping, assembly and installation, operation, maintenance and disassembly work.

For commercial use, the relevant work safety guidelines, standards or regulations in the place or country of operation must be observed alongside the present operating instructions.

For more detailed information beyond the scope of this operating manual, consult a specialist from the manufacturer or supplier.

All documentation is copyright protected. The transfer or reproduction of documentation, including extracts, as well as the use and dissemination of its content are prohibited unless expressly permitted.

B Security

1 General

The operating instructions are a major component of the charger.

The owner shall ensure that the operating instructions are kept permanently in the vicinity of the charger, and that operating personnel shall be aware of the guidelines mentioned in the instructions.

The owner shall add further instructions regarding national accident prevention and environmental protection regulations to the operating instructions, including information on supervisory and reporting obligations, taking into account particular company practices e.g. in terms of work organization, work processes and the personnel employed.

Apart from the operating instructions and the current accident prevention regulations in force in the country and place of use, generally recognised technical regulations for safe and proper use shall be observed.

2 Personnel Qualification

Only qualified technicians should operate the charger. The levels of responsibility for personnel operating, installing and repairing the charger should be clearly separated.

Qualified personnel in the sense of these basic instructions are people who are familiar with:

– Assembly and installation,

– Commissioning

– Operation

– Decommissioning and disassembly

The charger must only be repaired by qualified and authorized electricians.

The manufacturer does not accept liability for any damage or loss of business arising from the failure to comply with these operating instructions.

2.1 Commercial Use

If the charger is used in a commercial environment, the following also applies:

– The operator must undergo special instruction or training on how to charge lead acid accumulators and how to operate them.

– Only authorised specialist personnel may operate the charger.

3 Correct Use and Application

SLH 300

The charger is designed solely to charge lead-acid batteries. Depending on the preset charging program, only wet cell batteries designed for the charger program or suitably sealed, maintenance-free traction batteries should be charged. The charger is unsuitable – and thus must not be used – for all other accumulators and non-rechargeable batteries.

If required by the owner, the charger can be fitted with a range of different connectors. The owner is obliged,

– only to use connectors with the suitable fuse rating for the charger,

– to avoid connecting unsuitable battery types.

Z The latter could be achieved for example by colour-coding or mechanically coding the connector.

NOTICE

Always observe and comply with the battery manufacturer’s instructions.

CAUTION!

If the charger has a charging program which has been modified, the owner is obliged to provide a permanent indication of the suitable battery type on the housing exterior.

Explosion risk when charging unsuitable battery types

Charging a battery that is not suitable for this charger can result in damage to the battery charger and battery. The battery could expand or burst.

u The lead-acid batteries must only be charged with the

Jungheinrich battery charger SLH 300 designed for this

battery, see"Data plate" on page 24.

All instructions regarding the correct use, residual risk, installation, operation and maintenance contained in these operating instructions must be noted and observed.

The charger must only be used for the applications described in the operating manual and in the technical description and must only be operated with accessories and components recommended and approved by the manufacturer.

Any other use beyond the scope of the above is not appropriate. The owner or user of the charger shall be liable for any damage arising from the above.

4 Troubleshooting and Repairs Safety

Instructions

The charger must only be opened and serviced by

Jungheinrich Customer Services.

Always disconnect the charger from the mains and the battery before carrying out maintenance or repair work.

Wait 5 minutes after disconnecting the charger from the mains and battery before opening the charger housing, to allow the capacitors to discharge.

No safety-relevant changes, additions or removals may be made without the authorisation of the manufacturer. This applies also to the assembly and adjustment of safety mechanisms. In particular, make sure that no clearances or air gaps are reduced.

Spare parts used must meet the technical requirements specified by the manufacturer. This requirement is always guaranteed by using original manufacturer’s spare parts.

C Product Specifications

1 Product Functional Description

The charger SLH 300 is specifically designed for lead-acid batteries in terms of voltage, charge capacity and battery technology and must only be used for these batteries,

see"Data plate" on page 24.

