Assembling and preparing your mobile phone

Get started by assembling and setting up your mobile phone for its first use.

Install the SIM card and battery

1. Remove the back cover and insert the SIM card.

Charge the battery

1. Plug the small end of the supplied travel adapter into the multifunction jack.

2. Plug the large end of the travel adapter into a power outlet.

3. When charging is finished, unplug the travel adapter.

Do not remove the battery while connected to the travel adapter. Doing this may cause damage to the device.

Insert a memory card (optional)

Your phone accepts microSD™ or microSDHC™ memory cards up to 8 GB (depending on memory card manufacturer and type).

Formatting the memory card on a PC may cause incompatibility with your phone. Format the memory card only on the phone.

Frequent writing and erasing will shorten the lifespan of memory cards.

1. Remove the back cover.

2. Insert a memory card with the gold-coloured contacts facing down.

3. Replace the back cover.

Using basic functions

Learn how to perform basic operations and use the main features of your mobile phone.

Turn your phone on or off

To turn your phone on,

1. Press and hold [ ].

2. Enter your PIN and press < OK> (if necessary).

To turn your phone off, repeat step 1 above.

Access menus

To access your phone's menus,

1. In Idle mode, press < mode.

You may need to press the Confirm key to access

Menu mode depending on your region or service provider.

2. Use the Navigation key to scroll to a menu or option.

When you access a menu requiring the PIN2, you must enter the PIN2 supplied with the SIM card. For details, contact your service provider.

Use the icons on the toolbar to access popular menus.

To access a menu

1. In Idle mode, scroll left or right to select a menu.

1. In Menu mode, select Settings → Profiles.

2. Scroll to a user profile and press <

To use the speakerphone feature

2. To switch back to the earpiece, press the

In noisy environments, you may have difficulty hearing the calls while using the speakerphone feature. For better audio performance, use the normal phone mode.

By plugging the supplied headset into the multifunction jack, you can make and answer calls:

• To redial the last call, press and hold the headset button.

To answer a call, press the headset button.

Send and view messages

To send a text or multimedia message

2. When the word displays correctly, press [ 0] to insert a space. If the correct word does not display, press the Navigation key up or down to select an alternate word.

ABC mode

Press an appropriate alphanumeric key until the character you want appears on the display.

Number mode

Press an appropriate alphanumeric key to enter a number.

Symbol mode

Press an appropriate alphanumeric key to enter a symbol.

Add and find contacts

The memory location to save new contacts may be preset depending on your service provider.

To change the memory location, in Menu mode, select Contacts → Management → Save new

contact to → a memory location.

To add a new contact

1. In Idle mode, enter a phone number and press

< Options> → Create contact.

2. Select a memory location (if necessary).

3. Select a number type (if necessary).

4. Enter contact information.

5. Press the Confirm key to add the contact to memory.

To find a contact

1. In Menu mode, select

list.

Contacts → Contact

2. Enter the first few letters of the name you want to find.

3. Select the contact’s name from the contact list.

Use basic camera functions

To capture photos

1. In Menu mode, select camera.

3. Press the Confirm key to take a photo. The photo is saved automatically.

4. Press < Back> to take another photo (step 2).

To view photos

In Menu mode, select My files → Images → a photo file.

To capture videos

1. In Menu mode, select camera.

3. Aim the lens at the subject and make any adjustments.

4. Press the Confirm key to start recording.

5. Press the Confirm key or < Stop> to stop recording. The video is saved automatically.

Listen to music

To listen to the FM radio

1. Plug the supplied headset into the phone.

2. In Menu mode, select

radio.

Applications → FM

3. Press the Confirm key to start the FM radio.

4. Press < Yes> to start automatic tuning.

The radio scans and saves available stations automatically.

The first time you turn on the FM radio, you will be prompted to start automatic tuning.

5. Control the FM radio using the following keys:

To browse web pages

1. In Menu mode, select Internet → Home to launch your service provider’s homepage.

2. Navigate web pages using the following keys:

Use advanced call functions

To view and dial missed calls

Your phone will display calls you have missed on the display. To dial the number of a missed call,

1. Press < View>.

2. Scroll to the missed call you want to dial.

3. Press [ ] to dial.

To call a recently dialled number

1. In Idle mode, press [ recent numbers.

To hold a call or retrieve a held call

Press < Hold> to place a call on hold or press

< Retrieve> to retrieve a held call.

To dial a second call

If your network supports this function, you can dial another number during a call:

1. Press < Hold> to place the first call on hold.

2. Enter the second number to dial and press

[ ].

3. Press < Swap> to switch between the two calls.

To answer a second call

If your network supports this function, you can answer a second incoming call:

1. Press [ ] to answer the second call.

The first call is automatically placed on hold.

