DESIGN
3.1 FRAME - GENERAL
3.1.1 Substructure
James Hardie external cladding products are installed to dry kilned timber, light gauge steel stud-frames or to timber battens or steel top hats. Table 5 indicates the construction method required based on the substructure used.
TABLE 5: CONSTRUCTION METHOD BASED ON SUBSTRUCTURE
SUBSTRUCTURE CONSTRUCTION METHOD
3.3 FRAME - TOP HAT CONSTRUCTION
3.3.1 Top Hat Layout
Top hats need to be installed vertically. It is the responsibility of the project engineer to determine the appropriate wind pressures for the project and specify the fixing of the top hats to the structure. The engineer must limit the deflection of the supporting structure to span/200 for Serviceability wind Load.
For maximum top hat spacing that can be achieved with the James Hardie external cladding products please refer to Table 7. These spacing values are based on Ultimate Limit State wind pressures.

* A qualified structural engineer must assess and certify the substructure and the connection between the substructure and the top hats accordingly.
3.1.2 Tolerances
Ensure that the frame and top hats/battens are square and work from a central datum line. Framing must be straight and true and provide a flush face to receive the sheeting.
A suggested maximum tolerance of between 3mm and 4mm in any 3m length of frame will give best results.

3.3.2 Achieving a Floor to Ceiling Height of 3m for 2.1 -2.9kPa
For steel subframe and top-hat construction, the James Hardie
Intermediate Top Hats may cantilever by 200mm top and bottom. The subframe may therefore be designed and fixed into the superstructure, refer to Figure 6.
3.4 CONCRETE
When fixing to concrete, all James Hardie™ products need to be installed on James Hardie Intermediate Top Hats or suitable treated timber battens over HardieWrap
TM
weather barrier. To temporarily fix HardieWrap
TM weather barrier over concrete it is recommended to use 3M
TM
adhesive transfer tape 9472. For top hat span and fixing details see Table 7.
There are many different types of concrete and variance in the compressibility strengths. The details provided in Table 7 for James
Hardie Intermediate Top Hats fixed to a concrete substrate assume a minimum concrete strength of 25MPa. Fixing details are based on the
Hilti DX-Kwik fastener system used with the X-CR_P8 44mm nail when fixing James Hardie Intermediate Top Hats to solid concrete of 25MPa or greater. Alternate fixing designs outside this scope requires 3rd party engineering design and certification.
Do not bridge structural movement joints. These must be carried through to the external cladding. A control joint will need to be created in the James Hardie external cladding and James Hardie
Intermediate Top Hats.
For warranty and fixing details or further information on concrete anchoring please contact: n
Hilti Australia – 131 292
3.5 ADDDITIONAL DESIGN CONSIDERATIONS
3.5.1 Ground Clearance
Install James Hardie external cladding with a minimum 30mm clearance to the balcony deck. Maintain a slope away from the building in accordance with the local building codes, typically a minimum 50mm slope over the first metre. Maintain a minimum 50mm clearance to paths, steps and driveways.
3.2.2 Timber Frame
Use of timber frame must be in accordance with AS1684 – ‘Residential timber-framed construction’ and the framing manufacturers specifications.
Use only seasoned timber. ‘Timber used for house construction must have the level of durability appropriate for the relevant climate and expected service life and conditions including exposure to insect attacks or to moisture, which could cause decay.’ Reference AS1684.2
Do not install external cladding such that it may remain in contact with standing water.
3.2.3 Steel Frame
Use of steel framing must be in accordance with NASH standard for residential and Low-Rise Steel Framing Part 1: Design Criteria and the framing manufacturer’s specifications. Framing members must have a base metal thickness (BMT) between 0.55 to 1.6mm. The steel must have the appropriate level of durability required to prevent corrosion.
3.2.3.1 Thermal Break
For steel frames, the Building Code of Australia sections J1.5 and
3.12.1 volumes 1 and 2 respectively, state for both residential and commercial buildings a thermal break with an R value of 0.2m2 K/W must be installed behind external cladding where the cladding and internal lining make direct contact with the same steel frame. James
Hardie ® recommends the HardieBreak TM thermal strip. Refer to the
HardieBreak
TM
thermal strip installation guide for more information.
NOTE: HardieBreak
TM
thermal strip is not required on blade wall construction.
3.5.2 HardieWrap™ Weather Barrier
HardieWrap™ weather barrier must be installed under James Hardie™ external cladding in accordance with the AS/NZS 4200.2 ‘Pliable building membranes and underlays – Installation’ and HardieWrap™ Technical
Data Sheet.
HardieWrap™ weather barrier delivers a tripleshield of protection to help against external weather penetration, internal condensation build-up and external heat penetration. Additionally, it enhances the wall thermal performance, please refer to www.jameshardie.com.au or www.accel.
com.au for more information.
If using an alternate product in lieu of HardieWrap™ weather barrier, the designer must ensure that the product is fit for purpose and it has the following properties in accordance with AS/NZS 4200.1: n
Vapour barrier - low or mediumn n
Water barrier - high

To achieve the acoustic values presented in this design guide, use either fibreglass or polyester insulation. The minimum thickness and density should be 50mm and 14kg/m3 respectfully with insulation. The insulation should be an acoustic grade fibreglass or polyester, unless otherwise stated and satisfy the BCA and AS/NZS 4859.1. The acoustic values represented in Table 9 are predictions produced by INSUL software. Comparisons with test data show that it is generally within 3 STC points for most constructions.
3.11 THERMAL EFFICIENCY
The total R-value depends on installation and environmental conditions. Figures 3 and 4 provide total R-values for common systems in accordance with AS4859.1:2006 Materials for Thermal Insulation of Buildings. Note that the R-value will be reduced in cavities that are ventilated. For more information on R-values please refer to James Hardie R-value supplement.