The charge current is dictated by the set characteristic curve, without any communication with the battery.

The charger contains:

– At least one controllable, high-frequency power section

– Microprocessor-controlled charging electronics

– A control and display unit with a Stop/Restart button

The individual charger assemblies are encased in a robust steel sheet housing.

A secure standing leg can also be ordered as an option for the charger.

3 Residual risk

WARNING!

Risk of explosion due to gases released when charging lead-acid batteries

The battery gives off a mixture of oxygen and hydrogen

(oxyhydrogen gas) during charging. Gassing is a chemical process. This gas mixture is highly explosive and must not be ignited.

u Switch the charging station and truck off first before connecting/disconnecting the charging cable of the battery-charging station to/from the battery connector.

u The charger must match the battery in terms of voltage, charge capacity and battery type.

u Before charging, check all cables and plug connections for visible signs of damage.

u Ventilate the room in which the truck is being charged.

u The battery cover must be open and the battery cell surfaces must be exposed during charging to ensure adequate ventilation.

u Do not smoke and avoid naked flames when handling batteries.

u Wherever the truck is parked for charging, there must be no inflammable material or consumables capable of creating sparks within a 2 m area of the truck.

u Fire protection equipment must be available.

u Do not place any metallic objects on the battery.

u Always follow the safety regulations of the battery manufacturer and the charging station manufacturer.

Risk of catching on charger cables!

Charger cables represent a trip hazard. Persons may become entangled in loose, extended cables or trip over them.

There is a risk of personal injury if the charging process is interrupted by disconnecting the charge connector. The sparks that this produces could ignite the charging gases formed during charging, which in turn could cause a fire or trigger an explosion.

u Route the charging cables to prevent anyone from tripping or getting caught on them.

u After charging, wind up the charging cable or place it on the cable holder ( o ).

4 Protective Mechanism

The charger has been designed and constructed in accordance with state-of-the-art technology. If used properly, it therefore poses no danger to the health and safety of those operating it or third parties.

The charger bears the CE mark. The required insulating clearances have been observed. All circuits are fitted with primary and secondary fuses with defined current rating and activation characteristics.

All live assemblies are fitted with housings or panels that can only be undone with tools. All cables and connectors are properly screened or earthed. The charger is constructed according to safety rating IP 20.

All metallic components are earthed via a protective conductor system.

The charger SLH 300 is equipped with redundant safety features to prevent battery overload through automatic cutoff.

5.2.1 Safety Instructions, Warning Indications and other

Notes

The battery charger SLH 300 is rated IP 20 against water ingress and is thus suitable for use in indoor areas. This is indicated by the symbol 5957 in accordance with IEC 60417.

Before commencing work and/or use of the battery charger SLH 300, the operating instructions must be read carefully. Work on the battery in combination with the charger must only be performed after receiving instruction from specialist personnel. The operating instructions must be clearly visible and easily accessible at the charging location. In addition to the operating instructions, all generally applicable and local regulations regarding accident prevention and environmental protection must be observed.

There must be no open flames or sources of ignition in the proximity of the battery or charger and smoking is prohibited.

Ensure that the charging area is well ventilated and do not make contact with the battery acid. Under no circumstance should you break the connection between the battery and charger during the charging process (caution: light arc!). Batteries and chargers should generally be protected against dirt and mechanical damage. Recurring visual inspections must be performed to ensure that the battery acid is filled up to the max. mark. If the battery possesses an irregular acid level or excess water consumption is identified in individual cells, the battery charger must not be started or must be stopped immediately before having the battery inspected by an authorised specialist workshop. Always use protective equipment

(e.g. safety goggles and safety gloves) when working on battery cells and batteries in general. Wash your hands thoroughly when you have finished the work.

Acid splashes must be rinsed off immediately and thoroughly with clear water; consult a doctor in the case of an emergency.

