1 Introduction
Operator dialog:
The demands for increased machine productivity require that automation
systems controlling thase. machines provide the operator with even more
information and self-explicit messages. Operator dialog requires a simple
dialog in the language of the. production facility.

« Keyboard:
The XBT-A terminal has a 27-key keyboard that is split into 3 zones:
- a 12-key zone for function keys that can be customized for direct operator
access, depending on the version selected:
. XBT-A70101: 12 function keys marked (F1) to
. XBT-A71101: 12 function keys with label halders,
. ABT-A72101: 12 function keys with LEDs and label holders,

. (DEL) key to delete
. ENTER! to validate
Note: the combination of (ENTER) +(РОМСТ) keys enables selection of
operating modes (Operation or Configuration).
Description
XBT-A Terminal Description
« Message Memory:
Tha XBT-A terminal has a EEPROM (non-volatile) memory that can store
100 messages of 16 alphanumeric characters.
Storing the operator dialog messages in the XBT-A terminal reduces the
data stored in the PLC and the exchanges on the serial data link.
These messages can be, for example:
- operator requests: [ RUN BELT |]
- automated system requests:| VALUE = 435? |
- instructions — — — : [CHECK VOLTAGE]
-fauts — — — — :[(PUMPFAUT |]
The messages are stored using either.
- А PC/PS microcomputer and XBTL-100 software. The applications
(messages) can be entered in local mode and transferred to tha XBT-A
terminal at any time. XBTL-100 also performs file storage and printing. In
addition, an application in an XBT terminal in operation can be copied to the
microcomputer and stored,
- Astandard CRT terminal,
- A TSX T407 programming terminal.
Description
XBT-A Terminal Description
+ Communication:
The XBT-A terminal is equiped as standard with isolated serial links for
connection to PLCs, microcomputers and all microcomputer systems.
- RS 232C serial link,
- Current loop link (passive, passing or blocked),
- RS 422-485 serial link.
The parameters of these data links can be set in Configuration mode. The
various transmission modes are mutually exclusive.
The exchange modas that can be used are:
- ASCH mode: PLCs and various automation systems,
- Adjust mode for TSX Series 7 PLCs.
2 Description
2.2 The Operator Dialog Concept
Control of automated systems requires that operators be provided with
industrial terminals that perform operator dialog functions in the operators
own fanguage.
While providing high level performance, operator dialog must require
minimal application programming.
By using distributed intelligence, XBT-A terminals meet these requirements
through:

Operating messages are stored in the XBT-A terminal using a TSX 7407
terminal, a display terminal or a PC/PS microcomputer.
The message storage procedures are described in section 5, Storing
Messages, page 39.
The XBT-A terminal in Configur. Memory mode, enables the serial link
parameters to be adapted to those of the storage device used.

This procedure is used to check that all electrical sub-units of the XBT-A
terminal are operating Correctly.
The self-tests can be triggered by the user in the Operation phase of the
XBT-A terminal (exchanges with the connected automation system). In this
case it is necessary to:
- select Configuration by pressing (ENTER) +!
- select TESTS by repeatedly pressing (FUNCT
During this procedure, the XBT-A terminal does not communicate with the
automated system (it is off-line).
The full Self-test procedure is the same regardless of the type of terminal
connected:
- XBT-A 70101 = 12 function keys (F1 to F12)
- XBT-A 71101 = 12 function keys with label holders
- XBT-A 72101 = 12 function keys with LEDs and label holders
- XBT-A 73101 = 8 function keys + 4 keys without LEDs, with label
holders + 4 indicators LED'S
The LED tests do not apply to models XBT-A 70101 and XBT-A 71101.

storing Messages
5.1 General
Storing messages in the EEPROM memory of the XBT-A terminal requires
that the serial link be connected to a programming terminal that can be:
- а TSX 1407 programming terminal,
- а CRT terminal,
- a PC/PS or compatible microcomputer.
The electrical connections to be made are described in sub-section В,
Connections, page 111.
The serial link parameters of the various programming terminals can be
diffarent from those of the automated system. They must therefore be
datihaë seperately. This er is perionmed In Configuration made after
setecting | LOAD PARA RS| (see sub-section 4.5.3, page 30).

The XBT-A terminal has а 32-character display memory. This means that
messages that are longer than the 16 characters of the display unit can be
displayed.

6.4 Exchange Format
This sub-section describes the format of exchanges between the XBT-A
terminal and the automated system using a serial link.
The exchanges determine the operations to be performed in the application
program.
The exchanges comprize a succession of ASCII characters that are
arranged in the following order:
HEADER | MNEMONIC DATA | TRAILER |
ASCII characters
ASCII characters LE: Line Feed
ESC (1B In HEX.) or (OA in HEX)
@ (40 in HEX.). CR: Cartage Retum
(0D in HEX.)
АЗС characters that define the
type of automated system
command
String of ASCH characters that define
the command parameters
Example: ESC R037 4327 LF CR
Only exchages starting with ESC or @ are analyzed by the XBT-A terminal.
The exchanges are two-way ones.
Therefore the description will cover:
- Commands from PLC to terminal
- Messages from terminal to PLC

Multipoint operation implies a number of terminals sharing the same

A master PLC controls the exchanges by polling the addressed slaves in
sequence.

7.2 Programming by TSX 7 (PL7-2) ASCII Mode
‚ Operating principle:
Message number 001 is stored in the XBT-A terminal:
PUMP = - - RPM (type N message) using the procedure described in
section 5.
When called-up by the operator by pressing , the message
PUMP = XX RPM |will be displayed and will take the value of W000 as a
parameter. The operator can then validate the displayed value by pressing
or modify the instruction.
Serial data transmission between the TSX Series 7 PLC and the XBT-A
terminal takes place via a TSX SCM 20 module. For installation
information on the module, refer to the TSX SCM 20/21/22 User's Manual,
Ref. TSX D23 004E.
