2.2 Connections
The specific connections required by the terminal (monitor, keyboard, mouse, printer)
are described in the manufacturers' documentation. This section describes fitting the
software key and the connections required for the :
e AC supply and the,
e terminal/PLC data link.
2.2-1 Fitting the software key

Note :
This key contains the access rights which are needed to access the PL7-2 software.
The Key Manager tool, integrated into the X-TEL and MINI X-TEL Software Workshop and in the
DOS User interface, transfers this right to the master key, making the PL7-2 key superfluous and
thus freeing the relevant slot in the key holder.
Further information for using this tool can be found in the following manuals :
e TXT DM BJR V5E (divider C - Section 2),
e TXT DM XTEL V5E (divider C - Section 9),
e TSX DM USR V5E (Section 5).
2.2-2 Connecting the AC supply
Before connecting the AC supply, ensure that all systems components are setto operate
at the correct voltage.

3.5-2 Operating modes
Standalone operation (0 - TERMINAL MEMORY)
This mode is intended especially for using the terminal in a design office, to configure an
application, enter the program to internal RAM memory, store it to diskette or hard disk,
print and document the application, etc.
Note :
CONTROL, ADJUST, DATA and DEBUG modes cannot be accessed when operating in Standalone
mode.
Connected operation (1 - TSX MEMORY)
The terminal uses the PLC memory in this operating mode. Two types of operation are
available :
e Local connection
The terminal is connected to a TSX 7 PLC. The memory used is the user memory
supported by this PLC. This operating mode allows an application to be debugged,
adjusted and modified on-line, and stored to hard disk.
+ Connected to the network
- TELWAY for TSX 47-J/10/20 PLCs
- FIPWAY for TSX 17-20 PLCs
The terminal is connected to a PLC which is in turn connected to a network. This type
of operation offers the same possibilities (debugging, adjusting, etc.) as when
connected locally, but using a remote PLC.
Access times depend on the load on the network.
The station address is defined at the Project level under X-TEL as well as under User
Interface by a maximum access programmer.
The following table gives the possibilities available for each operating mode, with the
terminal in Standalone or Connected mode.

Program files (xxx.BIN) are not stored automatically. Therefore the user is advised to save them
frequently in order to avoid losing data during a power break.
Other files are stored automatically when they are closed (when the user quits the corresponding
function).
3/17
3.7-2 Storing an application program
PL7-2 software offers two ways of storing and retrieving PL7-2 programs in Standalone
mode :
e Using the dynamic soft keys [STORE] and [RETRIEVE] on the MODE SELECTION
screen,
e Using the Transfer mode (see section 14).
Using the dynamic soft keys gives faster access to files. Additional comments can be
entered when using the TRANSFER mode.
In both cases, the files are stored at station level :
e in sub-directory PL7_2_17\APPLI. for TSX 17-20
e in sub-directory PL7_2_47\APPLI. for TSX 27/47
Procedure for storing :
[STORE] Allows the user to write the application file name under which the
application program will be stored (without the .BIN extension as this will
be added automatically by the program) and access the following dynamic
soft keys :
[DIR] Lists all the files already archived in sub-directory