By working with the battery charger in an incorrect manner, you are exposing yourself to numerous risks and hazards, such as the danger posed by mains electricity. Do not sort-circuit charger or battery cables. All cables and wires must be sound, undamaged and insulated. Loose connections, singed or damaged cables, wires or contacts must be immediately repaired by an authorised specialist.

Caution! High-performance lithium cells can generate very high short-circuit currents, causing them to become hot. The metal parts of the battery cells are constantly under voltage, so do not place any foreign objects or tools on the battery. Accident prevention regulations and DIN EN 62485-3 must be observed.

The battery charger SLH 300 must be used in the correct, designated manner. Improper use can pose significant dangers. In the case of incorrect or improper use, all product liability is excluded. During the charging process, the battery charger must not be covered with any objects. The charger must only be cleaned with a dry cloth. You must also observe the transport and installation instructions.

Used battery chargers constitute waste requiring special supervision and must be disposed off correctly. This device must not be disposed off with domestic waste. According to the European WEEE

Directive 2012/19/EU regarding waste electrical and electronic equipment and its transposition into national law, electrical and electronic equipment must be collected separately and disposed of in an environmentally friendly manner. Ensure that you return your used battery charger SLH 300 to your retailer or seek information regarding a local, authorised collection and disposal system

D Assembly and Commissioning

1 Assembly and Installation Safety

Instructions

WARNING!

Fire hazard

Inflammable materials must not be located in the immediate vicinity of the battery charger. This includes transport and packaging material delivered with the unit.

u No inflammable material is to be located within 2.5 metres of the battery charger.

The horizontal distance between the charger and inflammable materials must be at least 2.5 m. Do not store inflammable materials, e.g. in racks, or use inflammable materials above the charger. There must be at least a 5 m gap from areas at risk of fire, explosion or explosives.

No liquids must be allowed to penetrate the charger.

The charger must be protected against overload or stress.

In particular, no components must be damaged during transport and when being handled. Avoid contact with electronic components.

Electrical components must not be physically damaged or destroyed.

Electrical installation (wire cross sections, fuses, earth leads) must be performed in accordance with current regulations.

Before carrying out the electrical installation compare the performance data on the data plate with the performance data of the power supply connections. The charger must be protected against overload by means of a mains fuse connected in series. Observe the mains connection data on the data plate (voltage and frequency).

Activities to be carried out before assembly or installation of the battery charger

Procedure

• Remove packaging material (film or cardboard).

• If the battery charger was delivered on a transport pallet, lift the battery charger from the transport pallet.

Z This does not apply to pallets on which the battery charger is permanently mounted. These pallets have a fireproof base.

• Packaging material is to be disposed of correctly.

Z In addition to the restrictions listed in the operating instructions, national requirements must be observed when choosing the place of installation.

2 Equipment supplied

NOTICE

Before installing the charger, check that all the components have been supplied against the delivery notes. If anything is missing, contact the manufacturer immediately.

The scope of delivery comprises the following parts as a minimum:

– Charger and pre-set charging program

– Connected mains and charger cables

– Operating instructions

– Delivery note

Depending on the customer’s requirements, the delivery scope and the charger version may deviate from this. The enclosed delivery documents (as well as the order confirmation) contain additional technical specifications.

Procedure

• Check the delivery immediately to make sure it is complete and undamaged.

• Check the delivery note and the data plate to make sure the data match.

• If anything is missing contact the manufacturer and, if necessary, the shipping company immediately.

• Check the charger for loose screw connections etc. Retighten them if necessary.

3 Site Requirements

– The battery charger must only be used in closed rooms with a maximum air humidity of 80 %.

– The ambient temperature at the site must not fall below

5°C or exceed 40°C.

– The site must not contain excessive dust. Prevent conductive dust (soot, metal) from coming into contact with the equipment.

– The charging location must be well ventilated.

