Enable personal firewall
Install anti-virus software
Kaspersky – CUHK staff and students can get a copy for free
Keep virus/spyware signatures updated
Keep windows and other software patches updated

Be Alert to Email Attachment or URL You Received
!
Viruses, Trojans and worms can be transmitted through email links or
attachments.
!
Verify the sender's identity and scan every file with an anti-virus program
(e.g. Kaspersky) before opening.

Secure Transmission of Data via CUHK
Wi-Fi Service
•
Data is transmitted in an unencrypted plain
text mode.
•
Thus, the data would easily be hacked by
other Wi-Fi users.
•
CUHK Wi-Fi service encrypts data only when
verifying your identity at the login page.
•
Run a VPN connection over the Wi-Fi
network additionally when processing
sensitive data such as ebanking!

Never Upload or Download Copyright Works
1. Student A downloaded a copyright music
using a P2P software.
2. IFPI (Hong Kong Group) sent a warning letter
to ITSC. The letter had mentioned
• the IP Address of Student A’s computer
• Downloaded time
3. ITSC traced the log and identified that the IP
address was owned by Student A during that
period.