2. Press < Swap> to switch between the calls.

To make a multiparty call (conference call)

1. Call the first party you want to add to the multiparty call.

2. While connected to the first party, call the second party.

The first party is automatically placed on hold.

3. When connected to the second party, press

< Options> → Conference call.

To call an international number

1. In Idle mode, press and hold [ character.

0] to insert the +

2. Enter the complete number you want to dial

(country code, area code, and phone number), and then press [ ] to dial.

To call a contact from the phonebook

1. In Menu mode, select

2. Scroll to the number you want to dial and press

[ ] to dial.

To reject a call

To reject an incoming call, press [ ]. The caller will hear a busy tone.

To reject calls from certain numbers automatically, use the auto rejection. To activate the auto rejection and set up the reject list,

1. In Menu mode, select Settings → Application

→ Call → All calls → Auto reject.

2. Scroll left or right to On (if necessary).

3. Select Reject list.

4. Press < Options> → Create.

5. Enter a number to reject.

6. Select Match criteria → an option

(if necessary).

7. Press < Options> → Save.

8. To add more numbers, repeat steps 4-7 above.

9. Press < Options> → Save.

Use advanced phonebook functions

To create your namecard

1. In Menu mode, select

namecard.

Contacts → My

2. Enter your personal details and press the

Confirm key.

To create a group of contacts

1. In Menu mode, select Contacts → Groups.

2. Press < Options> → Create group.

3. Enter a group name and press the Confirm key.

4. To set a group ringtone, press < Options> →

Group ringtone → the Confirm key.

5. Select a ringtone category → a ringtone.

6. Press < Options> → Save.

To create a text template

1. In Menu mode, select

To copy music files via Samsung PC Studio

2. Using a PC data cable, connect the multifunction jack on your phone to a PC.

3. Run Samsung PC Studio and copy files from the PC to the phone.

Refer to the Samsung PC Studio help for more information.

To transfer data from a PC to your phone, you need Windows XP Service Pack 2.

To copy music files to a memory card

1. Insert a memory card.

2. In Menu mode, select Settings → PC

connections → Mass storage.

3. Using an PC data cable, connect the multifunction jack on your phone to a PC.

When connected, a pop-up window will appear on the PC.

4. Open a folder to view files.

5. Copy files from the PC to the memory card.

To create a playlist

1. In Menu mode, select Music.

2. Press < Options> → Create playlist.

3. Enter a title for your new playlist and press the

Confirm key.

4. Select the new playlist.

5. Press < Add> → Tracks.

6. Select the files you want to include and press

< Add>.

To customise your music player settings

1. In Menu mode, select Music.

2. Press < Options> → Settings.

3. Adjust the settings to customise your music player.

4. Press < Save>.

To record songs from the FM radio

1. In Menu mode, select

radio.

Applications → FM

2. Press the Confirm key to start the FM radio.

3. Select a radio station you want.

4. Press < Options> → Record to start recording.

5. When you are finished recording, press

< Stop>.

To set up your favourite station list

1. In Menu mode, select

radio.

Applications → FM

2. Select a radio station to add to the favourite station list.

3. Press < Options> → Add to Favourites.

4. Select an empty location you want to set.

You can access your favourite stations by pressing the location number on the FM radio screen.

Use the Bluetooth wireless feature

To turn on the Bluetooth wireless feature

1. In Menu mode, select

Bluetooth.

Applications →

2. Press < Options> → Settings.

3. Scroll left or right to On.

4. To allow other devices to locate your phone, scroll down to My phone’s visibility and scroll left or right to Visible.

5. Press < Save>.

To find and pair with other Bluetooth-enabled devices

1. In Menu mode, select

Bluetooth.

Applications →

2. Press < Options> → Search

3. Select a device.

4. Enter a PIN for the Bluetooth wireless feature or the other device’s Bluetooth PIN, if it has one, and press < OK>.

When the owner of the other device enters the same code or accepts the connection, pairing is complete.

You may not need to enter a PIN depending on the device.

To send data using the Bluetooth wireless feature

1. Select the file or item from one of your phone’s applications that you want to send.

2. Press < Options> → Send via or Send

namecard via → Bluetooth (when sending contact data, specify which data to send).

To receive data using the Bluetooth wireless feature

1. Enter the PIN for the Bluetooth wireless feature and press < OK> (if necessary).

2. Press < Yes> to confirm that you are willing to receive data from the device (if necessary).

Activate and send an SOS message

In an emergency, you can send SOS messages to your family or friends for help.

To activate the SOS message

1. In Menu mode, select Messages → Settings

→ SOS messages → Sending options.

