• The main plug is used as disconnect device and it should remain readily operable during intended used. In order to disconnect the apparatus from the mains completely, the main plug should be disconnected from the mains socket outlet completely.

• The mains plug of apparatus should not be obstructed OR should be easily accessed during intended use.

• Minimum 10 cm (4 inches) distances around the apparatus for sufficient ventilations.

• The ventilation should not be impeded by covering the ventilation openings with items such as newspaper, table-cloths, curtains, etc.

16. Keep your fingers well clear of the disc tray as it is closing. Neglecting to do so may cause serious personal injury.

18. Do not place the apparatus on amplifiers or equipment that may produce heat.

19. Never block or cover the slots or openings in the unit.

Never place the unit:

• on a bed, sofa, rug or similar surface;

• too close to drapes, curtains, or walls; or

• in a confined space such as a bookcase, built-in cabinet, or any other place with poor ventilation.

The slots and openings are provided to protect the unit from overheating and to help maintain reliable operation.

20. Do not use a cracked, deformed, or repaired disc. These discs are easily broken and may cause serious personal injury and apparatus malfunction.

21. If the apparatus should emit smoke or an unusual odor, immediately disconnect the power cord from the wall outlet. Wait until the smoke or smell stops, then ask your dealer for a check and repair. Neglecting to do so may cause fire.

22. During thunderstorms, do not touch the connecting cables or the apparatus.

23. Warning: To prevent spread of fire, keep candles or other open flames away from this product at all times.

SOME DOS AND DON’TS ON THE SAFE USE OF EQUIPMENT

This equipment has been designed and manufactured to meet international safety standards but, like any electrical equipment, care must be taken if you are to obtain the best results and safety is to be assured. So, please read the points below for your own safety. They are of a general nature, intended to help you with all your electronic consumer products and some points may not apply to the goods you have just purchased.

DO read the operating instructions before you attempt to use the equipment.

DO ensure that all electrical connections (including the mains plug, extension leads and inter- connections between the pieces of equipment) are properly made and in accordance with the manufacturer’s instructions. Switch off and withdraw the mains plug before making or changing connections.

DO consult your dealer if you are ever in doubt about the installation, operation or safety of your equipment.

DO be careful with glass panels or doors on equipment

High temperatures can melt plastic and lead to fires.

DON’T use equipment such as personal stereos or radios so that you are distracted from the requirements of traffic safety. It is illegal to watch television whilst driving.

DON’T listen to headphones at high volume, as such use can permanently damage your hearing.

DON’T leave equipment switched on when it is unattended unless it is specifically stated that it is designed for unattended operation or has a stand-by mode. Switch off using the switch on the equipment and make sure that your family know how to do this. Special arrangements may need to be made for infirm or handicapped people.

DON’T continue to operate the equipment if you are in any doubt about it working normally, or if it is damaged in any way -switch off, withdraw the mains plug and consult your dealer.

Precautions

Notes on handling

When shipping the DVD player, the original shipping carton and packing materials come in handy. For maximum protection, repack the unit as it was originally packed at the factory. Take care not to give it a shock or shake when carrying.

Do not use volatile liquids, such as insect spray, near the DVD player. Do not leave rubber or plastic products in contact with the DVD player for a long time. They will leave marks on the finish.

The top and rear panels of the DVD player may become war m after a long period of use. This is not a malfunction.

When the DVD player is not in use, be sure to remove the disc and turn off the power.

If you do not use the DVD player for a long period, the unit may not function properly in the future. Turn on and use the DVD player occasionally.

Notes on locating

Place the DVD player on a level surface. Do not use it on a shaky or unstable surface such as a wobbling table or inclined stand. The loaded disc may come off the proper position and cause damage to the DVD player.

When you place this DVD player near a TV, radio, or

VCR, the playback picture may become poor and the sound may be distorted. In this case, place the DVD player away from the TV, radio, or VCR.

Notes on cleaning

Use a soft, dry cloth for cleaning.

For stubborn dirt, soak the cloth in a weak detergent solution, wring well and wipe. Use a dry cloth to wipe it dry.

Do not use any type of solvent, such as thinners and benzene, as they may damage the surface of the DVD player.

If you use a chemical saturated cloth to clean the unit, follow that product’s instructions.

Inspection and Maintenance

This DVD player is a high technology, precision device. If the optical pick-up lens and disc drive parts become dirty or worn down, the picture quality may be reduced. To avoid reduction in picture quality, it is recommended that regular inspection and maintenance (cleaning or parts replacement) be performed every 1,000 hours of use. For further details, contact your nearest consumer electronics dealer.

