We hope you will enjoy weaving on it for years to come. The Spring II is a floor loom with a countermarch system. It is available in 90 or 110 cm weaving widths, with either 8 or 12 shafts. The 8 shaft version is expandable to 12 with a 4 shaft extension set. The Spring has been redesigned in 2020 and this version is more robust, heavier, with a new standing beater and an improved brake system. The unique parallel countermarch system developed by Louët guarantees light treadling and a large shed with equal tension on all warp threads. The floating breast beam ensures that the tension on the warp remains the same, every time you advance your warp. Tying the treadle is easy with the pre-cut tie-up cords. The warp beam can be folded inward; in the folded position the depth of the loom is 28 7/8 “. The breast and cloth beams and the reed can be easily removed allowing easy access to the heddles during the threading of the warp. In the online helpdesk (see link) you will find an instruction for setting up the warp (search for ‘set up warp’). IMPORTANT INTRODUCTIE • Nederlands The loom is partially pre-assembled and all cords are adjusted to the right length. Follow the manual carefully and do not change the settings of the height of the lamms and shafts. Read the user instructions for the countermarche for the correct tie-up. This manual guides you step-by-step through the final assembly. In the second section you will find usage tips and an overview of the available extra accessories and spareparts. Screw holes are pre-drilled in the wood. Use the Pz2-screwdriver provided. The screw cuts a thread into the wood. If you need to remove a screw and later replace it, make sure you use the existing thread in the wood. The best way to do that is to insert the screw and turn it in the opposite the direction, un-screwing, until you feel it fall into the original groove. Then replace and tighten the screw again. A bolt has no point. Always use the first hole beyond the cut-off. If you cut extra cords, you should singe the ends to prevent fraying. You can do this with a soldering iron or by a flame (lighter, match or candle) TEXSOLV KOORD Het Texsolv koord is op maat voorgesneden. 1. LOUET’S PARALLEL COUNTERMARCH SYSTEM • LOUET PARALLELLE CONTRAMARS Jan Louët developed the unique parallel countermarch system for Louët’s first countermarche loom ‘Hollandia’ in the 1980s. With the Spring II, the system has been slightly modified. By making the shafts wider there is more space for the heddles. The advantage of countermarch is that when opening the shed, the selected warp threads are pulled upwards and at the same time the remaining warp threads are pulled downwards. This creates a large shed with equal tension on all warp ends. In the traditional countermarch, this was achieved by a large structure on top of the loom. Louët’s parallel countermarch has the advantage of being much more compact and stable. The shafts and lamms all move up and down in perfect horizontal position. In the countermarch, a treadle is tied to two sets of lamms. The lamms and the shafts are attached to the cords of the parallel countermarch. Each shaft has two lamms: the upper lamm pulls a shaft downwards. The lower lamm pulls a shaft upwards. The drawing shows a representation of the upwards movement of a shaft when pressing a treadle connected to the lower lamm of a shaft. (More information: see treadle tie up countermarch) 58 • English 2. INSTELLING VAN DE SCHACHT- EN SCHEMELHOOGTES IMPORTANT: a new loom comes correctly setup, we strongly encourage you not to change shaft and lamm positions without first consulting our helpdesk. With the Spring II, the shafts and lamms are sloping slightly upwards from front to back. Depending on 8 or 12 shafts, the difference in height of front and rear shaft and lamms 5/16” or 6/16” (8 or 10 mm) . This is set up to bring all warp ends to the same height in your shed . The exact height of the shafts is determined by the place where the warp end goes through the eye of the heddle. With the shafts locked by the blocking pin, the warp end runs through the middle of the eye of the heddle at shaft 1, and near the top of the heddle eye at shaft 12 . Only in exceptional circumstances will the heights have to be adjusted again. Please contact support by e-mail (see page 2) before adjusting shaft and lamm heights. In the event that an adjustment needs to be made, you only do so while there is a warp on the loom, and your cloth has been advanced past the breast beam and the treadles are tied-up Spring II – V3 – EN/NL BELANGRIJK: Bij een nieuw getouw is de alles perfect afgesteld. 