4.1 Physical and logical connections
4.1-1 Physical connection
The physical connection is defined by the
physical link (connection cable) between the
terminal and the terminal port of the PLC or
between the terminal with a TSX FPC 10/20
card and the FIPWAY network.
4.1-2 Logical connection
The logical connection corresponds to the communication between the terminal and the
PLC with which it is communicating.
When a PLC is connected locally, the logical connection corresponds to the physical
connection.
Station 0 Station n Station 15
physical
connection
logical
connection
For example, inthe TELWAY network shown above, the terminal is physically connected
to station 15. The logical connection can be defined with any ofthe PLCs on the network
(in this case, station 0). The terminal then communicates with the memory of the PLC at
station O.
This user makes the choice by :
e defining the logical address of the station :
- under X-TEL Software Workshop by clicking on the station icon in the Project window
and selecting the define function in the menu. (see manual TXT DM XTEL V5E
section 4.2, divider C).
-under DOS User Interface, activate the address menu in the User interface (see
manual TSX DM USR V5E)
e selecting 1 - TSX MEMORY, from the MODE SELECTION screen,
e reading the physical (TERMINAL) and logical (TSX) addresses, in the NETWORK
ADDRESS box in the MODE SELECTION screen.
4/2
Operation with the terminal connected À
4.2 Reservation of a connected PLC
4.2-1 Reservation of a network connected PLC
On a TELWAY network (TSX 47 J/47-10/47-20 PLCs) or FIPWAY network (TSX 17-20
PLCs), any FTX 417/507 terminal or microcomputer can be physically connected to any
TSX 7 station. Consequently several terminals can request logical connection to the
same station in the authorized operating modes.
A PLC cannot normally be logically connected to two terminals or to two sessions on the
same terminal due to access and procedure conflicts. In order to avoid this, each terminal
reserves the PLC to which it is logically connected (except in ADJUST mode).
As soon as one of the following operating modes is selected, the terminal automatically
reserves the PLC to which it is logically connected :
0 - CONTROL 1 - CONFIGURATION
2 - PROGRAM 5- DATA
6 - DEBUG 7 - TRANSFER
8 - DOCUMENT-PRINT 9 - SEARCH/REPLACE
A terminal therefore cannot be logically connected in these modes to a PLC that has
already been reserved. If a logical connection is requested, a message is displayed
showing that the PLC is already reserved.
No reservation is made in ADJUST mode. In this mode any terminal can be logically
connected to any PLC on the network.
4.2-2 Cancellation of the reservation
The reservation of a PLC is cancelled 1 minute after it is logically disconnected from the
terminal which made the reservation. This situation occurs when the terminal which
made the reservation has :
e Changed the address of the station to which it is connected,
+ Changed to a mode which does not include reservation (e.g. ADJUST),
e Abandoned the Connected mode (i.e. changed to the Standalone mode),
+ Been physically disconnected from the network.
Note
If the program of the PLC which was reserved includes a breakpoint, cancellation of the reservation
also cancels the breakpoint (but if the task was stopped on the breakpoint when the reservation is
cancelled, the task remains stopped). On the other hand, cancellation of the reservation does not
affect the forced states of bits.
4.2-3 Reservation of a locally connected PLC
In the case of a locally connected PLC (i.e. logical connection = physical connection), the
method of reservation by the terminal (and of cancellation of the reservation) is the same
as described in the previous paragraph.
4.3 Operation in the locally connected mode
4.3-1 Connection procedure
On the MODE SELECTION display, the procedure for changing from the Standalone
mode to the Locally connected mode is as follows :

4.3-2 Effect on the program in the internal memory of the terminal
Changing from Standalone mode to Connected mode will not erase the program in the
internal memory of the terminal if the program was written in PL7-2 language and the
connection is made to a TSX 17-20/27/47.
Note :
4.4 Operation in network connected mode
4.4-1 Connection procedure
The procedure for changing from the Standalone to the Network Connected mode is the
same as forthe Locally Connected mode, except that the number of the station with which
the terminal is to be logically connected must be defined.
When the terminal is physically connected to a station on a network, it recognizes the
number of the station and repeats it on the MODE SELECTION screen inthe NETWORK
ADDRESS box.

e Point to the graphic element to be deleted (for a function block, the cursor must be on
the top left corner of the block).
<DEL> deletes the graphic element indicated by the cursor.
e Position the cursor to the right of the element to be deleted (for a function block, the
cursor must be on the top left corner of the block),
<RUB> deletes the graphic element immediately to the left of the cursor.
Special case : vertical link,
e Position the cursor at the bottom of the vertical link.

Modifying an object, mnemonic, function block number or arithmetic
expression
e Position the cursor on the corresponding graphic element.
<ZOOM> displays the address, mnemonic, block number or arithmetic expression in
the operator input line so that it can be modified as required.
Replacing a graphic element
To replace a graphic element by another graphic element, the old graphic element must
always be erased first. The terminal will allow substitution provided that :
e graphic elements are of the same type (example : replacing a normally open contact
by a normally closed contact). For function blocks :