Notes on moisture condensation

Moisture condensation damages the DVD player. Please read the following carefully.

Moisture condensation occurs, for example, when you pour a cold drink into a glass on a warm day. Drops of water form on the outside of the glass. In the same way, moisture may condense on the optical pick-up lens inside this unit, one of the most crucial internal parts of the DVD player.

Moisture condensation occurs during the following cases.

When you bring the DVD player directly from a cold place to a warm place.

When you use the DVD player in a room where you just turned on the heater, or a place where the cold wind from the air conditioner directly hits the unit.

In summer, when you use the DVD player in a hot and humid place just after you move the unit from an air conditioned room.

When you use the DVD player in a humid place.

Do not use the DVD player when moisture condensation may occur.

If you use the DVD player in such a situation, it may damage discs and internal parts. Remove the disc, connect the power cord of the DVD player to the wall outlet, turn on the DVD player, and leave it for two or three hours. After two or three hours, the DVD player will have warmed up and evaporated any moisture. Keep the DVD player connected to the wall outlet and moisture condensation will seldom occur.

On handling discs

Do not touch the playback side of the disc.

Structure of disc contents

Normally, DVDs are divided into titles, and the titles are sub-divided into chapters. VIDEO CDs and audio CDs are divided into tracks.

On cleaning discs

Fingerprints and dust on the disc cause picture and sound deterioration. Wipe the disc from the center outwards with a soft cloth. Always keep the disc clean.

Each title, chapter or track is assigned a number, which is called “title number”, “chapter number” or “track number” respectively.

There may be discs that do not have these numbers.

If you cannot wipe off the dust with a soft cloth, wipe the disc lightly with a slightly moistened soft cloth and finish with a dry cloth.

Do not use any type of solvent such as thinner, benzine, commercially available cleaners or antistatic spray for vinyl LPs. It may damage the disc.

On storing discs

Do not store discs in a place subject to direct sunlight or near heat sources.

Do not store discs in places subject to moisture and dust such as a bathroom or near a humidifier.

Store discs vertically in a case. Stacking or placing objects on discs outside of their case may cause warping.

DVD player. Some DVDs are produced in a manner that allows specific or limited operation during playback. As such, the DVD player may not respond to all operating commands. This is not a defect in the DVD player. Refer to instruction notes of discs.

Notes on region numbers

The region number of this DVD player is 2. If region numbers, which stand for their playable area, are printed on your DVD and you do not find or , disc playback will not be allowed by the player. (In this case, the DVD player will display a message on-screen).

On VIDEO CDs

This DVD player supports VIDEO CDs equipped with the

PBC (Version 2.0) function. (PBC is the abbreviation of

Playback Control.) You can enjoy two playback variations depending on types of discs.

• VIDEO CD not equipped with PBC function (Version 1.1)

Sound and movie can be played on this DVD player in the same way as an audio CD.

• VIDEO CD equipped with PBC function (Version 2.0)

In addition to operation of a VIDEO CD not equipped with the PBC function, you can enjoy playback of interactive software with search function by using the menu displayed on the TV screen (Menu Playback).

Some of the functions described in this owner’s manual may not work with some discs.

Loading batteries

1 Open the cover.

Operating with the remote control

Point the remote control at the remote sensor and press the buttons.

2 Insert batteries (R03/AAA size).

Distance: About 7 m (23 feet) from the front of the remote sensor

Angle: About 30° in each direction of the front of the remote sensor

* Do not expose the remote sensor of the DVD player to a strong light source such as direct sunlight or other illumination. If you do so, you may not be able to operate the DVD player via the remote control.

Make sure to match the + and – on the batteries to the marks inside the battery compartment.

• Never throw batteries into a fire.

Notes

• Be sure to use R03/AAA size batteries.

• Dispose of batteries in a designated disposal area.

• Batteries should always be disposed of with the environment in mind. Always dispose of batteries in accordance with applicable laws and regulations.

• If the remote control does not operate correctly, or if the operating range becomes reduced, replace both batteries with new ones.

• When necessary to replace batteries in the remote control, always replace both batteries with new ones. Never mix battery types or use new and used batteries in combination.

• Always remove batteries from remote control if they are dead or if the remote control is not to be used for an extended period of time. This will prevent battery acid from leaking into the battery compartment.

• Battery shall not be exposed to excessive heat such as sunshine, fire or the like.

Notes on the remote control

• Direct the remote control at the remote sensor of the DVD player.

• When using the remote control, press the buttons at intervals of about 1 second to ensure the correct mode of operation.

• Do not drop or give the remote control a shock.

• Do not leave the remote control near an extremely hot or humid place.

• Do not spill water or put anything wet on the remote control.

