SAFETY WARNINGS
FOR PROFESSIONAL USE ONLY.
OBSERVE ALL WARNINGS.
Read And Understand All Instruction Manuals Before Operating Equipment.
EQUIPMENT MISUSE HAZARD
General Safety
Any misuse of the equipment or accessories, such as overpressurizing, modifying parts, using incompatible chemicals and fluids, or using worn or damaged parts, can cause them to rupture and result in serious bodily injury, including eye injury, or fire, explosion or property damage.
NEVER alter or modify any part of this equipment; doing so could cause it to malfunction.
CHECK all equipment regularly and repair or replace worn or damaged parts immediately.
Take precautions to avoid a toxic fluid spill. See TOXIC FLUID HAZARD, below.
Fluid Compatibility
BE SURE all fluids and solvents used are chemically compatible with the
“Wetted Parts” and “Non–wetted Parts” shown in the TECHNICAL
DATA on the back cover. Always read the fluid and solvent manufacturer’s literature before using them in this pump.
System Pressure
This pump develops 100 psi (7 bar) MAXIMUM WORKING PRESSURE at 100 psi (7 bar) incoming air pressure. NEVER exceed 100 psi (7 bar) air pressure to the pump. DO NOT exceed the maximum working pressure of any component or accessory used in the system.
Pressure Relief Procedure
To reduce the risk of serious bodily injury, including splashing fluid or solvent in the eyes or on the skin, always follow this procedure to relieve all system pressure whenever you shut off the pump, and before checking, adjusting, cleaning or repairing any part of the system.
1.
Shut off the air to the pump
2.
Close the air bleed valve by sliding it all the way down
3.
Hold a metal part of the gun firmly to the side of a grounded metal pail and trigger the gun into the pail to relieve pressure.
4.
Open the drain valve, having a container ready to catch the drainage. Leave the valve open until you are ready to resume spraying.
If you suspect that the fluid nozzle or hose is completely clogged, or that pressure has not been fully relieved after following the steps above,
VERY SLOWLY loosen the hose end coupling and relieve pressure gradually, then loosen completely and clear the nozzle or hose.
TOXIC FLUID HAZARD
Improper handling of toxic fluids or inhaling toxic vapors can cause extremely serious bodily injury, even death, due to splashing in the eyes, ingestion, or bodily contamination. Know what fluid you are pumping and its specific hazards. Store toxic fluid in an appropriate, approved container. Dispose of it according to all Local, State and Federal guidelines for toxic fluids. Be sure to observe all the following precautions when handling known or potentially toxic fluids.
1.
Always wear appropriate clothing and equipment, such as eye protection and breathing apparatus, to protect yourself.
2.
Be sure to pipe and dispose of the exhaust air safely . If the diaphragm fails, the fluid will be exhausted along with the air.
3.
Be sure to secure the fluid outlet hose tightly into the receiving container to prevent it from coming loose and improperly draining the fluid.
FIRE OR EXPLOSION HAZARD
Static electricity is created by the flow of fluid through the pump and hose.
If the equipment is not properly grounded, sparking may occur, and the system may become hazardous. Sparks can ignite fumes from solvents and the fluid being pumped, dust particles and other flammable substances, whether you are pumping indoors or outdoors, and can cause a fire or explosion and serious bodily injury and property damage.
If you experience any static sparking or even a slight shock while using this equipment, STOP PUMPING IMMEDIATELY. Do not use the system again until the problem has been identified and corrected.
Grounding
To reduce the risk of static sparking, ground the pump and all other equipment used or located in the pumping area. CHECK your local electrical code for detailed grounding instructions for your area and type of equipment. GROUND ALL OF THIS EQUIPMENT :
1.
Pump: by connecting a ground wire and clamp as shown in Fig 1.
2.
Air and fluid hoses: use only grounded hoses with a maximum of
500 ft (150 m) combined hose length to ensure grounding continuity.
3.
Air compressor: according to the manufacturer ’s recommendations.
4.
All solvent pails used when flushing, according to local code. Use only metal pails, which are conductive. Do not place the pail on a nonconductive surface, such as paper or cardboard, which interrupts the grounding continuity.
5.
Fluid supply container: according to your local code.
To ground the pump: secure a ground wire (W) to the grounding tab (V), using a screw (X), washers (Y) and nut (Z). See Fig 1. Connect the clamp end of the ground wire to a true earth ground.

INSTALLATION
GENERAL INFORMATION
1. The TYPICAL INSTALLATION shown on page 3 is only a guide for selecting and installing system components. Contact your Graco distributor for assistance in planning a system to suit your needs.
2. See pages 14–15 for ACCESSORIES available from
Graco. Always use Genuine Graco Parts and Accessories.
3. Use a compatible, liquid thread sealant on all male threads. Tighten all connections firmly to avoid air or fluid leaks.
CAUTION
Do not overtighten the fittings to the pump, to avoid pump damage.