7.7 Programming with the PLC running
Warning:
For obvious safety reasons, it is strongly recommended to stop the PLC before making
any modifications to the program.
However, it is possible to modify the program while the PLC is running in order to make
modifications that do not require the stopping of the application. All such modifications
should be made by authorized personnel only and remain the entire responsibility of the
user.
Modifications to the program while the PLC is running are subject to the following
conditions :
e Before making any modification to the program it is essential to be fully aware of its
consequences on the application and to ensure that all the necessary measures and
precautions have been taken.
e Do not modify any Ladder network that contains a program jump instruction or that is
the destination of a jump instruction.
e 1115 not possible to modify the configuration parameters of the function blocks while the
PLC is running.
7/20
Program mode : Ladder language 7
7.7-1 Accessing the program
The program is accessed in the same way as when the PLC is stopped.
Before each modification or insertion of a Ladder network, the following message
appears “TSX RUNNING, CONFIRM?” to remind the user that the PLC is running.
[YES] confirms that the modification is to be made while the PLC is running.
[NO] cancels the modification request.
The modifications that can be made are the same as when the PLC is stopped. All the
graphic elements (contacts, coils, blocks, links) can be inserted or deleted in a Ladder
network. After being modified, the Ladder network must be validated by pressing
<ENTER>.
A Ladder network that has been modified is not executed during the first scan
cycle after validation.
It is for this reason that Ladder networks that contain a jump instruction, or that are the
destination of a jump instruction, must not be modified.

selected automatically.
8.1-1 Principle
After selecting the task and module of the program to be created or modified, the terminal
initially proposes the DISPLAY work mode. This mode allows an existing Grafcet
program to be read page by page and gives access to the other functions of the Program

e The label of the contact network is entered automatically and corresponds to the
associated step in the case of an action, or to the source step followed by the
destination step in the case of a transition condition.
e Only coils (S) and (R) are proposed in the case of a contact network containing an
action associated with a step.
«e Only the next step coil (4) is proposed in the case of a contact network containing a
transition condition. Function blocks and operation blocks cannot be programmed in
this type of contact network.

10.3 Reading data objects
10.3-1 Reading an object or a list of objects (left half of screen)
[DATA]
[BASE]
Permits the address of the object to be entered in the operator input line.
<ENTER> confirms the entry. The object and its value are shown in
reverse video in the left half.
< | > permits entry of a new object below the previous one. In this way a
list of 19 objects maximum can be entered. At the end of the list, the cursor
remains blocked on the last line.
By successive keystrokes defines the code in which the value of the
word shown in reverse video is expressed (D=Decimal by default,
H=Hexadecimal, B=Binary (Bed), L=Logic, M=Message). The code can
also be defined by pressing the alphabetic keys D, H, В, Е, M.
As long as an object is shown in reverse video, its state is shown in real
time. The value is only updated when the object is shown in reverse video
(see Reading a list of objects in Real Time).
10/5
Other dynamic soft keys :
[CURSOR] repositions the cursor at the start of the operator input line.
[Object] the last object selected is indicated on the operator input line.
[Dec] [Hex] [Bcd] [Log] [Msg]
enables the code in which the words are expressed to be specified, before
validation.
[/] completes entry of the object value in the selected code.
Modifying a list
To modify a list already entered, place the cursor on the list to be modified :
<DEL> or <INS> to modify only the value of the object.
[DATA] to enter a new object with or without a value.
10.3-2 Reading a list of consecutive objects (right half of screen)
The list can be defined and read in two ways :
e Enterthe first object in the list (and its code if itis an object word) inthe left half, following
the procedure described above.
<ZOOM> displasy the object entered and the 18 following objects, in the right half.
[FD ./.] permits selection of the required index in the address of a data object
(see next page for a detailed description of this key).
e Enter the first object in the list [Object] followed by a number representing the length
of the list [Length].
The list is displayed in the right half .
Example : W10-9 lists words W10 to W18.
In the case of a list of words, the code used to express their values can be defined by using
the soft keys <F4> to <F8>.
[Length] defines the length of the list (by default 1).
10/6
Adjust mode 10
10.3-3 Reading a list of objects in real time (right half)
[RFRESH] _ displays in real time, all values of the list of objects in the left half of the
screen. No entries can be made during this display.
[CANCEL] cancels updating ofthe real time display and memorizes all values, except
those of the object displayed in reverse video.
10.3-4 Data log (right half)
This function enables the log of the real time values of a data object to be displayed on
the right half of the screen.
Procedure :
<-> displays the object in the right half of the screen.
[RFRESH] starts display of the data log. The real time value of the object is updated
on each scan cycle and listed on the 19 lines of the right half of the screen.
[CANCEL] cancels updating of the data log on the current line.
10.3-5 Searching for a forced bit (right half)
Enter the address of the object which is the starting point of the search (or select in
reverse video if it is already displayea).
<Alt> and < — > or <S>
starts the search. When a forced bit is found, the search stops and the
object is displayed in the right half of the screen, followed by the letter F.
The same key can be used to restart the search. The next forced bit (of the
same type) which is found is displayed on the next line.
[CANCEL] cancels the search.
10.3-6 Use of soft key [FD./.]
Soft key [FD./.] enables the required index in the address of a data objectto be selected,
from which a list can be established or from which a search can be made.
The screen display of soft key F7 has two numbers, the first number can be selected by
the user by successive keystrokes, the second number is determined by the terminal
according to the number of indices of the object concerned :
[FD 1/1] object with one index, examples : W4, SY20
[FD 1/2] object with two indices, example : W4,1
10/7
[FD 1/3] object with three indexes, or I/O bit, examples : COMO,1,3 - 114,1
The first number (on the left) indicates the index from which the list displayed on the
screen will be established : 1 corresponds to the rightmost index of the address, and
2, 3 or 4 to the leftmost index of addresses with 2, 3 or 4 indexes.
Examples :
[FD 1/1] B1 B2 B3 B4....
[FD 1/2] W15,1 W15,2 W15,3
f 1 1
[FD 2/2] W15,1 W16,1 W17,1...
1 | 1
[FD 3/3] COM1,0,0 СОМ2,0,0 COM3,0,0...