2. ADJUST BEATER SETTINGS The fine adjustment of the height of the beater is best done when there is a warp on the loom and you have woven approx 10” so that the apron bar has passed the breast beam. Make sure the treadle tie up is correctly done (see instructions for treadle tie up) and the warp tension is set properly (see instructions floating breast beam). The most important adjustment is that the hinge hooks are adjusted to the same height left and right . When pressing the treadle the lower half of the shed should JUST touch the lower beater bar on both sides 7A. If the beater is askew, this can lead to selvedge problems. Correct the height by first unscrewing the locking nut of the hinge hooks and then turning the hinge hooks in or out; The reed is lowered by turning the hinge hooks clockwise. The reed rises higher by turning the hinge hooks counterclockwise. 7B Use the adjustment jig to determine the correct height of the reed stand. When the beater height is good, tighten the lock nut firmly again. Make sure the hooks point outward, perpendicular to the side support. If the beater does not bump into both buffers, first check that the hinge hooks are perpendicular to the side. Occasionally it is necessary to create a little more space between the wood of the upright and the lower beater bar on the side where the beater 7B 7C Spring II – V3 – EN/NL 7A 7. LEASE STICKS DURING WEAVING The function of the lease sticks is to keep the warp threads arranged when setting up the warp. Once the weaving can start, the lease sticks no longer have a function. It is advisable to remove them. In any case, they should not be between the heddles and the back beam, because this can cause adverse effects on the shed. If you still want to leave them in the warp, connect the lease sticks to the eyelet in the back beam support, so that they are behind the back beam. 8. The floating breast beam is a system patented by Louet to ensure equal warp tension each time you advance your warp. You can increase the tension on the warp by placing the cords a number of holes further on the screws. Make sure that left and right sides are always c of the cordonnected with at the same number of holes from the end. If you find it difficult to get the warp tension right when tying the warp to the apron bar, you can temporarily block the movement of the floating breast beam by disconnecting the spring cord from the arm. The two short cords that connect the floating arm to the front post ensure that the breast beam remains fixed. After tying the warp, reconnect the spring cords and adjust the tension so that the uprights of the floating breast beam are vertical. Each time after advancing the cloth, you make sure that the arms of the floating breast beam are vertical. A video on this process can be found on our online helpdesk (see the link on page 2) • Nederlands 9. BLOCK UNUSED SHAFTS – SINKING SHAFTS Prevent the shafts that you do not use for the weaving project from sinking down by securing them with shaft blocking pin. It is important that these shafts are not connected to any treadles. Sometimes it also happens that the shafts that are in use tend to sink down when there is no activity. This is happens more often if there are few shafts and/or few treadles in use or if there is a low tension on the warp. Actually, this is not a problem, because as soon as you push a treadle, the shafts are forced into the correct position. Tying up unused treadles to the lower lamms can reduce this issue. The extra weight help to keep to hold the shafts at a higher resting position. 10. BLOKKEER ONGEBRUIKTE SCHACHTEN – ZAKKENDE SCHACHTEN • English 11. 11. DOEK OPBOMEN TIJDENS HET WEVEN The ratchet of the cloth beam has two pawls that engage the ratchet. The lower large pal ensures that the cloth beam does not roll back. The front pal has a function in advancing the cloth and tensioning the warp. When advancing the warp, you first lift the brake lever connected to the warp beam slightly and then lift the cloth advance lever several times until the arms of the floating breast beam are vertical again. 10. BLOCK UNUSED SHAFTS • 11. ADVANCING THE CLOTH DURING WEAVING • Nederlands • English 67 • English • Nederlands • English • Nederlands The back beam section can be folded. To do this, unscrew the two screw eyes that are at the bottom of the back beam supports. Fold the back beam section against the main uprights If there is a warp on the loom, you can advance the warp beam until tension on the warp keeps the back beam against the main upright. If there is no warp on the loom you can use a cord to tie the back beam section to the main upright. 12. 13. MAINTENANCE The Spring does not require any special maintenance. However, we recommend checking that all screws are still tight after the first few months. This is particularly important when the loom is in a dry environment. Check this every year. 13. Spring II – V3 – EN/NL 12. FOLDING THE BACK BEAM SECTION • INKLAPPEN ACHTERZIJDE • 13.
