Frequently asked questions

The Advanced SCATterometer (ASCAT) is an instrument carried on-board the Meteorological Operational (MetOp) polar satellites launched by the European Space Agency (ESA) and operated by EUMETSAT. It's a real aperture radar using vertically polarised antennas to generate radar beams.

The CMOD5.5 geophysical model function (GMF) is used for the OSI SAF and EARS ASCAT wind products.

The ASCAT BUFR L2 products are disseminated on EUMETCast. The products are also made available on a password-protected ftp site.

The performance of the products issued by the OSI SAF and EARS is characterised by a wind component RMS error smaller than 2 m/s and a bias of less than 0.5 m/s in wind speed.

User requests on the OSI SAF data products should be issued at the Ocean and Sea Ice SAF website (http://www.osi-saf.org/).