10.4 Writing and forcing data objects
10.4-1 Modifying and forcing bits
To modify the state of a bit, enter or point to the object, then use the dynamic keys to
perform the functions listed below :
[SET] sets the bit displayed in reverse video to 1.
[RESET] resets the bit displayed in reverse video to 0.
[FORC 1] forces the bit displayed in reverse video to 1.
[FORC 0] forces the bit displayed in reverse video to 0.
[UNFORC] cancels the forced state of the bit.
A forced bit is indicated by the letter F.

Adjust mode 10
10.4-2 Writing a list of consecutive bits
A list of consecutive bits can be setto 1 or 0, by adding the required length to the address
of the bit and then adding “=1” or “=0”.
Example B20-10 = 1 — sets bits B20 to B29 to 1.
The list of bits is displayed in the right half of the screen.
The letter “W” after each bit indicates that the value displayed is the written value and not
the real value (which may have been modified by the program).
Notes :

Note :
All forcing of bits is cancelled on cold restart (SYO = 1) or after PLC initialization (INIT TSX).
10.4-3 Writing and modifying words
A word and its value can be written directly in the operator input line :
[DATA] accesses the operator input line.
Enter the address of the word, then use the following soft keys to select
the code in which the value of the word is to be written (decimal by default) :
[Dec] [Hex] [Bcd] [Log] [Msg]
Enter the value of the word. Remember to end the entry with a single
quotation mark < ‘ > if one of the soft keys above has been used.
Example: [DATA] W10 [Hex] FA20 [] [ENTER] > W10= H'FA20'
10.4-4 Writing a list of consecutive words
Writing a list of consecutive words is the same as entering a word, additionally entering
the length of the list after entering the word address.
After validating the entry, the required list of words is displayed in the right half of the
screen.
Example : [DATA] W10-9 [Hex] FA20 [1] [ENTER] — the 9 words from W10 to W19
are equal to H'FA20'

After the program has been entered in the Program mode, the program
must be checked and debugged. The Debug mode is therefore accessible
only when the terminal is operating in the Connected mode (i.e. locally
connected to a PLC, or connected to a PLC through a TELWAY network).
The DEBUG mode enables the operator to :
Start or stop the execution of the program,
Display in real time :
e the Ladder networks or Grafcet pages of the program,
® up to 6 predefined screens containing :
- a Ladder network or a Grafcet page,
- alist of data objects or a list of active Grafcet steps,
- the states of the command bits of a drum controller,
e the Ladder contact networks or Grafcet pages upstream or downstream
of the predefined screens.
Modify (without leaving the DEBUG mode) :
e aprogram (modification is possible while the PLC is running),
® the parameters of functions blocks (only when the PLC is stopped).
Insert a breakpoint in a task, so that it can be executed Ladder network
by network, Grafcet step by step, or drum step by step.
Execute the program cycle by cycle,

