Creating a Keyword

Series Recording

Request

If you would like Passport Echo to locate and record all programs related to a particular topic of interest, you can create a keyword series recording request.

Keywords can refer to a particular subject matter, or to the names of actors or directors, etc.

For example, if you are interested in the guitar, you could create a keyword series recording request for “guitar.”

Passport Echo will then continuously scan the Program Guide data to locate programs for which the description or title includes the word “guitar.”

Passport Echo will then automatically record each qualifying program.

The keywords you specify may happen to refer to an extremely large number of programs. In this case, it is possible that your keyword series requests will cause Passport Echo to record an extremely large number of programs, which may quickly consume the available space on the hard disk and make it impossible to record other programs. Create your keyword series recording requests with caution, and check frequently to make sure that your keyword series recording requests have not used up too much hard disk space.

To check the estimated amount of hard disk space that is currently available for new recordings, you can display the

Saved Shows Information panel. To do so, press the DVR LIST key, then press the A key. Highlight View Disk Info , then press the SELECT key.

Passport Echo Viewer’s Guide 21

Note: If a keyword search yields more than 50 matches,

Passport Echo will not allow you to schedule a series recording.

You can create a keyword series recording request whether or not a search of the Program Guide yields any matching programs.

Creating a keyword series recording request:

1 Follow Steps 1 through 5 from the procedure described in

“Searching the Program Guide by

Keyword” on page 20. Key in the word or name for which you want to create a keyword series recording request.

Passport Echo displays a list of keyword headers and icons.

( Note: Keyword headers always appear in capital letters.

)

Each keyword header contains the keyword you entered, but it may also contain additional words or variations of the word you entered. A sub-list of programs is contained within each keyword header (folder).

2 Press the right arrow repeatedly to move the highlight to the right window. Press the up or down arrow to move the highlight to the desired keyword header.

Passport Echo highlights the keyword header.

Note: You can press SELECT to view the program titles contained in the keyword header to make sure you want to record them all. Press the left arrow to collapse the keyword header list.

3 Press the REC key.

Passport Echo displays a dialog that asks whether you want to record all shows associated with the keyword, or only movies.

Using Parental Control

Parental Control enables you to restrict the viewing of certain channels, ratings, content advisory levels, and time periods. For example, you may wish to prevent your children from watching certain channels or programs intended for mature audiences, or to restrict TV watching at certain times, such as late in the evening.

You can also hide the titles and descriptions of adult-oriented programs so they do not appear in the Program Guide or other places in Passport Echo.

Setting Up Parental Control

To set up Parental Control, specify the channels, ratings, content advisories, and time periods you want to lock, and whether you want to hide adult-oriented program titles. (If you have not yet created a PIN, but still try to turn on Parental Control, Passport

Echo will prompt you to create a PIN.)

Once you have specified the locking settings, you can then turn on Parental Control to lock all the channels, ratings, content advisory levels, and time periods you specified. To watch locked programs and channels, you then must enter a PIN.

When you select a locked program, a display similar to the following is shown:

Using the Digital Video

Recorder (DVR)

This chapter explains how to operate the Passport Echo digital video recorder (DVR) and how to take advantage of the many new features available.

Passport Echo enables you to digitally record programs and manage a library of previously recorded programs. For example, you can group episodes of the same program into a folder. You can schedule future recordings of programs or entire series. You can also view TV live or time-shift your TV viewing.

Your set-top box features two tuners as well as DVR capabilities, enabling you to:

• Watch live TV.

• Watch time-shifted (delayed) TV. You can pause, rewind, or fast forward the video (up to the current point in the program).

• Watch recorded programs (Saved Shows).

• Record one program while watching another program that is currently airing.

• Record two programs simultaneously while watching either program.

• Record two programs simultaneously--while watching a third program that had been previously saved to the set-top box’s internal hard disk.

• Convert any data temporarily recorded in the Live Off Disk

(LOD) buffer to a long-term recording. This feature enables you to begin a recording well after a program has started and still record the entire program, including the beginning

(assuming the channel had been selected since the beginning of the program).

• Swap back and forth between two tuners. This enables you to jump between two channels of live TV, or between a live

Passport Echo Viewer’s Guide 49

channel and a time-shifted program or a recording.

• Watch playback in slow motion.

• Display a panel that shows how much space on the hard disk is used and how much is available.

• Group episodes of the same series into folders.

Understanding Your

Digital Video Recorder

(DVR)

Your DVR set-top box hardware includes the following components:

• Two TV tuners

• Two video encoder/decoders

• An internal hard disk drive

Each of the two tuners continuously records programming from two different channels, allowing you to perform standard DVR functions, such as:

• Pause live (and recorded) TV

• Rewind and replay live (and recorded) TV

• Rewind, then fast forward to the current point in a program

• Record an entire program, including the beginning, after it has started

• Perform standard DVR functions, such as fast forwarding buffered live TV or recorded shows

• Skip ahead in 30 second increments

• Play back video from the LOD buffer in slow motion (forward or reverse)

• Step forward or backward frameby-frame (when playing back recorded shows or buffered live

TV)

• Skip to predetermined time increments as you fast forward or rewind through a program (Notch

Skip)

Each tuner saves the currently selected program to the LOD buffer.

When you turn on the power to the settop box, typically one half-hour or one hour of the currently selected program

(depending on your cable company) is already present in the LOD buffer.

This means that if a channel has been selected since the beginning of a program, you can rewind to view the earlier portion of the show. You can also record a program after it has begun; if the beginning of the program is present in the LOD buffer, it will be recorded in its entirety.

Note: In general, you cannot pause or rewind a PPV program unless it is being recorded.

However, you can rewind to the beginning during the first several minutes (i.e., the “free preview”) of a PPV program if you purchase the program.

Swapping Between

Foreground and

Background Tuners

The tuner you are currently watching is generally referred to as the foreground tuner. The other tuner is called the background tuner.

You can swap between the programs shown on the foreground and background tuners by pressing the

SWAP key on the remote control.