4. Read this entire manual before installing or operating this system.
GROUNDING
WARNING
This pump must be grounded. The steps for grounding may differ from the way you ground other pumps. Read and carefully follow the text of FIRE
OR EXPLOSION HAZARD on page 2 before operating the pump.
c. Install an air shut–off valve (P) upstream from all air line accessories, to isolate them during cleaning and repair.
d. The air line filter (B) removes harmful dirt and moisture from the compressed air supply . The air line lubricator (R) provides automatic air valve lubrication.
2. Attach a quick disconnect coupler (N) to the end of the air hose, but do not connect the coupler to the system air inlet fitting yet.
3. Install a fluid drain valve (F) near the fluid outlet. See the WARNING to the left, and refer to the Typical Installation.
4. For additional information on fluid accessories available from Graco, refer to “Fluid Regulation, Circu-
lation, and Agitation Accessories” on page 6.
MODEL 222–677 BASIC SYSTEM
1. Make certain that the wall is strong enough to support the weight of the pump, all accessories, and the stress caused by pump operation. Drill four holes in the wall as shown in the Wall Mounting Diagram on page 15. Secure the wall bracket (48) with screws.
2. Connect the hoses, gun, and air and fluid accessories as shown in the Typical Installation.
SYSTEM ACCESSORIES
WARNING
A bleed–type master air valve (E) is supplied in your system to relieve air trapped between this valve and the pump after the pump air regulator (C) is closed.
Trapped air can cause the pump to cycle unexpectedly, which could result in serious bodily injury , including splashing in the eyes, injury from moving parts, or contamination from hazardous fluids.
A fluid drain valve is also required. Install a drain valve (F) and tee close to the pump’s fluid outlet to relieve pressure in the hose if the hose becomes plugged. The drain valve reduces the risk of serious bodily injury, including splashing in the eyes or on the skin, or contamination from hazardous fluids.
1. Install the air line accessories as shown in the Typical
Installation. Mount these accessories on the wall or on a bracket.
a. Install a flexible, grounded air hose between the accessories and the system’s air inlet. The hose
must have a ground wire which can be attached to the pump grounding strap. Use a minimum
1/4” ID air hose. The recommended Graco grounded air hose 221–169 contains a wire which must be attached to the pump’s grounding strip; use of a grounded hose without attaching the wire to the pump may not ground the pump.
b. To control the pump speed, adjust the pump air regulator (C). The pump speed may also be controlled on the fluid return line of a circulating system with a back pressure regulator or needle control valve (see “Fluid Regulation, Circula-
tion, and Agitation Accessories” on page 6).
4 307974C

OPERATION
Flush the Pump
The pump was tested in water and rust–inhibitor solution. If the solution could contaminate the fluid you are pumping, flush it thoroughly with a compatible solvent.
Follow the procedure under To Flush the Pump, at the right.
Starting and Adjusting the Pump
1. Be sure the pump is properly grounded. Read and follow FIRE OR EXPLOSION HAZARD, on page 2.
2. Check all fittings to be sure they are tight. Be sure to use a compatible liquid thread sealant on all male threads, and do not overtighten the fittings into the pump.
3. Place the suction tube in the fluid to be pumped.
NOTE: If the inlet pressure to the pump is more than
25% of the outlet working pressure, the ball check valves will not close fast enough, resulting in inefficient pump operation.
4. Close the fluid drain valve.
5. See Fig 4. Close both air regulators (C and D). Close the bleed–type master air valve (15) by sliding it all the way down.
6. Connect the air line coupler to the air inlet fitting (16).
7. Open the gun air regulator (D). Trigger the air spray gun (108) while continuing with the following steps.
8. Open the bleed–type master air valve (15) by sliding it all the way up. Slowly open the pump air regulator
(C) until the pump starts to cycle. Allow the pump to cycle slowly until all air is pushed out of the lines and the pump is primed.
9. Adjust the fluid regulator (105) to the desired fluid pressure, typically 10–30 psi (0.7–2.1 bar), depending on the fluid viscosity.
10. Set the pump air regulator (C) to a level 30–40 psi
(2.1–2.8 bar) higher than the regulated fluid pressure. This setting will provide the smoothest flow.
11. Release the gun trigger.
12.
In a circulating system, adjust the needle–type fluid control or back pressure regulator to the desired pump speed, to provide agitation of the supply fluid.
Typically, the pump speed is set at 20–40 cycles/min.
13. Trigger the gun again to recheck the regulated fluid pressure.
14. Adjust the gun air regulator (D) until the desired spray pattern is achieved.
To Flush the Pump
1. Place the suction tube (110) in the solvent. Run the pump long enough to thoroughly clean the pump and hoses. Close the pump air regulator (C). Remove the suction hose from the solvent and place it in the fluid to be pumped.
2. To clean the gun’s air cap and nozzle, first follow the
Pressure Relief Procedure on page 2. Unscrew the air cap from the gun. Clean the air cap and fluid nozzle as described in the separate gun manual.
Shutdown
Remove the suction hose from the fluid container and run the pump until the fluid is forced out of the system. Then shut off the air supply immediately.
