TecIdentify 1.7 - User Guide: How to check MAPP codes
1 Introduction
Product piracy damages brand image and causes lost sales. Counterfeit products are also a security risk for the end user.
In cooperation with the European association of automotive suppliers (CLEPA) TecIdentify was developed – it is the first
IT-based standard solution for the automotive branch to check whether parts are genuine.
The principle behind is as follows: Each product is labelled with an identification number, unique in the world, in the form of a MAPP code (data matrix code). It is easy to check this code on the TecIdentify platform with a scanner, mobile phone camera or via manual entry. With TecIdentify each article can be uniquely identified and verified within seconds – worldwide, 24 hours a day.
1.1 The MAPP code
The MAPP code is a standard for the independent automotive aftermarket that has been recommended by the European association of automotive suppliers. It is based on GS1 and ISO standards.
Note: MAPP stands for Manufacturers against product piracy. For more details about this initiative see www.mappcode.com
The MAPP code is a two-dimensional data matrix code. A 2D code does not consist of lines like a one-dimensional code but of groups of squares or lines on a rectangular or square surface. Because of the second dimension 2D codes can encode substantially more information in the smallest space. In addition, errors reading MAPP codes are practically excluded. The code is readable even if it has been partially damaged.

Just like a fingerprint can be assigned to just one person, a MAPP code can be assigned to exactly one product or package.
With this unique product identification, a new tool is now available to fight against product counterfeiting; it can be used by all market participants.

1.2 How TecIdentify works
TecIdentify is an authentication platform-based solution to check the genuineness of automotive replacement parts marked with the MAPP code.
Using this solution anyone who wants to authenticate an article (i.e. customs, garage, wholesaler, manufacturer or end customer) has a simple way to check that a product is genuine – anywhere in the world, around the clock, seven days a week. By using a PC and its keyboard or a 2D scanner or a mobile phone with camera, the MAPP code can be read in and sent off to the authentication platform. At the platform the code is checked and the result (in form of a text message combined with a green/yellow/red traffic light) is sent back right away.
Pictures: Check via mobile phone with TecIdentify app or NeoReader app Check via scanner via www.TecIdentify.com or manufacturer website
This way a user can be sure he has part with a correct code. If the result is not positive he can send a problem report to the manufacturer immediately.
The security does not lie in the code but in the checking process that TecIdentify carries out. Intelligent algorithms are executed to check the code.

2.3 Step: Manually enter or scan of the MAPP code(s)
There are two different ways to enter a MAPP code on the TecIdentify webpage:
1. Manual entry via keyboard: Left-click in the query field and enter the MAPP code without spaces or breaks. Please note that the brackets must also be typed and that the query is case sensitive. If you want to check several codes at once you have to enter each code in a separate line.
2. Input via scanner: You can also authenticate MAPP codes with any scanner that is able to read Data Matrix codes.
Plug in the scanner to your PC and scan the code. The MAPP code is then entered automatically in the query field.
Note: The scanner must be set up so that it can read GS1 barcodes. If you have questions about the settings of your scanner please contact the scanner manufacturer.
3. Enter the security code (only for unregistered users) shown below the query field.
4. Click the Check MAPP codes button.
Note: If you want to avoid the input of the security code you have to
Login to TecIdentify
. To be able to do so you have to

TecIdentify 1.7 - User Guide: How to check MAPP codes
The meaning behind the colours in the answer messages is as follows:
Green = The MAPP code has been recognised and there should be no problem.
Yellow = The MAPP code is known but has been checked many times already. If you doubt that the part is original, contact your dealer or the manufacturer.
Red = The code is not known. Contact your dealer or the manufacturer. (The wrong format can also cause the red signal. In this fist case check your scanner settings.)
Note: The manufacturer can define the texts of the answer message in any language. The displayed language depends on your browser settings. If no message text in your language is defined the English text is displayed.
2.6 Step: Inform the manufacturer(s) about problematic products
If one or a couple of MAPP codes you scanned have been identified as problematic or unknown (yellow or red traffic light) you are asked to inform the manufacturer
.
Please do this and h elp us to prevent product piracy!
1. Click the Report a problem button on the Scan Result page.
2. The Report a Problem page opens.

Note: The manufacturer can define the texts of the answer message in any language (the displayed language depends on your mobile phone settings). If no message text in your language is defined the English text is displayed.
Codes which cannot be checked via mobile phone
Thus MAPP codes are verifiable via TecIdentify or NeoReader app, they must have a certain structure. If this is not the case instead of the authentication result delivered from TecIdentify platform Wikipedia is displayed. In cases like this you have to go to www.tecidentify.com to check the code via manual input in the human readable format or scan it with a scanner.
3.6 Step : Inform the manufacturer(s) about problematic products
If one or a couple of MAPP codes you scanned have been identified as problematic or unknown (yellow or red traffic light) you are asked to inform the manufacturer. Please do this and help us to prevent product piracy!
1. Click the Report a problem button on the Scan Result page displayed on your mobile phone.
2. The first part of the Report a Problem page opens.
3. Enter your contact data and click the Continue > button.
4. Now the second part of the Report a Problem page opens – here you can provide Additional product details.
5. Click the Send button.
6. The confirmation page Thank you for reporting the problem! appears. An email containing the information you provided was sent the manufacturer who will take further steps.
7. If you click the
<Back
button on the browser page you can go back to the display of the authentication result.
8. By clicking the Done/Back > button in the mobile phone menu bar at the bottom you can proceed with the next