4 Charger Assembly / Installation and

Switching the Battery Off

Charger assembly/installation

Requirements

– Maintain a minimum lateral clearance of 0,5 m from the next charger. If you cannot maintain a minimum clearance of 0,5 m to the next charger, the chargers must be repositioned.

– Maintain a minimum lateral clearance of 0,5 m from the nearest wall.

– The lower edge of the display unit must be above the upper edge of the battery.

– The mains power connection must be within range of the battery charger power cable (at least 2 m).

Tools and Material Required

– 2 dowels, 2 countersunk screws (M5).

Procedure

• Fit the battery charger to the wall.

• Ensure the charger is well ventilated.

Z During assembly/installation, ensure that none of the following can penetrate the charger:

– Harmful gases, e.g. acid gases

– Conductive dusts, such as soot or metallic dust

– Excessive amounts of non-conductive dust

– Liquids

5 Mains Connection and Mains Fuses

WARNING!

The charger is an electric component conducting voltages and currents that are hazardous to people.

u The charger must only be operated by trained technicians.

u Disconnect the mains supply and the battery connector where necessary before carrying out any work on the charger.

u The charger should only be opened and serviced by

Jungheinrich Customer Services.

To operate the charger, a mains connection is required at the usage site. The mains voltage and frequency must

match the details on the data plate (see "Charger Labelling and Decals"). The mains connection must be properly

earthed.

The charger must be protected against excessive contact voltage in accordance with the regulations of the local electricity provider.

If the mains cable of the battery charger is damaged, it must be replaced by the manufacturer, its customer service department or a qualified specialist in order to prevent hazards.

Procedure

• Insert the mains fuse according to the following table:

A lack of residual current devices or the use of inappropriate residual current devices can result in dangerous electric shocks or electrical fires in the event of a fault.

u The owner must conduct an operational risk assessment of the usage location.

u An RCD switch (residual current device, circuit breaker) of type B or B+ must be used where necessary.

7 Starting the charger for the first time and operational testing

After assembling and installing the charger correctly, it must be started for the first time for a functional test, see

"Operation ".

E Operation

1 Operating Safety Instructions

WARNING!

Do not use non-rechargeable batteries.

The charger must only be used if it is in technically good working order and when used in accordance with the present operating instructions with attention paid to the safety and hazard risks. Any faults that could affect safety must be reported and rectified immediately.

If any safety-related modifications, damage or other defects to the charger or its operation are discovered, the charger must be taken out of service until it has been repaired.

2 Visual Inspection Before Using the Truck for the First Time

Before every use of the charger, always check that:

– The mains connection is not damaged,

– The housing is not damaged,

– The charging cable and mains connection cable insulation are not damaged,

– The charging connector is not damaged.

5 Starting Charging

The charger is an electric component conducting voltages and currents that are hazardous to people.

u The charger must only be opened and serviced by

5.1 Starting Charging

Requirements

– The battery is now operational. There will be no charge is the battery is not functional or fully discharged.

– The temperature of the charger and the battery must both be within the prescribed limits.

For a trained operator, battery charging generally comprises the following steps:

Procedure

• Check that the charger matches the battery type.

• Check the charger for damage (see "Visual Inspection

Before Using the Truck for the First Time").

• Connect the charger to the mains.

• Connect the battery to the battery charger.

• Charging starts automatically after 3 Sekunden seconds.

• Charging ends automatically upon completion.

• Disconnect the battery from the charger.

7 End of Automatic Charging

Charging ends automatically when the charging program is finished, i.e. the battery is fully charged. The battery can now be used again.

The green LEDs (31 | 32 | 33) light up to indicate that

charging is complete, see page 42.

8 Conservation charging

If the battery remains connected once charging is complete, conservation charging is performed every 8 Stunden hours for 8 Minuten minutes in each case.

The LEDs 1.1 (31), 1.2 (32) and 1.3 (33) flash green while conservation charging is active.

Once conservation charging is complete, LEDs 1.1 (31),

1.2 (32) and 1.3 (33) light up green continuously, see page 42.