• Do not open the remote control.

• Refer to the owner’s manual of the connected TV as well.

• When you connect the DVD player to your TV, be sure to turn off the power and unplug both units from the wall outlet before making any connections.

• If your television set has one audio input, connect the left and right audio outputs of the DVD player to a Y cable adapter (not supplied) and then connect to your TV.

• Connect the DVD player directly to your TV. If you connect the DVD player to a VCR, TV/VCR combination or video selector, the playback picture may be distorted as DVDs are copy protected.

• Analogue audio out will not have sound if DTS playback is selected.

About HDMI

HDMI (High Definition Multimedia Interface) supports both video and audio on a single digital connection for use with DVD players,

DTV, set-top boxes, and other AV devices. HDMI was developed to provide the technologies of High Bandwidth Digital Content

Protection (HDCP) as well as Digital Visual Interface (DVI) in one specification. HDCP is used to protect digital content transmitted and received by DVI-compliant or HDMI-compliant displays.

HDMI has the capability to support standard, enhanced, or high-definition video plus standard to multi-channel surroundsound audio. HDMI features included uncompressed digital video, a bandwidth of up to 2.2 gigabytes per second (with HDTV signals), one connector (instead of several cables and connectors), and communication between the AV source and AV devices such as DTVs.

Switching the video quality (HDMI mode) using the

HDMI button on the remote control or the HDMI

SELECT button on the front panel.

Press HDMI button on the remote control or HDMI SELECT button on the front panel to receive a suitable video quality in

STOP mode. The video quality is required to match your TV having HDMI feature and suitable quality. Please also check your TV owner’s manual.

Playing a Disc

This section shows you the basics on how to play a disc.

CAUTION

Keep your fingers well clear of the disc tray as it is closing.

Neglecting to do so may cause serious personal injury.

Basic playback

Preparations

• When you want to view a disc, turn on the TV and select the video input connected to the DVD player.

• When you want to enjoy the sound of discs from the audio system, turn on the audio system and select the input connected to the DVD player.

1 Press the ON/STANDBY button on the front panel or the POWER button on the remote control.

The DVD player turns on.

To obtain a higher quality picture

Occasionally, some picture noise not usually visible during a normal broadcast may appear on the TV screen while playing a DVD because the high resolution pictures on these discs include a lot of information. While the amount of noise depends on the TV you use with this DVD player, you should generally reduce the sharpness adjustment on your TV when viewing DVDs.

To start playback in the stop mode

Press PLAY.

2 Press OPEN/CLOSE.

The disc tray opens.

3 Place the disc on the disc tray.

With the playback side down

To pause playback (still mode)

Press PAUSE/STEP during playback.

To resume normal playback, press the

PLAY button.

• The sound is muted during still mode.

To stop playback

Press STOP.

• There are two different disc sizes. Place the disc in the correct guide on the disc tray. If the disc is out of the guide, it may damage the disc and cause the DVD player to malfunction.

• Do not place a disc which is unplayable in this DVD player.

4 Press OPEN/CLOSE to close the disc tray.

Playback starts.

If you insert a DVD that contains a top menu, a menu may appear. Use / / / to select the title you want to view, then press ENTER to start playback.

• You may need to press the TOP MENU or MENU button to display disc menu (depending on the actual

DVD.)

Notes

• If the disc tray is holding a disc you have already played, playback will begin from the location where you last stopped.

• Some video CD are recorded with PBC (Playback Control), a menu with recorded contents may appear on the TV if you have turned the PBC on. You can make your selection according to its PBC menu. Press the PBC button on the remote control to turn PBC on or off anytime during Video CD playback. When switching from

PBC off to PBC on mode, playback will start from the beginning of the disc. To turn on the menu display again, press the RETURN button.

To remove the disc

Press OPEN/CLOSE.

Remove the disc after the disc tray opens completely.

Be sure to press the OPEN/CLOSE button to close the disc tray after you remove the disc.

To turn the power off

Press ON/STANDBY on the front panel or POWER button on the remote control to turn the unit off.

Automatic Power Off function

If the DVD player is stopped, or the screen saver is engaged for approximately 20 minutes, the DVD player will automatically turn itself off.

Notes

• Do not move the DVD player during playback. Doing so may damage the disc.

• Use the OPEN/CLOSE button to open and close the disc tray.

Do not push the disc tray while it is moving. Doing so may cause the DVD player to malfunction.

• Do not push up on the disc tray or put any objects other than discs on the disc tray. Doing so may cause the DVD player to malfunction.

• In many instances, a menu screen will appear after playback of a movie is completed. Prolonged display of an on-screen menu may damage your television set, permanently etching that image onto its screen. To avoid this, be sure to press the STOP button on your remote control once the movie is completed.