2. Scroll left or right to On.

3. Scroll down and press the Confirm key to open the recipient list.

4. Press the Confirm key to open your contact list.

5. Select a contact.

6. Select a number (if necessary).

7. Press < Options> → Save to save the recipients.

8. Scroll down and set the number of times to repeat the SOS message.

9. Press < Save> → <Yes>.

To send an SOS message

1. With the keys locked, press [ ] four times to send an SOS message to preset numbers.

2. To exit SOS mode, press [ ].

Activate the mobile tracker 2.0

When someone inserts a new SIM card in your phone, the mobile tracker feature will automatically send the contact number to specified recipients to help you locate and recover your phone.

To activate the mobile tracker,

1. In Menu mode, select

Mobile tracker 2.0.

Settings → Security →

2. Enter your password and press < OK>.

The first time you access Mobile tracker 2.0, you will be prompted to create and confirm a password.

3. Select Settings.

4. Enter your password and press < OK>.

5. Scroll left or right to On.

6. Scroll down and press the confirm key to open the recipient list.

7. press the Confirm key to open your contact list.

8. Select a contact.

9. Select a number (if necessary).

10. When you are finished selecting contacts, press Confirm key to return to the recipient list.

11. Press the Confirm key to save the recipients.

12. Scroll down and enter the sender's name.

13. Press Confirm key and select < Accept>.

By setting the option in Access remote phone, you can retrieve contacts, delete data on your lost phone, or receive calls to the phone or the phone's location information from the specified phon.

To change the password for the mobil tracker, select Change mobile tracker 2.0 password.

Use the mobile prayer feature

The mobile prayer feature alerts you to prayer time using the specified alarm tone and wallpaper.

You can different alarms for each day.

In Menu mode, select Application → Mobile prayer

Make fake calls

You can simulate an incoming call when you want to get out of meetings or unwanted conversations.

You must activate the hot key to make fake calls;

In Menu mode, select Settings → Application →

Call → Fake call → Fake call hot key.

Press the Navigation key down four times when the keys are locked.

Record and play voice memos

To record a voice memo

1. In Menu mode, select

recorder.

Applications → Voice

2. Press the Confirm key to start recording.

3. Speak your memo into the microphone.

4. When you are finished speaking, press

< Stop>.

To play a voice memo

1. From the voice recorder screen, press

< Options> → Go to My voice clips.

2. Select a file.

View photos and videos on the web

Learn to access photo sharing websites and blogs and view photos and videos.

The feature may be unavailable depending on your region or service provider.

1. In Menu mode, select Communities.

2. Select a website or blog you want to view.

3. Enter your user ID and password of the destination (if necessary)

Use Java-powered games and applications

1. In Menu mode, select

2. Select a game or application from the list and follow the on-screen instructions.

Available games may vary depending on your service provider or region. Game controls and options may vary.

Create a world clock

1. In Menu mode, select

2. Press < Options> → Add.

3. Scroll left or right to a time zone and press

< Add>.

4. To add more world clocks, repeat steps 2-3 above.

Learn to set and control alarms for important events.

To set a new alarm

1. In Menu mode, select Alarms.

2. Select an empty alarm location.

3. Set the details of the alarm.

4. Press < Save>, or press <Options> → <Save>.

To stop an alarm

Set a countdown timer

1. In Menu mode, select Applications → Timer.

2. Press < Set>.

3. Enter the time to count down and press < OK>.

4. Press the Confirm key to begin the countdown.

5. When the timer expires, press < the alert.

OK> to stop

Use the stopwatch

1. In Menu mode, select

Stopwatch.

2. Press < Start> to begin the stopwatch.

3. Press < Record> to record lap times.

4. When you are finished, press < Stop>.

1. In Menu mode, select Organiser → Memo.

2. Press < Create>.

3. Enter your memo text and press the Confirm key.

Manage your calendar

To change the calendar view

1. In Menu mode, select Organiser → Calendar.

2. Press < Options> → View by week or View

by month.

1. In Menu mode, select Organiser → Calendar.

2. Press < Options> → Create → an event type.

3. Enter the details of the event as required.

4. Press < Save>, or press <Options> → <Save>.

To view events

1. In Menu mode, select Organiser → Calendar.

2. Select a date on the calendar.

3. Select an event to view its details.

Use the SIM budgeter

You can keep a record of top-up fees and view call cost statistics each month.

In Menu mode, select Applications → SIM

budgeter.

Your phone is hot to the touch

When you use applications that require more power or use applications on your device for an extended period of time, your device may feel hot if touched. This is normal and should not affect your phone's lifespan or performance.

Your Samsung mobile phone must have sufficient memory and battery power available to operate the camera application. If you receive error messages when launching the camera, try the following:

FM radio

The FM radio application on your Samsung mobile phone uses the headset cable as an antenna. Without a headset connected, the FM radio will be unable to receive radio stations. To use the FM radio, first ensure that the headset is properly connected. Next, scan for and save the available radio stations.

If you still cannot use the FM radio after performing these steps, try accessing your desired station with another radio receiver. If you can hear the station with another receiver, your phone may require service.