12.5 Defining a breakpoint
To set a breakpoint in a program (on a Ladder network, Grafcet step, or drum step) on
which execution of the program will be stopped.
12.5-1 Procedure
[BP] accesses the following soft keys, to enable the operator to define the
element on which the breakpoint is to be positioned.
[PROG] accesses the TASK AND MODULE SELECTION screen, so that
the task, module and contact network in which the breakpoint is to be
positioned can be selected. The task selected must be the Master task,
since a breakpoint cannot be set in the Fast task.
[DRUM] permits selection of a drum controller by entering its number and
indicating (by using the cursor control keys) the number of the step on
which the breakpoint is to be set.
[STEP] permits selection of the Grafcet step on which a break-point is to
be positioned. When the page Is displayed in real time, the outline of the
step on which the breakpoint is set is highlighted.
[CUR SCR] sets the breakpoint on the current screen that is displayed.
Pressing <ENTER> validates the selection and displays the “MAINTAIN
OUTPUTS IF SY8 = 0” screen, to remind the user of the effect of the SY8
system bit.
[YES] to continue defining the breakpoint (without affecting SY8). For
safety reasons bit SY8 is set to 1 by default.
[NO] returns to the previous screen to access bit SY8, in ADJUST or DATA
mode.
<ENTER> permits the program to be displayed in real time.
A new dynamic key appears ( TSX 27/47-J/47-10/47-20) :
[DISP BP] permits breakpoint that has been defined to be displayed.
12.5-2 Deleting a breakpoint
[BP] displays the element on which the breakpoint has been defined.
[DEL BP] deletes the breakpoint (TSX 17-20).
[ERASE] deletes the breakpoint (TSX 27/47-J/47-10/47-20).
Notes :
e Acold restart (SYO) automatically cancels a breakpoint.
e Modification of the program is not possible after a breakpoint has been defined.
12/12
Debug mode 12
12.6 Executing the program step by step
To facilitate debugging, the following methods of executing the program in DEBUG mode
are available :
e Execution from the start of the scan cycle up to the breakpoint,
e Execution contact network by network, Grafcet step by step, or drum step by step,
e Execution cycle by cycle.
12.6-1 Effect of a breakpoint on a PLC cycle
When the breakpoint is active, the PLC cycle is as follows :
e Ona Ladder contact network: halts execution of the Master task and the Fast task :
TSX 17-20 : Inputs continue to be scanned and outputs are updated,
TSX 27-47 : Inputs are no longer scanned and outputs are not updated.
› On a Grafcet step : The Grafcet program is executed up to the step on which the
breakpoint has been defined and then stopped. However, the Preliminary and Post-
processing sections and the Fast task continue to be executed normally.
e Onadrum step: The drum controller advances up to the step on which the breakpoint
has been defined and then stops. However, the program continues to be executed
normally.
Note :
e Abreakpoint does not stop evolution of the active time values of drum steps Di,V, or Grafcet steps
Xi,V, nor the current values of timers Ti,V.
12.6-2 Executing the program element by element
After defining a breakpoint :
[BP] accesses one of the following keys (TSX 17-20).
[DISP BP] accesses one of the following keys (TSX 27-47-J/47-10/ 47-20).
12/13
These keys allow the breakpoint to be advanced from one element to the next throughout
the program.
Note :
[LAB + 1] permits execution of the program, contact network by contact
network, up to the end of the program module. When the last contact
network is reached, the outputs are updated and the breakpoint is
repositioned on the first contact network of the program module.
[STEP + 1] permits step by step execution of the drum controller. When
the last step is reached, the breakpoint is repositioned on the first step.
[STEP + 1] permits step by step execution of the Grafcet program. When
a sequence selection or simultaneous activation is encountered, the
breakpoint must be repositioned in the required sequence.
1e last three keys described above have no