• The DVD player mutes sound and subtitles during reverse and forward scan of DVDs.

• The playback speed may differ depending on the disc.

Playing frame by frame

Press PAUSE/STEP during still playback.

Each time you press the PAUSE/STEP button, the picture advances one frame.

Playing in slow-motion

Press SLOW during playback.

Each time you press the SLOW button, the slow-motion speed changes in the following sequence:

Resuming playback from the same location

1 Press STOP at the location where you want to interrupt playback.

The DVD player memor izes the location where playback is stopped.

Notes

• There may be a difference in the location where playback resumes depending on the disc.

• Settings you changed using the on-screen displays while the DVD player keeps a location in the memory may function only after the memory is cleared.

• Resuming playback does not work for VCD with PBC on.

2 Press PLAY.

The DVD player resumes playback from the location where you stopped playback.

To start playback from the beginning regardless of the location where you stopped playback.

1 Press STOP twice.

2 Press PLAY.

The DVD player deletes the memory of the location.

Playback starts from the beginning of the current title.

Playback starts from the beginning of the disc.

• If you want to return to the beginning of a DVD, open and close the disc tray once with the OPEN/CLOSE button before pressing the

PLAY button.

Playback starts from the beginning of the current track.

Locating a Desired Section

Normally, DVDs are divided into titles, and the titles are sub-divided into chapters. VIDEO CDs and audio CDs are divided into tracks. You can quickly locate any specific title, chapter, or track.

Locating a title using the top menu

1 Press TOP MENU.

The top menu appears on the TV screen.

e.g.

3 Press ENTER.

Playback starts from chapter 1 of the selected title.

2 Press / / / to select the title you want.

If the titles in the top menu are assigned a number, you can directly locate a specific title by pressing its designated number with the number buttons.

Notes

• The instructions above describe basic procedures which may vary depending on the contents of the DVD. If different instructions appear on the TV screen, follow those instructions.

• If you display the top menu during playback and press the TOP

MENU button again without selecting any title, the DVD player may resume playback from the point where you first pressed the TOP MENU button (depending on the actual DVD.)

• This method of locating a title is available only on a disc that contains a top menu.

• Instruction notes of discs may refer to the button that displays the top menu as TITLE button.

Locating a specific chapter or track

Press SKIP or repeatedly to access the chapter or track number you want.

Playback starts from the selected chapter or track.

To locate succeeding chapters or tracks.

Playback starts from the beginning of the current chapter or track.

When you press twice in quick successions, playback starts from the beginning of the preceding chapter or track.

Note

Some titles may not display chapter numbers.

You can magnify areas within a picture.

If the scene was recorded from multiple angles, you can easily change the camera angle of the scene you are watching.

• Filter (Audio/Photo/Video): Sets file filters.

Filter is not applicable to Audio CD.

• Repeat (Off/Track/All):

Off: Resumes normal playback.

Track: Repeats the current track/file.

All: Repeats all files on the current folder or all tracks on the disc.

• Mode (Normal/Shuffle/Music Intro):

Normal: Resumes normal playback.

Shuffle: Playbacks track/file in random order.

Music Intro: Only playbacks the first 10 seconds of all the files on the current folder or all tracks on the disc.

• Edit mode: Memory operation works only when Edit mode is selected. After finish storing the files/tracks you want into the Program view list, select “Edit mode” again and press

ENTER to release edit mode.

• Program view: To view tracks/files in the Program view list.

It is disabled when the Program view list is empty.

• Add to program: Add files/tracks to the Program view list. It is disabled if the Edit mode is not selected. (The maximum number of files/tracks can be added is 30.)

• Browser view: To view files/tracks in the original view list.

• Clear program: Delete the files/tracks in the Program view list. Select a file/track or more you want to delete in stop mode. “ “ will appear besides the deleted file/track. Select

Clear program and then press ENTER. It is disabled if the

Edit mode is not selected.

This DVD player requires discs/recordings to meet certain technical standards in order to achieve optimal playback quality. Prerecorded DVDs are automatically set to these standards. There are many different types of recordable disc formats (including

CD-R containing MP3 files). Because this area of technology is still evolving, Toshiba cannot guarantee that all recordable discs will produce optimal playback quality. The technical criteria set forth in this owner’s manual are meant only as a guide.

Viewing JPEG Files

You can play JPEG files that have been recorded on a CD-R or CD-RW on the DVD player. You can select a preferred view: a page of 9 thumbnail images or a single image view. Also, rotating, enlarging and shifting of each image can be possible.