9 Manual compensation charging

Compensation charging is a charging process used to equalise the voltage and electrolyte density of the individual battery cells.

Compensation charging must be performed on a fully charged battery.

Requirements

– Manual compensation charging must only be activated/ deactivated when no battery is connected to the battery charger, and the battery is not a lithium-ion battery.

– No faults exist, see page 57.

Procedure

• To activate manual compensation charging, press button

(30) for 1 second.

Manual compensation charging is activated and starts after 2 Stunden hours. LED 3.1 (35) lights up green

(continuous). Once compensation charging commences,

LED 3.1 (35) flashes until the process is completed.

• To deactivate manual compensation charging, press button (30) for 1 second.

Manual compensation charging is deactivated.

10 Start delay

Start delay mode can be used to set the start time of the charging process.

Activating start delay

Requirements

– The start delay function must only be activated when no battery is connected to the charger.

– The battery charger is not in any other mode.

– No faults exist, see page 57.

Procedure

• To activate start delay, press button (29) for 1 second.

Z LED 2.2 (36) flashes green.

• Press the button (29) repeatedly to set a delay of 2 h,

4 h, 6 h, 8 h or no delay time (37).

The selected delay is applied automatically when no further button press takes place. LED 2.2 (36) lights up green (continuous).

• Connect the battery to the battery charger.

LED 2.2 (36) flashes until the start delay time has passed.

Deactivating start delay

Requirements

Procedure

• To deactivate the start delay function, press the Stop/

Restart button (28) for 2 seconds.

The start delay is then considered passed and the charging process starts immediately.

11 User options

Requirements

– User options may only be activated/deactivated when no battery is connected to the battery charger, and the battery is not a lithium-ion battery.

– The battery charger is not in any other mode.

Procedure

• To activate the user options, press the button (39) for

10 seconds.

Z LED 2.1 (34) flashes green.

• The button (39) can be pressed repeatedly to select the desired user option (38).

The selected user option is applied automatically if the button is not pressed for 5 seconds.

Supply

The charger is energised via the mains cable. Disconnect the charger from the mains if:

– The charger is not permanently required,

– The charger electronic system is to be reset to the starting condition (reset), e.g. if a fault is displayed.

WARNING!

The operating conditions of a charger have a considerable impact on the wear of the service components. The air vents must be checked on an annual basis to ensure they are free of dust.

u The intervals must be reduced accordingly if the charger is used in very dusty conditions or subjected to extreme temperature fluctuations. If in doubt, contact the relevant specialists.

Z Remove any dust or dirt on the charger with a dry cloth.

WARNING!

Any damage and other defects to the charger can result in accidents.

If any safety-related modifications, damage or other defects are discovered on the charger or during operation, the charger must be taken out of service until it has been repaired.

u Report any defects immediately to your supervisor.

u Tag out and decommission a faulty charger.

u Only return the charger to service when you have identified and rectified the fault.

– The housing is not damaged,

– The mains connector insulation is not damaged,

– All screw connections are tight.

Spare parts can be obtained from the manufacturer or supplier. Have the charge details from the data plate to hand when ordering spare parts.

G Disposal

NOTICE u Battery chargers must be collected separately from domestic and commercial waste and either recycled or disposed of in the correct manner.

u Old chargers must be dealt with by your company’s disposal department (if available), who will arrange to have it removed by special disposal companies.

u As a rule, it is also possible to return the old charger to the manufacturer. In this case, you should contact the manufacturer’s customer service department. Any special arrangements must be observed.

According to the European WEEE Directive (2012/19/EU), electric and electronic equipment must be collected separately from municipal waste and either recycled or disposed of in the correct manner. This is because hazardous substances can cause lasting damage to personal health and the environment if disposed of in an incorrect manner.

For further information, contact the specialist disposal companies or relevant local authorities.

Dispose of the charger's packaging separately. Paper, cardboard and plastic should be recycled.