Disk «—> Terminal/TSX : Transfer of the PL7-2 program between the hard disk and the
internal memory of the terminal (in Standalone mode) orthe PLC memory (in Connected
mode) (see section 13.3).
BACKUP «> TSX: Transfer of the program between the internal memory of the TSX
17-20 PLC and the BACKUP cartridge (EPROM or EEPROM) (see section 13.4).
lf the Backup cartridge is an EPROM, it can only be read by the PLC (BACKUP— TSX).
If the Backup cartridge is an EEPROM, check the position of the microswitch (refer to the
TSX 17 Micro-PLC Installation Manual) before performing a transfer.
Size Conversion Utility : changes the size of a PL7-2 application in memory :
e 8 or 24 Kbytes (TSX 17-20 PLC), or
e 8, 16 or 32 Kbytes (TSX 27/47-J/47-10/47-20 PLCs).
This function condenses the application stored in memory.
13.1-2 Protected transfers (TSX 17-20)
Once a TSX — BACKUP transfer (see section 13.4) has been performed, it is possible
to lock the destination cartridge. This makes it impossible to access the stored program
to read, write ortransfer it. The program can only be accessedin ADJUST or DATA modes.
Remarks applicable to TSX 17-20
Notes :
On each power-up, the TSX 17-20 checks that the programs stored in the internal RAM
and the Backup (EPROM or EEPROM) cartridge are identical. If any difference is found,
the program stored in the Backup cartridge is automatically copied to RAM.
Attention :
Ifthe PLC contains the same program, unprotected in internal RAM and protected in the
Backup cartridge, the programs are considered to be identical and are not automatically
transferred from the Backup cartridge to the internal RAM of the PLC on each power-up.
To ensure that the program in RAM is also protected, itis necessary to perform a manual
back-up from the cartridge to the PLC.

BACKUP — TSX: transfers from the BACKUP (EPROM or EEPROM)
memory cartridge to the internal memory of the PLC.
This transfer is only accepted if the PLC is stopped.
TSX — BACKUP : transfers from the internal memory of the PLC to the
Backup cartridge (EEPROM only). This transfer is accepted with the PLC
stopped or running.
TSX — BACKUP: transfers from the PLC internal memory to the Backup
cartridge (EEPROM only) with permanent read/write protection of the
program. The cartridge can be reused by making another transfer that
overwrites it. Once a cartridge is protected, access to it is severely
restricted and read, write and transfer functions are inhibited.
Comparison TSX «> BACKUP : compares the contents of the internal
memory of the PLC and the Backup cartridge. If the contents of the two
memories are different, the message “TSX AND BACKUP MEMORIES

<3> This function adapts the size of the program stored in the terminal to the
size of the destination user memory cartridge.
Example:
Size of file program = 8 Kbytes
Size of BACKUP cartridge = 24 Kbytes
This function enables the program to be executed on the 24 Kb cartridge,
even though the program was originally intended for an 8 Kb cartridge.
The program to be condensed can be located in the local memory ofthe
terminal (Standalone mode) or in the internal memory of the PLC
(Connected mode). The type of conversion selected (8Kb — 24Kb or
24Kb — 8Kb) will depend on the size of the source memory defined in

Program files and documentation files are independent of each other. It is therefore, not
necessary for the program to be in the memory in order to enter file data to the PLC.
Documentation
Before creating or modifying a file, the following must be declared using the dynamic soft
keys :
[ARCHIV] permits entry of the name (7 characters max.) under which the files will be
stored. This name must be the same as the name of the program file (i.e.
the name under which the program was stored).
[REV] permits entry of the revision number of the listing (optional). This number
will appear on the bottom of each page of the listing.

o the selection screen, the information that
e lost.
Appendix : malfunctions - principle of storage - file recovery
Although storage of the items on disk is automatic, it is useful to understand the principle,
particularly if it is necessary to retrieve a file after a power cut or malfunction.
Entering a modification of an item using [MODIFY] and confirming with <ENTER>, copies
the contents of back-up file XXXX.BAK in the APPLI directory for the station. This back-
up file is then erased as soon as the item has been validated.
Ка malfunction occurs while an item is being modified, the file concerned may be erased.
However, the information that existed before the modification can be retrieved by
immediately copying the back-up file XXXX.BAK (without opening a new item) in place
of the file that was being created when the malfunction occurred (refer to the “COPY
FILE” function in section 13.5).

systematically to a xxx.DOC file located in the disk space reserved for the station
(APPLI) use by XTEL-DOC. In this case this file replaces the old one. (This only
applies to PL7-2 under the X-TEL or MINI X-TEL Software Workshops).