• Make your TV shape conform to the 4:3 picture size. Only 4:3 pictures can be played regardless of the function settings via the on-screen displays of the DVD player. If the TV is adjusted to other sizes, e.g. “16:9”, images will appear to be horizontally expanded. For details, refer to the owner’s manual of your TV.

You can connect the USB flash drives (not included) to the USB jack on the front of DVD player.

You can play the files in MP3, DivX ® or JPEG format stored on a USB flash drive by connecting it to this player.

DVDs equipped with the password function are rated according to their content. The contents allowed by a parental lock level and the way a DVD can be controlled may vary from disc to disc.

For example, if the disc allowed, you could edit out violent scenes unsuitable for children and replace them with more suitable scenes, or you could lock out playback of the disc altogether.

• DVDs may or may not respond to the parental lock settings. This is not a defect in the DVD player. Make sure this function works with your DVDs.

Press ENTER again to list the parental level.

The parental lock level is equivalent to the following ratings:

Level 1: Kid Safe

Level 2: G

Level 3: PG

Level 4: PG-13

Level 5: PG-R

Level 6: R

Level 7: NC-17

Level 8: Adult

5) Press / to select the rating from 1 to 8. Rating one

(1) has the most restrictions while rating eight (8) can virtually playback all DVD software.

6) Press OPEN/CLOSE button to activate the Parental

Level setting.

If the DVD has been designed to temporarily cancel the

Parental Level, the screen will change depending on which disc is played. If you select “YES” with the ENTER button, “Enter Password” screen will appear. Input the 4digit password as you have set then followed by ENTER button and playback will start. If “NO” is selected, press the OPEN/CLOSE to remove the disc.

Notes

• If you input a wrong password, press CLEAR button and re-enter your 4-digit password again.

• You cannot play DVDs rated higher than the level you selected unless you cancel the parental lock function.

Before Calling Service Personnel

Check the following guide for the possible cause of a problem before contacting service.

Symptoms and correction

Symptom

No power.

The DVD player turned off by itself.

No picture or abnormal colour

(pinkish, greenish, etc.).

No sound.

The playback picture has occasional distortion.

Brightness is unstable or noises are present in the playback pictures.

The DVD player does not start playback.

Playback does not follow the course of the disc’s program.

Buttons do not work.

The remote control does not work properly.

Cause

• The power plug is disconnected.

• The video/HDMI cable is not connected securely.

• Mismatch setting between TV and this unit.

• Wrong connection.

• The equipment connected with the audio cable is not set to receive DVD signal output.

Correction

• Connect the power plug securely into the wall outlet.

• Press the PLAY button.

• The automatic power off function turned the unit off.

• The TV is not set to receive DVD signal output.

• The audio cable is not connected securely.

• The audio receiver or TV is turned off.

• Select the appropriate video input mode on the TV so the picture from the DVD player appears on the TV screen.

• Connect the video/HDMI cable securely into the appropriate jacks.

• Select the correct Video Out setting.

• Check the connection.

• Select the correct input mode of the audio receiver so you can listen to the sound from the DVD player.

• Connect the audio cable securely into the appropriate jacks.

• Turn on the equipment connected with the audio cable.

• Select the proper audio setting.

• The setting of output sound format is incorrect.

• The disc is dirty.

• It is in fast forward or fast reverse playback.

• The effect of copy protection.

• No disc is inserted.

• An unplayable disc is inserted.

• The disc is placed upside down.

• The disc is not placed within the guide.

• The disc is dirty.

• The parental lock function is set.

• It is in the mode of repeat playback, memory playback, etc.

• Power supply fluctuations or other abnormalities such as static electricity may interrupt correct operations.

• The remote control is not pointed at the remote sensor of the DVD player.

• The remote control is too far from the DVD player.

• The batteries in the remote control are exhausted.

• Remove the disc and clean it.

• Sometimes a small amount of picture distortion may appear. This is not a malfunction.

• Connect the DVD player directly to the TV.

Avoid connecting the DVD player to a VCR or

TV/VCR combination.

• Insert a disc.

• Insert a playable disc. (Check the disc type and colour system.)

• Place the disc with the playback side down.

• Place the disc correctly inside the guide on the disc tray.

• Clean the disc.

• Cancel the parental lock function or change the parental lock level.

• These operations may prevent a proper progress of the contents.

• Press and hold the ON/STANDBY button on the front panel for more than about 3 seconds. The DVD player turns off. Press the button again to turn it on. If the buttons still do not work, disconnect the power plug and insert it into the wall outlet again.

• Point the remote control at the remote sensor of the DVD player.

• Operate the remote control within about 7 m.

• Replace the batteries with new ones.
