Note to Windows XP Users Only
Windows XP provides a built-in Wireless Zero Configuration Utility for configuring and monitoring wireless devices on your computer. When it is enabled, it will override the Wireless Configuration Utility. To disable the
Windows XP Wireless Zero Configuration Utility and have the Wireless
Configuration Utility manage your USB adapter, perform the following steps:
Step 1 Double-click the Windows XP network icon and click Advanced (or
Properties ).
Step 2 On the Wireless Networks tab, uncheck the Use Windows to configure my wireless network settings box and click OK . This will restore the management function to the Wireless Configuration Utility.
Basic Configurations
Select the Monitor tab in the Wireless Configuration Utility to set your settings. See Fig. 3.2
The current settings are grayed out. To change the settings click
Change . After changing the settings, click Submit to activate the new settings.
Operating Mode : There are two operating modes for the Wireless
USB Adapter, Infrastructure mode and Ad-Hoc mode. If you choose
Infrastructure mode, the USB adapter will connect to an access point/ wireless router. If you choose Ad-Hoc mode, the USB adapter will connect to a wireless station directly.
Channel : Displays the channel number that is currently being used by the USB adapter. The channel number can only be set under the Ad-Hoc mode. In Ad-Hoc mode, each client must have the same channel number and SSID in order to connect to each other properly. In Infrastructure mode, the USB adapter will automatically detect and use the channel number provided by the access point/wireless router.
SSID : Enter the SSID of the network you wish to join. The SSID distinguishes one WLAN group from another, so all access points and all devices attempting to connect to a specific WLAN group must use the same SSID.
Fig. 3.2
Once you have configured and submitted your settings, go to the Site Survey
Tab. See Fig. 3.3
Double-click the BSSID of the SSID you wish to connect to.
You should now have connection with the target network.

Enable WEP Encryption (optional)
Enabling WEP Encryption provides security to your wireless connection and prevents unauthorized access to your network.
In order for the encryption to function correctly, both the target access point/wireless client must use the same encryption settings. To enable encryption on the USB adapter, perform the following steps:
Step 1 From the Wireless Configuration Utility , select the Encryption tab.
Step 2 Select either 64 Bit or 128 Bit .
Step 3 Enter the values that you want to use from Key #1 to Key #4. If you select 64 Bit , you must type 10 values ranging from the numbers 0 through
9 and the letters A through F in any combination. If you select 128 Bit , you must type 26 values ranging from the numbers 0 through 9 and the letters A through F in any combination.
Please refer to the following chart for some examples:
Key Length
64 Bit
128 Bit
Values (Examples Only)
1A2BCD98EF
12345678901234567890ABCDEF
Step 4 Select the WEP key that you want to use for encryption.
Step 5 Select the Authentication Type :
Open System : If your target wireless network uses Open System (Open
Key), your authentication request will always be accepted regardless or your WEP keys. You are allowed to join the network as long as you have the same SSID as the target wireless network.
Shared Key : If your target wireless network uses Shared Key, your wireless adapter must be set to use the correct WEP key to pass the authentication. You must use the identical WEP key as the target wireless network to obtain connection.
Step 6 Click Submit to save and activate the settings.
Note : When setting WEP keys for data encryption, all the wireless clients and/or access points must use the same encryption key values.
For example, if you use Key 1 on your USB adapter and assigned a certain value to it, then the same value must be assigned to Key 1 for all the clients and/or access points in your wireless network.
For more advanced features and additional details, please refer to the User’s Manual on the provided CD-ROM.
